From Russia with Love [#31]: Winter to Spring 2019

This Russian anime is a direct take off on the concept of Bugs Bunny in dynamics of Road Runner (it's a confirmed fact, as well as refs of many russian anime characters to WarBro, HanBar and Disney cartoons)

Bugs Bunny is referred to as "rabbit".
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bugs_Bunny
"Bugs is an anthropomorphic gray and white rabbit who is famous for his flippant, insouciant personality."

The Russian rabbit, is "american Bugs Bunny/Road Runner" running away from "bad wolf". Just like "Bugs" it is a "rabbit".

Yes, I grew up on these films. It was compulsory watching for us. That’s s why I know the wolf is calling the smaller animal zayats, and not krolik. I don’t care about how you explain what it is based on, but not distinguishing between rabbits and hares is a bit like claiming that duck, goose and swan is the same animal.

It is not "my explanation" it's this explanation:
Hares and jackrabbits are leporids belonging to the genus Lepus. Hares are classified in the same family as rabbits.

I had no idea that Eteri and Daniil were so close in their personal lives. Do they have any personal connection aside from being colleagues?
Eteri is good friends with Daniil's mother, Ludmila Shalashova, a former ballerina who helps with balletic themes and choreography at the rink.

... and to cut the "cr..p".... no, Daniil is not with Tutberidze, or Zagitova, or Shcherbakova, or Kostornaya, no matter what nasty composite fotos and videos anti-fans put together lately.. :p (and that's is why Dudakov tries to never hug or touch, or kiss, or be overtly nice to any lady skaters, even when they win or do well... :D). And when Medvedeva last week in that radio interview said "I fell in love (platonically) with an older man" it was not Daniil either.. :p

Daniil is quite happy in his own circle of friends..:D

Not quite true. Sofia has broken 200 internationally this season. It took her a while, but she did it. Stasia hasn't yet.

Oops, I forgot that, my bad! Good for you remembering.

Just adding that the Disney film is very loosely based on the book, The Frog Princess by E.D. Baker (published in 2002). Which is in turn very loosely based on the Grimm fairy tale, The Frog Prince. About the only element of the book that I recall being the same as the film is that both the guy and the girl turn into frogs.

I read The Frog Princess by E.D. Baker a couple years ago! It was very cute. The movie was very different, but both stories are good.

Zagitova is not looking as consistent technically as she did last season. Unfortunately, Zagitova is having problems due to a growth spurt combined with poor technique which is partly the reason for some of her injuries. Plus her pumping cross-overs (ignored by the judges) are ugly and very glaring. The judges have been essentially rewarding Zag for being the reigning ladies Olympic champion. The judges do not seem to like admitting their premature gift-giving mistakes. I never liked Zag's overdone packaging last season which camouflaged her weaknesses. The best to be said is Zag is talented athletically, and a very hard worker. What Eteri's successful skaters have in common are fast rotations and fierce determination. Add in being Russian and they get tremendous bonus points from judges.

In Zag's senior debut season, the point-giving, especially on PCS was way overdone. The same for Medvedeva for two dominating seasons. Albeit Med has some intense passion that I hope can truly grow under Orser & Co into great artistic expression, combined with the necessary proper technique for a more extended career. The jury is still out on where the careers of Zag/Med are heading. Perhaps they both will be able to overcome and persevere. I do hope (particularly in Zag's case this season) that the persevering won't be so much about receiving undue gifts of validation from the judges.

ETA: Russian Nationals is held so close to GPF and the end of the GP season, it's no wonder a number of Russian skaters have to withdraw due to injury and/or illness.

I agree that the judges are very generous with Zagitova's scores. I think they snowballed because she was consistent last year, but now they can't afford to do that, and the scores will eventually start to fall. But for now, she is still getting those huge PCS and the judges are willing to keep scoring her like that, so the Fed can send her this year. If she falls apart by next year, then they can regroup, but she's still getting higher scores while falling than the others get while standing up.

I'm so happy to see Medvedeva tapping into that passion too - she just needs time and I think the switch will prove to be a good idea.

