LOL. She's not beating 5 quads and a 3A from Trusova, honey.

I realize it was just a "test skate" - theoretically, all the pressure should be off and skating cleanly shouldn't have been a challenge unless one is coming back from injury (which is why I'm not dismissing Shcher from making the GPF based on this weekend).
But I think Valieva can.
Let's say both Valieva and Trusova are clean with the programs we've seen from test skates.
Valieva will lead over Trusova from the short with about 5 points in spins and PCS (they both landed their 3A's) .
And then the long. Valieva has a perfect constructed long. 3 quads, 7 triples, 1 euler. Trusova has 5 quads, 4 triples, 2A, 1 euler.
The two more quads Trusova has only gives her about 9 more points in BV as she has to take out triples.
Valieva will again take Trusova on spins and PCS with another 5 points, maybe more in long, and that BV advantage Trusova has from two more quads don't mean anything.

That said, it is probably impossible that both goes clean with these demanding programs. But if they do, it is going to be close!!

And then add Shcherbakova to the mix. If she can get those quads back and land her 3 quad program - then it's a 3 horse race. :)

I’m glad that you’ve explained the deal with AK and Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. I had been wondering “Why the hate?” I consider it to be some of the most sublime music on the planet & perfect for an elegant musical skater like Kostornaia. Guess I’m the minority in loving it. What would be the right music for her?

p.s. At least most folks agree that the SP music with the wailing vocal is bad!
Totally agree with you. The SP music was horrible. 4 seasons suited her well I thought...;)

Thoughts on the Test Skates:

1. Usacheva: Not bad for dealing with an injury, hopefully that 3axel and 4sal will show up before RusNats. I love her skating, and I was kind of hoping she'd skate to Swan Lake this year. She skated to it when she was 11 and I was really impressed with her then, and figured she could really bring it justice 4 years later. But alas, Never Enough and Turandot....

2. Sinitsina: I just love her skating. Love her SP. I like the LP, and I'm happy to see her go for 4toe. But she has noticeably marked muscle wasting and looks really sickly to my eyes (I was concerned last year at this time but I figured it was Covid). I wish her health and the season of her dreams. She can't continue after this year starving herself IMO. I know it isn't "nice" to talk about something like that, but someone has to express concern.

3. Khromykh: I'm glad she kept her SP, it fits her and she looks confident and strong with it. The LP is "a'ight". It appears this will be a good year for her, with her 3axel almost ready and she's already doing 4toe-3toe, so if she has 3axel in the SP and LP and 4toe-3toe, 4toe, 4sal in the LP, she could be a dark horse.

4. Nugumanova: Beautiful skater. To me she looks like a very polished, professional skater. But can't jump. So that's how it is with her, but I love to watch skate because she looks to be enjoying herself. As for Ariel for her LP, I'm stunned. WTF? Really?!?!? If she's auditioning for Disney on Ice, I get it. But she's talented enough to do a Russian Nutcracker on Ice and sell it. Oh well, I was at least hoping to enjoy her programs this year, I don't see me watching Ariel again.

5. Samodurova: Never was a fan of her skating. At all. I can't believe she got a GP this season. She shouldn't even place top ten in Russia Juniors! I'm not understanding the very ugly bent-arm Tano in her jumps. It doesn't give her any extra points, and it slows down the rotation on all of her borderline UR/DG jumps. And Mulan? I didn't realize a remake came out last year, and Xtina sang for this soundtrack too. I'm more interested in listening to Xtina than watching that mess again.

6. Kostornaia: Promising. She is the "overall package" for me, with Valieva a close second. I happen to not hate her SP. But I can watch America's Got Talent or whatever and like most types of music/singers if they are good. Beth Hart is really good at doing her type of singing, and Alyona is just as good interpreting it, IMO. I think it's a winner, though not what I had in mind for the Olympics. As for the LP, glad she has her 3axel back, and the program isn't BAD, but she's capable of giving me goosebumps and her skating just looks "lesser" than last year when she won Euros. But I love her skating, and am happy to see her skate this strongly to be honest.

7. Shcherbakova: Coming off an injury, she skated well. I like both of her programs. She's a great dancer, and she has that extra special something that elevates her programs. She looks great, as always. I'm just concerned that if her quads desert her the week of Russian Nationals like they did at Worlds this year, she won't be on the Olympic Team.

