I read all the books as well, and thoroughly enjoyed them.

I didn't even know there was a 1975 series. I might check it out after I finish series 1. I think Prime only has the PBS version (which tends to cut and shorten the episodes from the BBC) which may explain some of the plot jumps the show has.

I have to admit I think a lot of the reason why I'm still watching is because of Aidan Turner. He and Eleanor Tomlinlson make a really good looking couple. I remember Tomlinson from a movie she did as a teen called Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging and thought she was pretty striking then.
 
OK, people, I loooved the original Poldark. Watched it in 75. Bought the tape (yeah, tape, VCR) Poldark One and Two. Watched both. As recently as two years ago.

Watched the new one prepared to hate it. No swaggerin Robin Ellis? No Angharad Rees making pouty eyes in a red wig? Couldn't be the same....:mad:

And you know what? It's not the same and it's perfectly good, even as good as the original. The plot moved more slowly, but the acting was fine, the country side was gorgeous, and it captured the flavor and ethos perfectly, IMHO. And as someone whose ancestors were Cornish iron miners, although Angharad was glamorous, the new Demelza is probably more realistic:p
 
We started watching The Honourable Woman with Maggie Gyllenhaal. So far we've seen the first 3 episodes. I kind of want to know what happens, but at the same time, I don't really like any of the characters and I find the dialogue a bit impenetrable and unnecessarily obscure or something. (Can't think of the right word.)

For those who have watched: Does it get better in the later episodes?
 
I really enjoyed it. I don't know if it gets better since I was engrossed with it since the beginning, but the story really keeps picking up towards the end.

We watched "the Honourable Woman" (over a year ago, back when we did, gasp, DVDs) and ended up liking it, but TBH I am straining to remember the difference between the episodes. I remember being confused by the beginning and actually found the middle a tad too, precious is not the right word, but the entire flashback to the Middle East. As necessary as it is to Maggie's motivations, that exposition could have been a lot shorter, IMO (not that I can remember exactly how long it was). The wrap up and resolution was good, I think the last two episodes?

Sorry, wish I could be more specific.:(

That helps. Thanks! ETA: I know what you mean about the "precious" aspect. Hard to find the right word exactly. But it's like the show is aiming to somehow be more deep and secretive than it actually is or needs to be.
 
Coming in October: Mascots.

Must. see. this! It looks like classic Christopher Guest, with all our old favourites back together again. Plus a couple of additions -- I spotted Chris O'Dowd in that trailer, though he isn't listed (yet) on imdb.

I'm a fan of the actress Brit Marling and it looks like she has developed a new series for Netflix called "The OA." But I do not have any info about the series beyond the title and cast list. I'm not sure I like so many things "shrouded in secrecy."

Also--I'm a fan of The Honourable Woman." This felt so adult, so real and so possible in today's world. I thought the two female leads were wonderful.
 
Just watching Stranger Things this weekend (a couple of episodes at a time). I love the 80's nostalgia. It takes me back to being a kid and watching The Goonies. It does kind of remind me a bit of Fringe. I'm definitely hooked!
 
I'm absolutely hooked on "Friday Night Lights"! Has anyone else seen it? It's the drama series around a high school football team in Texas and for anyone who is like me a sucker for sports films/shows and good drama - this show is 'guilty pleasure'-good! We just watched Friday Night Lights this summer. Totally missed it when it was on tv. Such a good show.
 
I was never a big Riggins fan. ;) But Friday Night Lights is one of the best shows that's ever been on American TV IMO. incredible acting, writing, and it shows you what a part of America is like more realistically than almost any other show I can think of.

Just wait till you get to Seasons 4/5, @Xela M, they are almost the best IMO, and showcase the debut of extremely talented actor Michael B. Jordan.

:eek: How can you not love Riggins :eek: Were you not totally in love with a "Riggins"-type at your High School? I still remember the Riggins of my High School and of course all the girls melted at the sight of him.

I loved Season 1, don't necessarily like the Laundry/Tyra storyline in Season 2 (the only unrealistic part of the show so far and because I love the Riggins/Tyra interaction) and Lyla Garrity gets on my nerves at alot! Apart from that, it's awesome!!

All the characters are so realistic! My favourite charcters are Riggins, Smash, Tyra, Buddy Garrity and coach Taylor (I think that says something about me :shuffle: because those are the types of people I end up with in real life)

I probably did have a crush on a Riggins type in high school. ;) But now that I'm older, I prefer some of the other guys on the show ... And actually Landry is kinda cute in my book. I loved Tyra/Landry. Each to his own. ;)

Lyla was one of my favorite characters. I liked Lyla, Riggins, Landry, Saracen, Coach, Tami, and in the later seasons Vince, Jess, and Becky. Actually I really liked most of the characters, I guess some just more than others. :)

He's not on every season but I am in that group that believes "The Wire" was the very best in television programming. I think it is important to watch it from episode one though so that you understand how this rag-tag group came together. I think the season with the middle school kids (including Jordan) was my favorite.

No guilt. I loved that series. Connie Britton and Kyle Chandler were fantastic, as was the writing.

I still haven't seen "The Wire." When it was on tv, a friend of mine kept telling me to watch. It's been on my list for years.
 
I have been enjoying the Australian drama/comedy Offspring. Many laugh-out-loud moments in the episode I watched tonight.
 
Has anyone watched the Starz/BBC series "The Missing"? Season 1 is on Amazon Prime right now. I binged it and am not.at.all over the ending. Great series, glad there is a second season but it won't continue with the same characters. It sucked me in like no other whodunit show, aside from maybe season 1 of "The Killing."
 
I've been watching The Americans. Season 1 was reasonably entertaining, but the female lead (Keri Russell) turned into a full-blown TV stereotype in the second season. "I am a KGB agent, trained to be a cold-blooded assassin. But I am a female character; I have feelings; therefore I must act on those feelings to gain audience sympathy and f*ck up my assignments and force the male characters to bail me out of the messes I create. Because that's what sympathetic female characters do." GMAFB. I liked her a lot better in the beginning, when she was a badass who also happened to love her kids.

I've just started on season 5 and omg I thought Lyla was insufferable, but Becky makes me want to fast forward all the scenes involving her. I think she's the most annoying character in television history. I even stopped liking Riggins because he has so many scenes with Becky :mad: From the later seasons, the only additional character I really like is Luke, although I don't mind Vince

You like Luke more than Vince!?!?! Luke was never one of my faves.

I can see how you could find Becky annoying. What I liked about her was how realistic she seemed. And I liked that the show did the abortion storyline with her character, because again, whether you approve or not ... it's realistic and not something you see very often on American TV.
