Thought I'd check out something with a bit more depth, picked up a movie called Copperhead. It's a drama from 2013 about two families from New York state during the time of the Civil War. There's a lot of people in the cast you'd recognize, Billy Campbell maybe the most famous as one of the fathers of the two families. Those families have quite differing political views and wouldn't you know it...the son from one family is in love with the daughter of the other. There's basically two parts of the story, the first about the familes, their community and how different views create conflict for many. The second part is about the young people, their friendships and romance. There's some good moments and the movie is decent enough, but overall, it's kind of dry. Nothing to rave about, really. Interesting to hear about a story from this time, but it seemed like something best played for a high school class to view then discuss.

I saw Call Me By Your Name....BEAUTIFUL. Gentle, languid movie about a gentle languid romance, beautifully shot...all those gorgeous Italian summer colours, ripe peaches, dusty stone, quiet lakes, al fresco meals. That movie left me in a yummy mood that lingered for a while.

Annihilation is receiving good reviews. Having read the trilogy I was hesitant about a movie because I thought it would be difficult to transition to the screen. It sounds as if it worked.

Feb. 23rd - Hannah (Limited) – French drama with Charlotte Rampling. From imdb.com: “Intimate portrait of a woman drifting between reality and denial when she is left alone to grapple with the consequences of her husband's imprisonment.”

I don't watch foreign language films often, but this one seems interesting. The trailer doesn't say much about the movie, it sets a tone for the movie instead. Which makes me unsure whether I should seek it out at some point. So if anybody sees it, I hope you'll post your thoughts about it and whether you recommend it or not. :)

I love Ex Machina so I am also curious about Annihilation. Though it might be a little too scary for me :)...I have a ...delicate...constitution for scary stories.

There's always a big box of popcorn to hide behind.

:D

I watched Quo Vadis (1951) a while back, I think because it starred Deborah Kerr and I had seen her in something else which made me want to see more of her movies. Quo Vadis was nominated for eight academy awards (including best picture and two supporting actor nominations) but won none. Which I'm okay with because I didn't think it was that great. Only Peter Ustinov's performance stood out as bringing some life to the movie, although I'm sure many might think his performance was too over-the-top to be taken seriously. Ustinov was one of the two best supporting actor nominations for the movie and I thought his performance was a lot of campy fun. But overall, the movie lacked spark. Maybe Ustinov's lively performance was so big, it over-shadowed the rest of the movie. I found it to be standard 50's era historical drama. Imdb.com rates the movie quite high, at 7.2, but I gave it a 5.0. Robert Taylor also stars alongside Kerr and Ustinov.

We watched Black Panther yesterday with the kids and everyone loved it especially the General and the sister ( favorite character of my daughter). It was visually stunning, the sceneries and the costumes were to die for. The soundtrack is also very enjoyable. It was a more serious Marvel movie dealing with strong current issues making this movie much deeper and interesting than your typical superhero movie.

Red Sparrow Promo Stop: A reminder that sexism in Hollywood is real
https://ca.style.yahoo.com/jennifer...reminder-sexism-hollywood-real-231815921.html

Now here's an article that has a lot of food for thought.

My first reaction was, "how sexist is this"??!!! Which a lot of other people thought as well, for the male stars of the movie to be dressed so warmly while Jennifer Lawerence is in a skimpy dress - which must have been uncomfortable for her considering how many layers of clothing all the men were wearing. Outrage all over the place for how Lawrence was treated.

Second reaction. Lawrence states that the dress was her choice, she wanted to wear it and should be allowed to wear what she wants without anyone and everyone getting all in a huff. Which is interesting in that it's kind of sexist for people to decide for a woman as to when she is being treated unfairly...and to get angry on her behalf, as if she's just a woman and can't do that on her own behalf.

Third reaction. If the promotion team and the photographer knew that Lawrence wanted to wear that dress, couldn't they have moved everyone to some indoor location where everyone could have been comfortable? Or was the glorious background of a random skyline of grey buildings too good for the quality of the photo to pass up.

