I think I've now found my next thing to watch on Netflix.

I watched Dance Academy several years ago. It's not normally my type of show, but I got drawn in and watched the whole series!

Lately I've been enjoying a couple of lighter shows. The episodes are around 30 minutes each, so they're good if you're looking for a quick distraction.

Dreamland: An Australian comedy about workers in a government agency, involving humorous looks at office politics and bureaucratic red tape.

A Very Secret Service: A Netflix-produced show, in French with English subtitles. It's about a young trainee and his colleagues working for a French secret service agency in the 1960s.

I dont know if there is a connection, but I saw a headline the other day that said there's a case in the US courts that could make it a felony to share passwords for things like Netflix. If that happens, I guess our budget is going up -- my sister is NOT going to jail to save me money! I wonder if meanwhile Netflix is fighting the sharing technologically? We have had trouble getting in too lately, but only on our TV (I generally watch on my iPad) and only sporadically.

I hope that fails because I think that's stupid. Depending on your package, Netlflix already limits how many users can watch at a time. Limiting who uses the password won't change that. Why don't streaming services just do that? And what if you want to watch Netflix while traveling? As for not staying logged on, that could be related to the device. I've had issues with staying logged on the AppleTV but it's been fine in the Fire Sticks (except for the occasional hiccup). We're actually replacing the ATV (which is a second generation model) with a Fire Stick. Yahoo! That thing was a overpriced paperweight. I hate it. :p
 
Netflix responded that they don't care if families share but you can only have two devices running at the same time. If you have more using netflix at the same time, you have to pay more.
 
In the last month, I've watched two series on Netflix starring a British actress named Anna Friel. One was a short-lived US show called American Odyssey in which she plays a US soldier caught up in some kind of skullduggery in Afghanistan perpetuated by the US government. The other is a new British series called Marcella in which she plays a homicide detective with a lot of baggage and a neurological problem. I never heard of this actress before but she's sure convincing playing badass yet three-dimensional women under duress.
 
Speaking of badass yet 3-D women detectives under duress, does anyone know where to find Helen Mirren's Prime Suspect? I didnt see it on either Amazon Prime or Netflix. Marcella is definitely on my list. I was wondering who this Anna Friel was.
 
I watched the first couple episodes of Marcella and was not too impressed. It seems to be what you would get if Law & Order: C.I. And Jessica Jones had a love child. The troubled anti-hero who is smarter than everyone else and comes with all sorts of baggage not to mention pretzel like background murder mystery. I can see the Jessica Jones type plot twist coming a mile away. Then Marcella is able to rejoin the police after how many years away with just one phone call?! Meh! Not for me.

I am pumped for Stranger Things!!! :cheer:

I just checked Amazon Prime and it looks like Seasons 3, 4 and 6 and 7 are available. Happy binging!

AcornTV has it. All 7 seasons.

Knowledge Network here aired it again not that long ago, and although I loved it the first time around I had a really hard time watching it in repeats. It was just too dated, even though of course many of the issues Tennison dealt with are still alive today.

I think I saw her in Lulu on Broadway.

In the US she's probably best known for Pushing Daisies.

I haven't seen Marcella -- maybe I will give it a try.

I know her from Pushing Daisies, didn't care for the few episodes of American Odyssey I watched. The two roles are so different, I had trouble seeing her in the second one. I have not watched Marcella for the same reason. She had a part in a recent small film, Urban and the Shed Crew, that has only had a limited release so far, but I would love to see it.
 
@znhurston, thanks for the tips about Prime Suspect. I must have searched only for season 1 (?). Also @Artemis@BC. So Artemis, what is dated about it? I only ever saw one or two episodes, but I don't remember thinking that. But then I tend to positively LIKE dated things, Bach, Mozart, 1930s movies and such. Although I have a problem with Columbo, which my husband loves. I can handle about as much of that as I can Guy Fiere on the Food Network, another of my husband's man-crushes.

You're right! The plot line and characters derivative, and too much like US primetime, network show but I thought the acting and direction were a cut above and I enjoyed Friel's performance a lot.
 
I remember Anna Friel in this Canadian movie called The War Bride (or something) years ago where she played a British war bride traveling to her new husband's rural community in Canada, and I found her appealing at first but then in the second half she kept saying " 'ello luv" in the most obnoxious way that I couldn't anymore.

To me "dated" is not the same as "old." It's not something I'm really able to pin down, but some TV and movies stand the test of time, while others don't. A lot of it has to do with tone and style, and to what degree the show is "of its time."

Police procedurals are particularly vulnerable to feeling dated, IMO. I had the same reaction when I tried to watch some old Morse episodes not that long ago. (Mind you that could be because I couldn't stop comparing it to Lewis, which is about 100x better, and Endeavour, which is about 10x better.)
 
That's interesting. I watched a couple of episodes of Morse years ago, wasnt impressed, but got totally drawn into Lewis. I much preferred Lewis's working class, Methodist style to Morse's arrogance, and I appreciated all the ornate plots. But later, I watched all of Morse because my husband was attached to it. And I found myself thinking the original show was far superior to the spinoff, mainly because of the drawing of Morse's character. He is just a more complicated, interesting, and in the end semi-tragic figure than Lewis. But I will still watch new episodes of Lewis. I do like that actor, and John Thaw is riveting. It was fun to see him turn up as a villain in another show. Just my opinion.

I guess when it comes to old TV shows there is dated and then there is dated. Murder, She Wrote is dated but still fun, while Columbo is too much of a one-note cat and mouse game (though we did finally hit a good episode the other night, about a winemaker... I will watch about one episode of Columbo a month with hubby as a special treat. :) ) Maybe I will see what you mean when I see Prime Suspect ... there have been a lot of shows with strong, broody ( ;) to @Tesla) female detectives since then... but somehow I think Helen Mirren would make it timeless.

I like Endeavour too.

I loved it originally, but although John Thaw was an amazing actor and perfect for the role, I found that the my interpretations of the subtleties of Morse's character were based on my reading of Colin Dexter's books more than what was happening on screen. Plus "tortured soul detective" is such a cliché. And while Lewis might be "less interesting" on the surface, the Lewis-Hathaway relationship is far more interesting for me -- and enjoyable -- than the Morse-Lewis dynamic ever was.
 
Where would we be without the tortured soul detective? You just summed up all my (and @Tesla's?) favorite shows. :) That figure is still very much alive... Longmire, Broadchurch, River, The Killing, George Gently. etc. etc.

I do know what you mean about the Morse-Lewis relationship - Morse treats him like a dog if not worse - and at the end Lewis is extremely angry about that and Morse's refusal to retire and make room for him to move up. I find it fascinating though. There is an enduring mutual affection and loyalty of sorts beneath the abuse on one side and the resentment on the other, yet the hierarchy in their relationship never budges. The relationship is not easy to put into words and not exactly pleasant to watch, but both actors make it believable. To me.

I only tried one of the Colin Dexter novels and it did nothing for me, so my reactions are purely to the show itself.
 
Ok, putting Stranger Things on my to-watch list. But I'm waiting for Gilmore Girls before I renew my Netflix subscription, and still no word on when that will be coming (though it's listed as "2016").
