Oscars 2021

Movies like Mank, Ma Rainey and Chicago 7 are on Netflix, which should have made it easy for the GP to view. But they didn’t exactly get the same viewership as Yes Day or Bridgerton or The Queen’s Gambit. I tried with all of them, but I barely could watch them. I thought they were so boring.

I am not sure what it is with Netflix and their Oscar movies, but I have not enjoyed one of them. I have actively disliked every single one of them. Ugh, The Marriage Story!

I have not see any of the other movies, but a movie like Minari would be right up my alley. The others I suspect I would have an easier time to sit through. At the very least.

This kind of reminds me of the year people were anticipating a win for Mickey Rourke for The Wrestler. He had the initial Awards buzz (won the Golden Globe and the BAFTA) and Sean Penn won the SAG for Milk. Though it wasn't a clear shot, people were anticipating Mickey as he had more buzz, but Sean swooped in for the win. (Having seen both of those films, I agreed with Sean winning).

The awards season is always fluid though. There's always someone with huge buzz at first, then someone else swoops in and takes the spotlight, then there's someone else getting the recognition right before the Oscars.

from the article above:
This year’s Oscars had what had been understood to be a strict “no Zoom” policy that meant nominees needed to either turn up in Los Angeles or in one of the “hubs” – including one at the BFI Southbank in London.
That seems short-sighted.

Although it does explain how the Oscar winners in the 'hubs' had statues on hand

I think they wanted to be so opposite of every award show that used Zoom or other webcam tech. since CV. It was great for the Emmys back in September but by April, it seemed people wanted “real” awards again. It also didn’t help that the Emmys were more-or-less well-done while the Globes and SAG had some complaints.

It also kind of helped that at the Emmys, the cast of Schitt's Creek were all together, almost in their own hub. And since about 1/3 of the entire ceremony was spent cutting to there, it worked well.

It's too bad that Sir Anthony couldn't make his speech live, but what did they expect for an 83 year old, in the midst of a pandemic, in a country which seemingly has high travel restrictions? It's not quite as easy for him to just pop over to London for the day. Though on the bright side, the scenery behind him in his video was gorgeous.

I watch the Oscars every year to see what people are wearing and I've always seen at least a few of the movies so I have people to root for. I didn't watch at all this year. I hadn't seen any of the movies and I just couldn't bother to watch. I don't think it's sudden disinterest; just this last year has been crazy and my current priorities have changed. But I'm sure I'll watch again once I develop an interest in who wins. Reading this thread, I would have been very unhappy that few clips were shown (that's one of my favorite parts). Also, the clips encourage people to see the movies! There have been movies I thought I had no interest in seeing until I saw the clips on the Oscars. Where were their marketing people?
