The Dance Hall 13: When You Dance on the Ice and Your Feet Twizzle Twice, That's Amore

Wasn't it right after but everyone knew about it except her? I remember Nathalie Pechalat saying something like that at the time.
IIRC, he told her right after the SD (which they only lost because of Nikita…)

And he was already having tryouts, and everyone was discussing that rumor before worlds.

He said nothing to her, if I recall correctly, until their physical exam at the end of the season. An article came out at Worlds that year, after the SD, saying he would no longer be skating with her and would be skating with Sinitsina. (He and the family are very elegant people, and they wanted to embarrass Lena, to leave the sport.) She, OTOH, was waiting for him to have a conversation with her, but he never did, until some years later. He said to her, as you've read in the paper, I am moving on...etc, etc, that was it. If I am not mistaken, she heard the rumours that he was trying out with Sinitsina, but he had also tried out with others and still hadn't left her. So, I think she was hoping against hope, in a way.

I'm at a loss as to why anyone - let alone someone close to him - would be surprised that Diaz wanted to retire when he was in his 30s, had skated at the senior level for over a decade, and was engaged and likely wanted to start a family.
Part of me wants to think that perhaps she was looking at examples of other male skating partners who continued to skate even after marriage and children (I seem to remember commentators talking about Luca Lanotte having had kids whilst still skating with Cappellini) and that combined with their good results that season may have made her think he might stay in. But really, given how long he'd been competing plus the known engagement to Hubbell she really should have at least suspected retirement might be on the cards. Also think he should have discussed it earlier with her though, like earlier in the season - seems as if he was avoiding the conversation.

Considering the ramifications of her absolutely losing her funding, yes, at the bare minimum, a conversation was needed. The fact that the coaches knew and also said nothing is shameful for them. But this all speaks to the power imbalance that exists. Gabbi's book will be a good read. May it be the bestseller it needs to be.

Finally had time to catch up with CoC RD, and that was such a subpar event. Cup of China lived up to its cursed reputation.
Gutted for Green/Parsons who have two programs I really like, good on Zingas/Kolesnik for making the best out of the opportunity, and I felt like Chock/Bates are far from ready for the season, almost like they focused so much on the FD that they forgot about the RD, it was the slowest and shakiest I've seen them skate in a while. And Smart/Dieck were also shaky; it was their worst skate since their first season together, and every one of their elements was a mess.
I hope everyone will have better skates in the FD, if only for their own confidence.

Agreed 100%. I am so glad I did not stay up to watch it live. How are they less prepared than FB/Ciz? Give Lolo a new RD outfit, and these two could actually win it all. Am I reading too much into this?

FB/C got new music for the RD but the choreography didn't change much, so I doubt it required a big adjustment. And overall, C/B had a much later start to the season compared to FB/C, they did worlds, WTT, and then shows, while FB/C focused on this season since at least January.

Okay. But then why go to WTT and shows, etc, etc... if you're Olympics bound? All those goodies will come after, right? Or did they all underestimate what Guillame and Lawrence could do together?

Maybe he should have brought it up earlier in the season, if he was leaning that way. Or maybe he was still talking it out with Hubbell, and it wasn't just his story to tell until much closer to Worlds. Like it or not, personal relationships are often just as, if not more, important than business relationships.

People often say, "It wasn't what they didn't tell me: it was that they didn't tell me right away" Sometimes that is more hurtful , and sometimes it's a coping mechansim, because the message is not what you want to hear, and two separate hurts are (seemingly) more manageable.

WTT is a requirement for all the top competitors from Worlds unless you have a really good reason like an injury.

I don't think ChoBat had as many shows as in past seasons - they did SOI Japan between Worlds and WTT, came home & had a few weeks before SOI USA, which was a VERY brief tour. They were in Montreal, for the most part, from the 2nd week of June onward.

But they also made it clear in their Mixed Zone comments, when you read between the lines, that they struggled with finding the right pieces of music for their RD. I'm guessing that slowed them down, more than anything, with having a really refined and ready to go RD here. It also makes me think we shouldn't expect much from GilPoir next week (regardless of whatever SB/PB the SCI judges throw at them, lol).

True dat, but they themselves look very sluggish. As other's keep on repeating, finding the music for this tramp of a theme has been very difficult.
The more of these RDs I see, with the same problem being encountered by almost every team is the 120bpm requirement is making then ALL look slow and sluggish. I don't think this is really what the IDTC had in mind when they came up with this stupid idea, but I really would like to line them all up in front of a virtual firing squad and make them answer for this hell they've unleashed upon all of us, especially the skaters, lol.

Don't Chock and Bates start every season where they end up winning the World Championships looking like they spent the whole summer lying on a beach and whipped something together Labour Day Weekend? I don't think the RD they skated today is anything for them to worry about based on the last three years of judging for them. I think the only thing they need to worry about is her FD costume.

I found Chock and Bates a bit slow and in their head a bit, particularly him, but they still scored 84 plus points.
They're fine.
I like the music choice of Kravitz, but I'd take out one music cut for sure.
Luckily it's hard to look at anyone but Madi but he doesn't give me a sexy rocker guy vibe.
I'm really worried about G/P with I'm Too Sexy feeling like a sloppy seconds choice next to R/A who have an excellent program to that music.
But so far none of the top teams have come out of the gate with great performances or programs that haven't needed tweaking in some way or another.

Looking at what I've seen so far, the few teams that understood the assignment are Car/Pom, Zin/Kol, La/La (just mock the theme), and yeah, FB/Ciz (but Lolo needs to stop dancing in her panties). Who am I missing?

I'd love to love La/La but I find the program and concept beneath them and it comes off juniorish.
I agree with the rest of your points save the panties; pure Madonna