Fourth reaction...just now. As I'm about to post this, I didn't think it was right that the headline referenced Lawrence specifically. She had no issue with anything until people started getting huffy on her bahalf. So I changed the title of the article. I think it's somewhat sexist of the writer to put the spotlight on Lawrence rather than her male co-stars. Or that spotlight on the promotion team and photographer.

Your thoughts? Anyone going to boycott Red Sparrow because of this photo? ;) :P

What I've watched lately :

The Royal Exchange : French and Spanish courts swapping their princesses for peace. I would have enjoyed the movie a lot more, if not for that old woman who arrived late, used her cell phone to finally sit at the back row (of course mine, while there were only like 10 people in the theater) and started to make all kind of noise. When I finally gave up and asked her to be less noisy, she went nuts, shouting that I was crazy and adding "How could you understand that movie, you're not even French !". Old witch, be damned ! Back to the movie itself now, honestly at first I didn't like that typically French acting, very theatrical, I mean stage-like, especially for the King of Spain's character (played by Lambert Wilson), which really looked OTT. As the story unfolds though, this acting makes sense and looks appropriate for the portrayal of each character. The teenager playing king Louis XV stood out (in a good way).

The Shape of Water : Somehow I was not enough in a fairy tale mood. So, although I liked how each character's background was well-developed, overall I found it a bit long and kinda boring.

Bravo Virtuoso : Armenian dark comedy about a young clarinetist who in order to fund his orchestra semi-willingly (and initially by accident) takes on a hired killer's contracts. Crazy movie, rather weird, I liked it.

Black Panther : I liked it too, probably thanks to the good looking actors, self-mockery and often good music. LOVED the female warriors. I'm not sure what to think about the end of the villain. To me he was not villain enough, or his background made me sympathize too much with his character (but then, had he not been handsome as an adult, I wouldn't have cared that much about his childhood story).

I, Tonya : I very much enjoyed the first part of the movie (before the incident). Loved LaVona's character haha.

There's always a big box of popcorn to hide behind.

:D

Don't get me wrong, I love eating popcorn. I just don't do it at the movies and I absolutely can't stand noisy eaters. Watching a movie with all this parasitic noise of loud popcorn, sweet or whatever crap eaters is the worst. This, plus the cell phones and people chatting. Going to the movies with all the distracting stuff around has not been so enjoyable in the last five years or so. Too often I have to walk out of a session because of noise, the latest was just 2 days ago, because of a couple who arrived late and sat 2 rows before me. They were so loud with their damn popcorn and laughing because they knew it bothered the couple who was sitting below them as well. Unfortunately they were not the only noisy ones. A lot of others with their buckets, m&m's, soda bottles or cans just wouldn't behave either. So, no Mary and the Witch's Flower for me :(

I'm pissed because I love watching movie in a theater, but I can't stand other people's (IMO) misbehavior. Partly because of this, and also because I need to focus on violin till the end of the year, I've ended my unlimited pass subscription. I will still go to the movies though, just not as often. Pity my subscription ends at the end of this month while so many good movies are released precisely on Feb 28. Should have planned a day off haha.

Your thoughts? Anyone going to boycott Red Sparrow because of this photo? ;) :p
The only things bothering me on the dress are the stripes and the darker black triangles, but I guess it just echoes the movie. Sure it would have been better with a skimpy dressed Matthias Schoenaerts :p but I won't boycott Red Sparrow lol.

I read an interesting interview with Jordan Peele in the current issue of Time magazine. Of course the questions were about 'Get out' but they also included his own experiences as an African American.

