Italian figure skating news & updates

Per his instagram Memola injured himself competing yesterday after falling on the quad lutz (pelvis felt really weird), he's having an MRI tomorrow after having x-rays yesterday and on top of that while waiting for his x-ray results, someone broke into his car and stole his skates and short program costume and Normatecs :scream:

Well I guess one has to hope that at least it’s nothing too serious, but I have felt the whole season that he is overdoing himself.

(Aljonas car was also broken in in Torino some months ago, so I guess it’s good advise to not leave anything in your car there )

Oh my goodness. this is awful.

Horrific. What will anyone do with Memola's skates and costume? If I were a high-level skater, I might consider putting tracking devices on my skates.

2nd Stage of Elite Championship Series.

Pezzetta WD. Gutmann scored 207.31 and increased her lead in the internal ranking. I believe she is virtually unreachable for the Olympic spot with only Nationals to go (given Pezzetta is not entered at Golden Spin). Nationals score are added to the sum of top 2 scores from rest of the season.

1) Gutmann 411.6 (392.58 substacting step sequences)
2) Joos 373.1 (357.2)
3) Pezzetta 371.31 (355.2)
4) Piredda 348.47 (331.77)

Beccari/Guarise and Ghilardi/Ambrosini WD from Pair competition. Both are set for Golden Spin before Nationals. B/G needs to show up there to continue to have hopes because they are behind now (as their terrible Trialeti Trophy score is factored in).

Rizzo did not improve his ranking in Tallinn. However, as said in earlier comments, Memola has other issues now to deal with.

Ice Dance uses another method to calculate rankings.
Before Nationals, I think the situation for 2nd Euro spot is Manni/Roethlisberger 175 and Paolino/Tuba 173.3

The formula for ice dance is the average of the 3 best competition scores + Italian Championships score. If less than 25 points separate the teams then the FISG can take WS into consideration.

Here's what the standings for Ice Dance look like at the moment:

Beccari/Guarise are out of Golden Spin. I feel like that pretty much puts the final nail in their Olympic hopes as they're currently 40 points behind Ghilardi/Ambrosini for the 2nd spot.

I can’t remember, is there a re-injury? I know they withdrew from the free skate from a recent event.

Nationals are scheduled for 17-20th December in Bergamo.

After this weekend, the situation for Olympic and European spots should be (apologies in advance for typos and small mistakes)

Scores of Nationals is added to the following totals, it does not substitute one of the 2 scores used

MEN

Grassl increased its lead. Circelli marginally improved but it is very behind anwyay

1) Grassl 579.4 (if we have to subtract Step Sequences 561.38) * GPF + Elite Championship Series 1st Stage (hereafter Elite 1)
2) Memola 510.91 (492.69) * Lombardia Trophy + Elite 1
3) Rizzo 506.98 (487.51) * Nepela Trophy + Elite 1
4) Frangipani 432.28 (416.43) *NHK + Elite 1
5) Circelli 417.8 (401.89) * Tallin + Golden Spin

Grassl is a shoo-in
2nd Olympic spot Memola and Rizzo.
For Europeans, Italy have 3 spots, and both of them have a consistent lead over Frangipani.
However, the big issue here is Memola's conditions.

WOMEN

Piredda improved thanks to Golden Spin.

1) Gutmann 411.6 (392.58) * Skate America + Elite 2
2) Joos 373.1 (357.2) * Nepela + Elite 1
3) Pezzetta 371.31 (355.2) * Nepela + Elite 1
4) Piredda 355.36 (339.93) * Golden Spin + Elite 1

The race for Olympic spot seems close.
For Euros, there are 3 spots. So both Pezzetta and Joos can go. Piredda is a bit too distant, 15-18 points gap is quite a lot to overcome in one competition. She needs one of the other two to implode.

PAIRS

1) Conti/Macii 438.91 (429.63 when deducing the lowest scoring lift) * GP Final and Lombardia Trophy
2) Ghilardi/Ambrosini 381.34 (368.56) * Nebelhorn Trophy and Lombardia Trophy
3) Beccari/Guarise 341.24 (328.9) * Nebelhorn Trophy and Trialeti Trophy
4) Caldara/Maglio 333.6 (323.44) * Golden Spin + Swiss Ice Open

Beccari/Guarise are too far behind G/A at this point. Still, if they beat them at Nationals by, let's say, 20 points, I could see the technical commission overruling the ranking, since B/G have so behind mainly due to injuries. That said, their physical condition is also uncertain, given that they withdrew from Golden Spin this week.

ICE DANCE

1) Guignard/Fabbri 199.61
2) Manni/Roethlisberger 175.05 177.89 * Edited: they took part in one of the National Series competitions this weekend and scored 179.97
3) Paolino/Tuba 173.4
4) Dozzi/Papetti 160.76

Now let's take in consideration Tali/LaFornara
159.23 at Golden Spin
If I understand currently, points 4-5 of the regulations say

An athlete who, due to duly documented force majeure or in agreement with the Technical Commission, is unable to take part in the minimum number of international competitions on the ISU calendar or competitions on the FISG calendar used to calculate the ranking, may use the total score from the last international competition held during the previous season.

Except for the cases referred to in points 9, 10, and 11, an athlete's total ranking score is calculated by adding up the scores
of only the competitions in which they participated during the season.
[points 9-10-11 talks about other things, not sure why they mention them...probably because they cut and paste from 2024 regulations....]

So T/L can add the 177.5 from Junior Worlds. Anyway, it would mean an average of 168.365.

The women are stepping up in this early season.

Next week there is the 1st event of the National Championship Elite Series. Men entries have all top athletes going head to head (if no-one withdraws).

Ah, is Grassl becoming Pope at the end of the Free Skating when he reveals the white shirt underneath the black one?

Anna Pezzetta in the Police as expected.
Irma Caldara in the Air Force.
The prison guard procedure is still going on.
A male ice dancer position has been opened in the Firefighters corp.

Noemi Tali got the Prison Guards Athletes corps position
Andrea Tuba got the one in the Firefighters corp.

Will be gutted if Rizzy Mizzy doesn't get a spot. Can't believe he's already 27. Feel like I was watching him on the JGP yesterday.

Thank you for compiling all the information. It's interesting to see Melissa Cachova/Ivan Morozov entered here in Junior Dance instead of Four Nationals. I would have expected to see them skate for Czechia rather than Italy. I wonder who between the two has Italian citizenship.

Not sure if they tried with Czechia, but around June they were intending to represent Slovakia, Zanni sent a request to the federation which was denied.