I had no idea that Eteri and Daniil were so close in their personal lives. Do they have any personal connection aside from being colleagues?

Conspiracy theory: Daniil is Eteri's sugar baby.

That is absolutely correct, when the issue is "zoology".

Yet the character "from the Leporidae family", in folk tales and stories (on which cartoons are based) about "clever Rabbit/Hare vs. hungry Fox/Lion/Bear/Wolf" are often called "Rabbit".
"Clever Rabbit" - Hindu and African folk tales https://www.culturalindia.net/indian-folktales/panchatantra-tales/foolish-lion-clever-rabbit.html
"Brer Rabbit" - Uncle Remus Stories - https://i.ytimg.com/vi/HGweyljVRAY/hqdefault.jpg

To argue "hare" vs. "rabbit" translation in regards to this "story line", is about the same as to argue what to call "Red Riding Hood", a "girl" or a "maiden", based on their "puberty level"... and i had those arguments too, believe me..

It would probably hurt you to admit that you were wrong, wouldn’t it? You translated Russian word for hare as rabbit, and when I corrected you, you are trying to explain that the producers meant rabbit even though they were using Russian word for hare? Wouldn’t they use the word for rabbit if they meant rabbit? Well, what if you just translated exactly what they called it, rather than assuming that you know what they intended it to be? Or is your knowledge of animals so bad that as long as it looks similar, it must be the same? Tiger is for you just cat, and wolf is dog, and hare is rabbit...

I love it when people fix my language, it's learning.

In your case, you're mixing "zoology" issues with "Character description" in a cartoon title in another language. Using the word "Rabbit" in this context, given how many tales and cartoons already have the term "Rabbit", is better and easier for others to relate to.
Bugs Bunny is a RABBIT
Brer Rabbit is a RABBIT
Clever Rabbit is a RABBIT
... and Ну Погоди! cartoon has the same story lines and essence as the above, so the word "Rabbit" is just right.

The world known italian story is called "Pinoccio". The russian slightly changed version is called "Buratino". Both boys are out of wood, and have long noses when they tell a lie. If i am going to use the story as a ref. to something, outside of Russia i will call the boy "Pinoccio" so every one would understand. It's the meaning that counts, in such case...

:) What's the issue, actually? Tinami Amori has a picture on which anyone can see, that hare is a mouse.

:D you got to read more carefully.... that link is given as a demonstration that many russian cartoon characters are borrowed from american earlier cartoons.... :p

Since it is or almost New Year.. let's see what this cross-dressing, gender-identity confused Big Bad Wolf should be called in English.... :inavoid:

I don't think that she is his type. :shuffle:
oh.. don't tear off Med's beard and destroy the remaining crumbs of her cult of personality... she has already been debunked as "false russia's true patriot", "false Eteri's 2nd daughter" and "false Alina's best friend".. :D

Daniil really likes this kind of ''attention'' and rumours... Otherwise I cannot imagine why he would say on the National Channel 1 that Alina Zagitova is his creative muse:confused::cool:.

I love Ну, Погоди! I first saw it as an adult though:) And the zayts is the hare, and the krolik is the rabbit, they're not the same, not in the animal world, and not in Russian, not in Norwegian, not in English, not in German. So it's not Minerva Fabienne Kaninchen or Sean Hare;) (Yes, I know he's spelling differently:) )

I love Ну, Погоди! too, but unfortunately Russian films and literature was forced down our throat quite forcibly, and after a while we all became quite proficient in avoiding all those pearls. Before I learned, I went through the compulsory Timur i yevo kamanda, and Vaska Trubatchov...

I saw it was a promo for a video or something

I know you hate to hear it, but Medvedeva's cult personality as you call is just fine. You really hate her with a passion. Weird.

Based on some of her other posts, this poster must be middle aged at least, and spends this much time trashing a teenager on the internet? And criticizes athletes who don't retire when she thinks they should (around 20 yo max) instead of doing other, more productive things with their time...