Another good movie from 1939: Dodge City. Errol Flynn works in the cattle business, but when something horrible goes wrong in Dodge City, he agrees to become the town sherriff. Olivia de Havilland has personal reasons for taking a great dislike towards him, but with time, both characters change and... Well, I'll let you all guess if they end up happy together. :D In the DVD extras, it is mentioned that Dodge City includes every single Western film scene that could be imagined...but the movie was made before all these types of scenes became western standards. So don't fear that you're going to miss out on anything you could hope for with a western with a bit of romance in it. Flynn and de Havilland are perfect in their roles and perfect as a screen couple. I finally got around to reading about Flynn on Wikipedia and while he was great on screen, he seems to be pretty much a failure in his personal life. Including (alleged?) encounters with (15-ish?) teenage girls and possibly an unwanted pregnancy and abortion. Seems like he did a lot of drinking and carousing as well. His story sounds so unappealing that I was considering not watching any more of his movies. In spite of the write-ups of many, many of his movies sounding very interesting. I finally decided that avoiding movies that were starring and made by many more decent people doesn't make sense. That said, I'm not going to look at his page at Wikipedia and note the movies of his that I'd like to see. Maybe some day, but for now I've got long lists of movies still to see, so I'll focus on those. As for Dodge City, I recommend it.

I thought Pixels was a much better movie than I was led to believe. It seemed like nobody had anything good to say about it. It's like people were upset that they ended up seeing an Adam Sandler movie. Like there hadn't been fifteen Adam Sandler movies before Pixels to prepare them for what they should expect. I thought the story was entertaining, the special effects were fantastic and the supporting cast was quite decent. I'd say the only real fault with the movie is putting the comedic brilliance of Jane Krakowski into a three-line straight lady role. It was weird to see her in this movie and not give her anything at all to do. Overall the movie was fun and entertaining and whoever spread bad word of mouth about this movie is no fun! :P

I've started to go see movies in the theatre recently and I swear one of these days I'm going to make a scene. If people are being over-the-top noisy, I will first ask them to be quiet so everyone can enjoy the movie. That's their one chance. If they are excessively noisy after that, I'm going to stand up, and as loudly possible, I'll say, "THAT'S IT....I'M GETTING THE MANAGER". And then I will do just that.

Okay, just typing that makes me think that I'm going to wimp out and just sit there in silence. Anybody dare me to do what I just typed out? Maybe a lot of dares will make me take action! :D

The other day during Black Panther we had a bunch of obnoxious brats around us. Just how much noise can you make rummaging in a bag of popcorn  And then the loud comments without the parents taking any action whatsoever to make that one kid keep quiet even after people complaining. So it is an international problem. But like you I tend to wimp out even though I'm boiling inside to make a huge fuss.
So I dare you Peter for all our sake :D

I was at a theater a few years ago where some teens kept walking in and out, in and out, clomping up and down the stairs very loudly, etc. Finally after about 20 minutes of this (as the movie was playing), one gentleman got up and said something along the lines of, "ENOUGH!" with more after that. He really gave it to them. Of course, it didn't stop the clomping up and down the stairs a few more times, but things quieted down after that.

Many of the big mega theaters now have arcades in them and other things to occupy people. Honestly, why even bother paying the high price for a movie ticket if some won't even bother watching the movie? What a waste of money.

There were some gigglers sitting right behind me last night while I saw Maze Runner: Death Cure. It seemed to start when Will Poulter's character entered the story. I wondered if they were thinking of his hilarious work in We're The Millers. But this was Poulter's third time in this drama/action series, so it's not like we haven't seen him do dramatic work before. (Poulter's done good dramatic work in The Revenant and Detroit, so it's not like he's new to dramatic audiences.) Anyway, I didn't stand up and bellow, "QUIET RIGHT NOW"!!!! The giggling was quiet and only happened a few times before there was quiet again. But your cheering might get me to take action at some point. :D One thing I wanted to mention about theatre noise is that it's to be expected (I think) the earlier in the movie's release that you see it. I try to wait until the end of a movie's run so that I have lots of space and lots of quiet. I did find it strange last night that these people sat directly behind us when the theatres was less than ten percent full. I always try to sit far away from others. Like I said, I like my space. Oh, and I saw a movie....

