The 2021 Athletics Thread

Soooo I don't follow or know anything about Track outside of watching the Olympics. I take it by the sarcastic nature that y'all don't believe her? When I read the article (again I know nothing about Track or drug rules or anything) it seemed legit to me just me reading the one article. So that's not really a thing that can happen and she probably got caught doping? Is that what you are saying? :shuffle:
Agreed. How long would the substance remain in her system if she ingested accidentally through food? Can they re-test her to see if she is still positive? The race has not been run, yet...

Some news from USATF about day 1 of the Olympic Trials:
-There were 3,124 ticketed spectators
-One athlete and one non-participant tested positive for COVID and are currently isolating. Both were fully vaccinated; neither is symptomatic.
Three total, all vaccinated. One athlete, one coach, one official. And another non-vaccinated athlete was in close, sustained contact with one of the individuals. All are now in CDC & Lane County mandated quarantine for 10 days & will miss the Trials. Athletes need to be careful.

Completely shallow opinion while I’m watching Day 2 of the U.S. Olympic Trials: The adidas kits are WAY cooler than the Nike kits. Adidas leopard print > whatever those Nike slashes are supposed to be.

Even New Balance’s kits with the stripes look better than Nike’s.

Watching Round 1 of the men’s 100m. Ato Bolden just said, “There’s a reason why Gatlin has that collection of medals.” YES THERE IS. 🤔

I’m loving Trayvon Bromell. Assuming he does make the team, he’ll be the favorite to win in Tokyo.

WTF did the U of Georgia to Matt Boling’s sprinting? GEESH. He was such a phenom a year ago.

Heads up for anyone watching KGW out of Portland - no tape delay tonight, same with tomorrow. They are broadcasting the swimming trials right now and track & field will be on at 7pm. No re-broadcast scheduled for later either.

GOOD GAWD. I understand how talented Sha’Carri Richardson is, but I REALLY hope that SAFP wins the 100m in Tokyo. Richardson has had a beyond ridiculous attitude here. The interview she gave to Lewis Johnson after the Trials was a bit off. I guess her coach (Dennis Mitchell……yeah, I know 😒) hasn’t bothered to get her any media training.

She did say in the interview that she lost her biological mother in the last week and she wasn't sure if she'd make it to Trials. I'm not sure what her relationship with her bio-mom was but she could have been thrown/emotional due to that and just not been able to pull herself together to be quite fully coherent right after she made the Olympic team.

I liked Sha'Carri Richardson. 🤷‍♀️ I know next to nothing about the track world, but it seems to me like when I do watch the men act like this all the time. And I was touched by her running to her family in excitement and talking about losing her bio mom. That's a lot.

watching the women's steeplechase trials and that's crazy. They bunch up like the speed skaters and if one goes down, they take out the field with them.

Keni Harrison won 100m hurdles and in finally going to the Olympics. Everyone’s blood pressure can drop by half now.

Brianna McNeal ain’t going be able to go to Tokyo, y’all. 💁🏻‍♀️

So, the expectation is she will lose her appeal and the 4th place finisher, Gabbi Cunningham, will get the 3rd spot? I can be okay with that given how close the finish between 3rd and 4th was.

Yes.

That 100m men’s final! 😱 🔥 So happy for Trayvon Bromell! 😃 Baker and Kerley were insanely good too!

Noah Lyles didn’t even make the relay! 😳

How many men make the relay team? I'm rooting for the Oregon guy, Micah Williams, who finished 5th in the final.

According to the USATF rules, anyone who qualifies for any individual event is eligible to be selected for a relay pool. I believe USA Swimming has similar rules.

But traditionally, the top six in the 100/400m are typically picked for the relay pools. But sometimes, 5th & 6th places are iffy.

He can still make the Olympic team in the 200m & if he does he'll probably be selected for the relay. In the very least he'll probably run a heat & the final team will be decided during the games based on form at that time.

Question for you knowledgeable FSUers. Swimmers seem to do everything possible to minimize drag. They shave their body hair, wear super tight head caps, and generally don't have anything extraneous on their body. In contrast, many of the female sprinters seem to have big, uncontained hair, and a lot of them have very long nails. In a sport where events sometimes come down to 1/100th of a second, it seems like they'd want that same sleekness that swimmers seek. Do the hair and nails not affect their aerodynamics? It seems like they would.

They say it doesn’t. I’m at least skeptical that the hair doesn’t affect them. I would have my hair in a ponytail or pulled back into a bun.

US Olympic trials in swimming, gymnastics, & athletics are among the best sporting events held every four (five) year - often more exciting & dramatic than the Olympics themselves.

I don’t think that, as a fan, the competition in swimming and athletics is more exciting to watch than the actual Worlds or Olympics. But many of the American athletes have said that, because the selection at the Trials is so cutthroat (you have to make the team on that day - reputation doesn’t matter) and the talent pool is usually so insanely good, the Trials are usually a much harder competition psychologically that the actual Worlds/Olympics.
