Just saw this on msnbc breaking news and I gasped. I had expected this but not in 24 hours after the announcement that he had stopped medical treatment. He would have been 82 on Wednesday.

I was watching TV while working out and this news appeared. I stopped to post this. I am sad, even though I had political disagreements with him. He was a great man with integrity and courage. He will be missed. R.I.P. :(

There is a thread in the PI forum but I am posting this here for a broader audience and to send condolences to his family.

The statements that are pouring out from both sides show what an extraordinary man he was. He seems to have been one of the last who truly was a member of the Party of Lincoln! May his family find the strength they need and may he rest in peace!
 
So apparently the White House press office is saying that this Tweet is the President's official statement on McCain's passing. A *Tweet*. How disrespectful :mad:

Is anyone surprised that Trump couldn't pass up a final way to disrespect McCain?

After yesterday's announcement that he was stopping treatment I expected this to come quickly, just not this quickly.

RIP to the final statesman of the Republican Party.
 
On TV they are showing the procession from Sedona to Phoenix. I don't know if there will be viewing for the general public.

I saw McCain just once from a distance when he attended a Phoenix Suns game. He loved sports and he supported all the Arizona sports teams.

This must be a very difficult time for his family. My thoughts are with them.

There is a HBO documentary 'For whom the bell tolls' about McCain, 1 hour 45 min long. I am going to look for it.

McCain's hearse is now approaching Phoenix. His body will be taken to the funeral home. A statement from the family is expected tomorrow morning.

Right now many people have gathered outside the mortuary where the hearse carrying McCain's body has arrived. Many are carrying flags. It is too far from my home so I am not going.

RIP Senator McCain. He was an amazing man. Our country's leadership needs more people like him.

I've read that his wish was to be buried at the Naval Academy cemetery. I'm sure we'll hear more about funeral arrangements in the coming days, but so far I've read that he wanted Obama and GW Bush to give eulogies.
 
As an Arizona resident for the last 24 years, I thought I knew McCain very well, but all I knew was about his POW years and his political career. I knew how he met his wife who was 17 years younger than him. On their first date they both lied about their ages. He made himself a little younger and she made herself a little older. :) Recently his daughter Meghan has appeared more often. I always appreciated how gracious he was. In his concession speech in 2008, he said about Obama- I wish his grandmother was alive to see this. Senator McCain was a compassionate man.

Last night on our local channels many people shared their memories of him. I did not know that he loved literature, that he loved sports (though I had seen him supporting Arizona sports teams). I didn't know that he had a great sense of humor, and that he was fun to be with, when he was not being interviewed. He was tough on intervierwers.

Last night many people had gathered on the roads, with flags, and putting flowers near his office. I may go there today.

In the coming days I am going to learn a lot more about this great man. I never voted for him but I always respected him.

Many of the reporters who covered him have said that he enjoyed being in their midst; spending hours with them, discussing a multitude of subjects.

The feeling seems to have been mutual.
They are grieving his loss, also.

What was even amazing was that he was offered an early release because his father had been a navy admiral, but McCain refused to leave his band of brothers. He stuck through the whole ordeal with them.