I enjoyed Maze Runner: Death Cure, but I did find it a bit too long. Like the Hunger Games and Twilight movies (Harry Potter, as well), they maybe should have split this final film into two movies. (I'm pretty sure this is supposed to be a trilogy.) It felt like they were trying to cover too much story. The cast was the highlight for me and the action and CGI were well done. But the story has too many clichés. Not only did I often know what was going to happen, but I had to w-a-i-t to see what was going to happen. I didn't find either of these problems in the first two movies. Or if these problems were in those movies, they happened seldomly enough that I could let it slide. Plus, like Black Panther, there were too many plot points that were problematic for me to just go along for the ride. I still recommend Death Cure for those who have been watching the series, but with this one, you have to go into it willing to cut it a lot of slack.

I eventually managed to get a day off to enjoy my last day of unlimited pass, so I saw 4 movies today.

Call Me By Your Name : Having read the book and knowing Armie Hammer would play Oliver, I obviously had high expectations. Unfortunately I must admit I was quite disappointed. Okay the movie is (still) beautiful, the acting is good or very good overall but quite a few times, I didn't catch any genuine chemistry between Hammer & Chalamet. It felt more like acting than being the character. Also, it's frustrating that some (IMO important) bits were completely cut out or rearranged (dinner in Rome) probably because of production costs. I wished it was more graphic, crude. The most effective scene was one that was actually really faithful to the book, the conversation with the dad. Music, on point.

Corps Etranger (Foreign Body) : French-Tunisian movie about a young woman who arrives illegally in France and manages to find a job, helping a lady who lost her husband recently. Okay acting, but crap scenario. Not worth seeing in my opinion.

Lady Bird : Another movie that I was so eager to watch. Well-written and well-directed. Convincing actors. Some cues/situations were both light and harsh or poignant. I loved it.

Les garçons sauvages (The Wild Boys) : For the storyline, I'm copying the summary from the YT link : « Five adolescents commit a savage crime. A Dutch Captain takes them in charge for a cruise on a haunted sailboat. Exhausted by his methods, the boys prepare to mutiny. Their port of call is a supernatural island with luxuriant vegetation and bewitching powers that holds a disturbing secret. » This movie is like no other current movie. There is a retro feeling to it with, most of the movie being in black and white and with some old-fashioned studio scenes. Visually and philosophically psychedelic. I found it very creative and really good but I guess the main audience will just find it weird.

Yesterday, I also finally got to watch Mary and the Witch's Flower : Enjoyable but nothing creative in it.

I've started to go see movies in the theatre recently and I swear one of these days I'm going to make a scene. If people are being over-the-top noisy, I will first ask them to be quiet so everyone can enjoy the movie. That's their one chance. For Lady Bird, there was a woman who kept making noises (coughing loudly, rummaging through her bags and her coat). I couldn't stand it anymore but, as the theater was full, I couldn't move to discreetely tell her to stop so I gave up and angrily shouted "Madam, you're making too much noise !!". An old grandma who was sitting next to me said "You're right". The woman went quiet for a bit and then started again being annoying. I can't even remember the last time people weren't annoying at the movies/opera/concert/ballet/show. It's disheartening. People just don't realize how rude they act, or they don't care. Tonight I saw a musical. Some old woman just wouldn't stop chatting with her man, but what's funny is that she told the girls sitting below her to stop checking their cellphones. I think that quite often, people are targeting teenagers and young adults thinking they have no manners but from my experience, old people are just as much annoying, including with their cell phones !! Also, WTH would people think it's ok to bring their damn (and not quiet at all) baby to a musical ?!!

So, I too, dare you Peter :cheer:

Unfortunately, I think that death glares and "threatening" to call the manager just doesn't work anymore. BTW I doubt the manager would do anything, especially if popcorns are involved. To me, it's a lost cause. Or maybe is it just a lost cause in France !

Barbra Streisand on How She Battled Hollywood’s Boys’ Club
http://variety.com/2018/film/news/barbra-streisand-oscars-sexism-in-hollywood-clone-dogs-1202710585/

Long article, full of interesting things. Such as Streisand being the first female to win an Oscar for songwriting (for 1977's "Evergreen"). I did not know that!

