He said nothing to her, if I recall correctly, until their physical exam at the end of the season. An article came out at Worlds that year, after the SD, saying he would no longer be skating with her and would be skating with Sinitsina. (He and the family are very elegant people, and they wanted to embarrass Lena, to leave the sport.) She, OTOH, was waiting for him to have a conversation with her, but he never did, until some years later. He said to her, as you've read in the paper, I am moving on...etc, etc, that was it. If I am not mistaken, she heard the rumours that he was trying out with Sinitsina, but he had also tried out with others and still hadn't left her. So, I think she was hoping against hope, in a way.
