He said nothing to her, if I recall correctly, until their physical exam at the end of the season. An article came out at Worlds that year, after the SD, saying he would no longer be skating with her and would be skating with Sinitsina. (He and the family are very elegant people, and they wanted to embarrass Lena, to leave the sport.) She, OTOH, was waiting for him to have a conversation with her, but he never did, until some years later. He said to her, as you've read in the paper, I am moving on...etc, etc, that was it. If I am not mistaken, she heard the rumours that he was trying out with Sinitsina, but he had also tried out with others and still hadn't left her. So, I think she was hoping against hope, in a way.
I'm at a loss as to why anyone - let alone someone close to him - would be surprised that Diaz wanted to retire when he was in his 30s, had skated at the senior level for over a decade, and was engaged and likely wanted to start a family.
Part of me wants to think that perhaps she was looking at examples of other male skating partners who continued to skate even after marriage and children (I seem to remember commentators talking about Luca Lanotte having had kids whilst still skating with Cappellini) and that combined with their good results that season may have made her think he might stay in. But really, given how long he'd been competing plus the known engagement to Hubbell she really should have at least suspected retirement might be on the cards. Also think he should have discussed it earlier with her though, like earlier in the season - seems as if he was avoiding the conversation.

Considering the ramifications of her absolutely losing her funding, yes, at the bare minimum, a conversation was needed. The fact that the coaches knew and also said nothing is shameful for them. But this all speaks to the power imbalance that exists. Gabbi's book will be a good read. May it be the bestseller it needs to be.
Finally had time to catch up with CoC RD, and that was such a subpar event. Cup of China lived up to its cursed reputation.
Gutted for Green/Parsons who have two programs I really like, good on Zingas/Kolesnik for making the best out of the opportunity, and I felt like Chock/Bates are far from ready for the season, almost like they focused so much on the FD that they forgot about the RD, it was the slowest and shakiest I've seen them skate in a while. And Smart/Dieck were also shaky; it was their worst skate since their first season together, and every one of their elements was a mess.
I hope everyone will have better skates in the FD, if only for their own confidence.