And...

Only five women have ever been nominated in the category [best director], among them Greta Gerwig this year for “Lady Bird.” Streisand is disappointed that Dee Rees (“Mudbound”) and Patty Jenkins (“Wonder Woman”) weren’t also recognized. She is well aware of the dismal statistics and how they still haven’t improved.

... that the first film ever made was directed by a woman (who is not credited for this).

... her Harvey Weinstein encounter.

... how it took her 14 years to get to make Yentl. (I remember people criticizing her for playing such a young role...sounds like if she got to play that role when she first planned, then she would have been the age that the complainers wanted her to be...)

... that Streisand asked to direct "Hidden Figures" but the man who wrote the screenplay got the job (Streisand says she felt he did a good job).

Just got back from seeing Black Panther and it's a beautiful, powerful film. I freaking loved it. The story was great, the characters (specifically the women) were well developed...I don't think there was a single thing I didn't like. I'm so happy the movie is doing well at the box office, it deserves to.
And the soundtrack is absolutely amazing.

Every time people have been sitting next to me being noisy or using cell phones and have remained unmoved by death glares and/or quiet requests, and I've been annoyed enough to go find an usher or manager, they have taken care of the issue. It's worth a try instead of just assuming the manager won't do anything.

I've started to go see movies in the theatre recently and I swear one of these days I'm going to make a scene. I did find it strange last night that these people sat directly behind us when the theatres was less than ten percent full.
I have a specific place I like to sit. It's the exact right distance from the screen for my eyesight. If the only people in the theater are sitting near there, it's annoying to me but I will still sit there. It's my spot!

My experience from working customer service jobs, (5 years at McDonald's, a year and change at the Dollar Store from hell and 5 and half years at London Drugs) I have found that it's rarely the young people that are problematic, with a few exceptions obviously. My worst customers have always been over 65. When I realised the pattern I was initially very confused, pretty much all the over-65's I know never behaved rudely to customer service employees. But there is definitely a significant contingent of older baby boomers that think everyone under the age of 30-35 is spoiled and doesn't care about anyone but themselves. I've also heard the "you just can't get good customer service anymore" speech every so often. I just smile and go out of my to serve them as well and as quickly as I can. It's worked pretty well for me so far.

That being said, there are some positively lovely seniors that order photos from our frankly ridiculously set up kiosks who usually need help and they are always so happy when I help them and explain how the kiosks work. I like it when I can make someones life a little bit better by helping them out.

As for my brothers death glaring people in movie theatres. My brother is very quiet, he has a speech impediment and never went back into speech therapy after we moved, but he wears a giant trench coat and walks like he's much taller than he is so it seems to help with the image. It's weird to me that people find him intimidating because he's just my brother. But if it gets weirdo's in the theatre to be quiet and/or stop kicking our seats and dissuades sketchballs from harassing me/women on the bus then I am all for him being seen as intimidating.

Why is this a real thing? I know Hollywood loves a remake, but why? This trailer was so unconvincing.

Paging @alilou ;) I hope this ends up on Netflix at some point! Love Dance Academy in all it's cheesy teenage drama glory :)

Brave New Jersey is one of those movies that is categorized as a comedy...but a movie that might make you chuckle once or twice and maybe smile a few times (at best). So it's not really deserving of being called a comedy. In my opinion! It's more a lighthearted drama with a little bit of action and a little bit of comedy thrown in. It's about a town of people when the Orson Welles radio version of War of the Worlds was broadcast. Everyone goes a bit crazy and we get to see how different groups of people handle the situation before they all end up in the same place for the big finale. Long before that moment, my friends and I all had our faces in our electronic devices and Brave New Jersey had become background noise. Those unfortunate enough to be cast in this movie include Tony Hale and Anna Camp. If you're a fan of either of them, you might want to see this. But that would probably be a mistake. :D