8. Tuktamysheva: Well, she's improving a little and I like her programs. Her skating is what it is. Has been that way for six years. I don't see or want her on the Olympic team, but I'm glad she's out there looking and being fierce and enjoying herself. I don't mind her performances now, when before I'd groan and barely get through them.

9. Valieva: I like her SP, it's like Storm, but it's another chance for her to skate something different with maturity. I'm not a fan of Bolero, but I still think she has the X factor, with her jumps, spins, everything. I picked her out four years ago for OGM, and I'm still standing by it.

10. Trusova: What I like about her programs this year is that these programs are ALL SASHA. She's not artistic, and doesn't try to be (It was nice last season with Plush while it lasted), and she just needs to skate HARD and CLEAN. Her idol Nathan doesn't do much choreographically either, she just needs better, stronger, deeper edging and crossovers, and just skate "like a man", like Nathan. All power, no frills. Because if she skates like this at RusNats and Olympics she should win. I'd just like to see her improve her stroking at least, it's improved Alysa Liu's skating drastically. Practice an extra hour at night when you're tired just on stroking everyday until the Olympics. ETA: I was happy that Sasha was made to skate last in her flight. I'm not sure if it was intentional to test her, to see if she can warm up all her Ultra jumps and then wait to the end of the flight to perform. If RusFed did it deliberately for that purpose, well, I'm glad, and it obviously was a success for Sasha.

My early predictions for the Olympic Team: Valieva, Trusova, Shcherbakova. Kostornaia though is neck and neck with Shcherbakova to me and if Anna doesn't have her quads at RusNats, it will take a heck of a lot of Russia/Eteri backroom wheeling and dealing to put her on the team.

My early predictions which mean absolutely nothing: Anna, Kamilla and Sasha go to the Olympics. Kamilla would have gone to Worlds last season except she was too young. That means Tuk, Aliona and Maiia stay home. I will be so, so sorry for Liza, but the numbers are simply not in her favor and there's nothing she can do to make them better except hope one of the three have a total meltdown at Nationals. I'm going to be :wuzrobbed for 3 skaters. If someone has a melt down, for the three left behind. It sucks that there will be far lesser skaters who go, but that's the way it is. Now, as for who medals? Who knows. It could be a Russian sweep. It could be 2/3. It could be 1/3 (I don't think so, but ice is slippery). So, of the three who go, at least one will be very happy and two won't. I'll be :wuzrobbed again. I like the top 6 and Russian nationals, once again, is going to be brutal. And, even though the test skates wasn't an ISU competition, it most certainly was to these 6 women. The race to Beijing has begun.

Agree with everything you say! Especially about Samodurova.
Except - Kostornaia. That wasn't promising at all to me. Well, promising maybe that she landed the 3A in the free, but overall I thought it was a disaster for her standards. I fear that she just doesn't want it anymore...:(

She's maturing and doesn't believe in her abilities. She's really just scared. I feel for her not everyone is as fearless or reckless as Trusova. I only hope she doesn't hurt herself.

I'm sure if the Russian Fed could get away with it, she'd be on the men's team in a heart beat. They have plenty of women. Jumps aside, she wasn't even breathing hard when she came off the ice. She's in better physical shape then every Russian man they have.

And, she doesn't have to do 5 quads. Her 3A is there. I saw the practice clips. A 3A in the SP (which is where they have it now), three quads in the free and she wins. Hands down. No other woman can come close to her potential TES.
She wins the bronze at Beijing in the Men's competition? :) I don't think she can beat Nathan or Yuzu ...

Wow I’m just not seeing the need yet for the doom and gloom on Alyona. Yes I don’t like the short music but she does skate that type of thing well. I love the free music and I think it suits her. I rather suspect she skipped some of the choreography to focus on the jumps as when Eteri was chewing her out it looked like she was saying Alyona skated tense, with her shoulders up by her ears. The only jump that was noticeably short was the last lutz. I rewatched in slo mo and the first lutz, both flips, toe combo, loop, 2axel all looked pretty big. The reply showed the 3A was just less than a quarter so good effort. She’s had not a lot of time still to come back from being really out of it and I would echo Teds comment- huge personal victory

I saw that she said in the interview that she forgot some of the FS choreo

We’re about 100% in agreement, EricWilliam, except for Aleona’s SP music! 😝 If you read through the play-by-play thread from the Test Skates, you’ll see my thoughts on Nugu and Sofia S’s use of Disney cartoon music...Disney must have offered a discount on using their rights!!! Then we got to a third cartoon-music program of the afternoon - Cruella - and the laughs stopped. :) Not sure that Cruella is a Disney cartoon. UPDATE: IT IS! And we had an Aladdin or two in other disciplines.

