The 2021 Athletics Thread

I’m disappointed, but the timing for most US athletes sucked. It was May before most were eligible and blocking out 3 non training days during the most intense part of the schedule to account for side effects may not have seemed possible. Of course, the sane ones may have run to get a shot 30 seconds after being named to the team, but not everyone thinks that way.

And if I was his team mate and he caused the whole US team to have to forfeit the games, that's a whole group who gutted it out for the extended year and may not compete in 3 years because of age or other factors, I'd be really pissed

And Michael Andrew, who qualified in three swimming events will not be vaccinated for the Olympics:

I think he's crazy.

Then he must isolate himself, travel alone, and not put in danger the whole US swimming team that might get the 'rona, what a way to jeopardize at this stage of time with 2 weeks to go!

The dutch women's gymnastics is rumored to have cases in the team and they could end up not making it to Tokyo!

The latest is that it might have been a false positive. Retests were negative. I believe they need another round of testing before they are cleared.

This bothers me so much. It's public endangerment. I wish they would treat the vaccine like other vaccines that are required similarly to vaccines kids are required to get to attend school. If you don't want the vaccine you shouldn't be allowed to participate. You don't get vaccinated you homeschool. If you don't vaccinate you don't fly, let alone enter foreign countries and risk infecting other populations. There are a whole list of things you shouldn't be able to do.

I live in Missouri and I'm so pissed at fellow Missourians who refuse to get vaccinated and put people at risk of so much. What happens when people who were vaccinated get sick and need ventilators but don't have access because selfish people refused vaccination and are now sick. Who gets treated? The public menace or the the other guy? It's not fair that these ingrates are being sent to hospitals on St Louis and KC and Columbia taking away their resources for their bullshit. I'm sorry if you don't agree, but the idea of not being able to have access because of these morons is a lot. Especially because the information snd resources are there and they ignore it.

I think this will happen but right now the vaccines are not fully authorized. They are authorized as an Emergency Use authorization only and I don't think you can require people to take something that hasn't been fully approved.

You might be right. But I wish there was a way to expedite. This is an international crisis. I'm for free choice and all the things. But people those choices shouldn't impose upon the public safety of the majority. It's short-sighted and irresponsible AF. And the ones that don't cooperate are the first ones to stand up and tell us about the government and people should be doing for them and what they deserve. I'd leave all if these morons to their own devices and suffer whatever fate comes their way for being so stupid if it didn't mean they might kill off the rest of us.

Don't forget....the gymnastics Olympic Trials were just here in Missouri a couple of weeks ago.. I wanted to go but didn't because I was terrified....the vaccination rates are low across the state, but not bad in St Louis and St Charles counties. Missouri isn't a large state. You can drive across it in 4 hours. Springfield to St Louis is about 3 hours. Distance from Springfield to Kansas City is about 2. That's close enough to wreak havoc on 2 major cities. I was waiting to hear about it being named a super-spreader. Those people were on top of each other and most of them I saw on TV were not wearing masks. My dad went with my wicked stepmother and people weren't wearing them even though they were being passed out.

I agree with the suspension because she knew the rules beforehand. You can still advocate for a change of the rules while understanding that it is still the rule of the moment. The letter explained the position USADA is in and what powers it actually had. That said, the line about it being performance enhancing because it may relax someone and relieve anxiety and depression was truly reaching.

The part in the letter I referenced didn’t explicitly mention lowering heart rate. Anyway, if calming someone down and treating anxiety and depression (serious medical conditions) is now absolutely performance enhancing to the point of unfair advantage then a lot of things need to be banned. Which brings us back to the question over what is determined banned and what’s not banned and why. Or at least why there’s no avenue for a TUE exception for treating anxiety, depression, etc. But like I said before, it doesn’t apply in this particular case since she accepted her punishment since she knew she broke the rules by taking an illegal substance with no exceptions.

The rules for substances that are considered calming are quite strict in golf. Anyone taking beta blockers has to submit a lot of detailed documentation showing that the condition cannot be controlled with other meds. I believe it is the same for anxiety meds.

I don't think Phelps every failed an in competition drug test, but I do remember images of him with a bong that circulated after he had retired.
That photo came to light in 2009, 6 months after the Beijing Games. He was hardly retired at that point, considering he became the most decorated Olympian 3 years later in London.

Who’s ready for Prefontaine Classic Diamond League tonight and tomorrow? 😁

Startlists and results - These lineups are INSANELY good! 🤩

Sifan Hassan is apparently attempting the 5K world record tonight.

Tomorrow’s coverage will be live on NBC at 4:30pm

Also - EVEYONE is talking about the Elaine T-H vs. SAFP vs. Sha’Carri 100m showdown! 🍿

And yep, I guess this means that Sha’Carri is ready.
