Hurricane Maria

(((Jimena)))

My heart breaks for you and all the others who are going through this. It is beyond my imagination how hard this must be. Thanks for keeping in touch. At least you are safe. I hope help is on the way. Hang in there. You have a great attitude. From now on I should stop complaining about trivial inconveniences.

I am happy to hear that your niece is going to/has adopted the kitten Maria.

Central Florida has a very large Puerto Rican population; and many connections.
Our ABC local network affiliate (WFTV) is doing a superior job of facilitating communications; and coordinating relief, in a myriad of ways.
They have been more "pro-active"/effective than most of the "official" efforts we have seen, thus far, IMO.

Thank you for letting us know how you are doing, Jimena. So sorry to hear about all the struggles. I hope conditions will improve soon. I've heard some basic infrastructure improvements are happening - a temporary air control that will help more flights be able to fly in and out of the airport, and some power issues for a hospital. Hopefully once more of the infrastructure is repaired, those organizations can help the people who need their services.

On the local news here in Boston, some charities have raised literally warehouses of items such as water, baby diapers, formula and other much needed items.

The problem? Getting it there. Some of the infrastructure is so badly damaged that it will take time to make enough repairs so that the items can be delivered.

There is talk of trying to get a freighter to deliver the items to Puerto Rico.

ETA: At the brewfest, the Red Cross was there taking donations. They had a five gallon water cooler jug there. It was half full of money by the end of the evening. Maybe it was all the beer I drank but I put a 50 dollar bill in. There were a lot of twenties in there.

Mark Cuban has loaned his team jet to J. J. Barea to bring supplies to Puerto Rico.

"I was really proud of J.J. and how quickly he got involved and how hard he worked to make all of this happen," Cuban told ESPN in a text message.

"That's a situation that he's got to take care of," coach Rick Carlisle said. "Mark gave him our team plane. They loaded up a bunch of stuff, supplies, etc., to take over to Puerto Rico, and they're going to turn around and come back. He's going to take his mom and grandmother back with him, and my understanding is his dad is going to stay over there and slug it out with all of the recovery efforts."

Okay, I'm going to try to make a comprehensive list of links for donation:

It goes without saying any FSU support would be deeply appreciated. Even if it's $5 (I totally understand not having much spare savings, and there's been a lot to support this summer unfortunately). Thanks so much.

It's insane...I found out that a missionary couple with two small kids that I know who lives in PR were affected pretty badly...they were in a friend's house at the time of the storm and the winds blew all the windows and doors out; their baby was nearly sucked out of her mom's arms. :( Their own house was also totally destroyed; they were evacuated out the next day; I guess their mission organization mobilized to get them out quickly. They're lucky though...they got to leave quickly. I don't now what other people are doing who also lost their homes but can't leave.

I just made a small donation to Maria fund. Will try to make more donations in the next few days. Thanks for the links.

Royal Caribbean is helping too

that it will cancel its Adventure of the Seas cruise, which was scheduled to depart from San Juan, Puerto Rico, on Sept. 30 and sail to various islands in the Caribbean, to free up the cruise liner to dock in ports in San Juan and on the U.S. Virgin Islands of St. Thomas and St. Croix to aid in relief efforts.

The ship will bring donated supplies to each port and bring evacuees from the islands to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, ahead of ship’s next scheduled cruise on Oct. 6.

CNN reporters are painting a very bleak and heartbreaking picture and the response so far by the different agencies seems insufficient at best.