I might be the minority here but in terms of package, I actually saw the most potential in Scherbakova's and Kostornaia's programmes than anyone else's. Kostornaia is coming back after a terrible season both physically and mentally, so I think we need to give her a break. She needs to peak by Russian Nationals. Everything before that is practice and it could be that she becomes better and better as her confidence comes back. Scherbakova's programmes were at least more interesting than usual though I don't love the music. She's grown on me as a skater in the past two seasons but I can't love her because of her jump technique and because I can't help but see that while Aliona slides, Anna sort of walks on the ice.

Trusova I never really got. I am amazed by her jumping ability and her grit but skating is much more than that so sorry, I can't root for her despite her jaw-dropping jump content.

But the biggest disappointment for me is Valieva. She's grown and improved but that Bolero programme hasn't in terms of interpretation or commitment. It's too Dany G for my style, there are no breathing spaces and it's way too fast and crammed from the get-go. Bolero isn't like that at all. It's about a built-up, but I think they missed the memo or don't care. Come to think of it, the judges probably won't care either if she skates clean-ish. Also, can they please please please change her costume?! She looks hunched. It really doesn't do her any favors.

I can't predict the Russian team and I really don't want to!

Sasha has gone full bad-ass and I’m totally here for it :respec:

Not the Empress’s day but the program suits her and I hope she doesn’t mess with it too much.

Anna getting energy from the crowd as always…I’d love to see an Olympic crowd behind her.

Aliona has made so much progress and I hope she keeps at it, her glide and flow is just beautiful. 3A is back!!

Kamila - I love Bolero but this choreo quite frankly sucks, and I don’t really want this program to win the OGM. She deserves so much better than this.

Trusova as a metal head is exactly what this sport needs to shake things up. Enough with the emo female ballads, skating war horses, bad classical edits and cutesy emoting - shred some quads to a wailing guitar and we're good. :kickass:
pls No Wailing, we have enough of it right now

Big Tonya Harding fan here, so I would like to see Trusova truly embrace her “bad ass bitch” and carve her own unique path. Harding gave us Two Tribes, Batman, People Are Still Having Sex, ZZ Top, Jurassic Park; no one else was skating to that style of music and I lived for it! Not trying to beat a dead horse, but I do wish Trusova would spend more time on improving her skating skills, speed and spins. Harding had those 3 components in spades and they really accentuated the amazing quality of her jumps to really give her a dynamic effect when she hit a clean program.

Yes!!! I have never been a fan of the ladies discipline because there's nothing more boring than pretty princesses with terrible, cheesy music...tinkly piano, Celine Dion, etc. Trusova's FS was the best thing I've ever seen.

The music comes from the live-action movie Cruella, not any of the cartoons of 101 Dalmatians.
Well, Kadryova/Balchenko's Aladdin FS comes from the live-action version (Will Smith voiceover) and Samodurova's Mulan FS comes from the live-action version (new Aguilera music), but it's all still Disney, you know? I mean, goodness, if someone went out and skated a program to the Enchanted soundtrack, we'd all still say "oh, Disney!" and that was a live-action (mostly) film.

I was referring to this comment:
Not sure that Cruella is a Disney cartoon. UPDATE: IT IS!
All still Disney- yes! But you won't find any of the upbeat, children-targeted 101 Dalmatians music in the rather dark (for Disney) live-action movie.

Of course you'd say something was Disney when it was Disney ;)

Ok but my main point is : DISNEY! In other words, kid stuff/family stuff from the US mega entertainment conglomerate.

Article on the Russian women's test skates by Anatoly Samokhvalov:

The end of this article on Trusova mentions she will compete at the U.S. Classic in Norwood, Mass.:

I don’t know if referring to Trusova as metal-head is again referring to her music? I’d say Iggy Pop is punk, not metal. (Is it Iggy Pop or a cover? Hard to tell on arena sound). Anyway, it’s his song, and it sounds like him, so, punk.
