FIFA World Cup 2018

Wow, I just got back from a full day of work and didn't see the results until now. Adding my sympathies to Oleada but congrats to Sharpie, Lorac, and any other England supporters I'm missing. I'm happy about Sweden because Switzerland has crap sportsmanship and isn't a very interesting team any way, but there sure are pretty weak teams left in the bottom half of the draw. It's so unfortunate that even some round of 16 losers have to go home when the likes of Sweden or Russia can get into the semis.

Just wanted to say congrats to England! You guys know how to give an old lady’s heart a workout!

Prince William apparently makes his first ever tweet - congratulating England:

So was he sitting there with Harry in his front room watching those penalties through his fingers like I did I wonder :D

Nipped out to get some lunch and heard the local florist tell her customer that they would be shutting at 2pm on Saturday as they wanted to get to the pub to watch the game. The pubs must be so happy England are progressing as their takings will be up!!

ETA: Though looking at all the front pages of the British newspapers - and I do mean all - you'd have thunk we'd won the entire things already instead of a round of 16 knockout game - but there again it was on those damn penalties :biggrinbo.I think this from the BBC says is all:

"Home" meaning Uruguay, where it all started, or Brazil, where it ends up more often than anywhere else?:saint:
I think you'll find football did not originate in either Uruguay or Brazil. The sport originated in England and once we win the World Cup this year, football is coming home. :rollin:
Ah well 52 years of hurt never stops you dreaming does it? :saint:
Clearly not! :encore:

This BBC article gives details of the origin of the phrase 'it's coming home' in reference to England and goes all the way back to the 1996 European Championships that were held in England.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-44711564

A quotes from the article:

The song was written for Euro 96 by comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner with the band the Lightning Seeds.

Although "it's coming home" originally referred to the fact that England was hosting its first major tournament since the 1966 World Cup, it's now got a broader meaning - basically that England will win it.

I did chuckle yesterday as I read the US tennis player Madison Keyes watched the England Colombia game with an injured Laura Robson who apparently sang the chorus all the way through the match to the effect that Madison ended up singing it and cheering like mad for England at the end. Apparently Gael Monfils was just leaving a restaurant in London when he saw on his phone the shoot out was on and nipped into a pub to witness it and he said he was cheering like mad at the end as well. :D:lol:

Thank dawg the football is back today, I’ve been quite bereft the last 2 days!

I enjoy the tennis so that has helped get me through. In fact I currently have the tennis on the TV and phone and footie on the laptop.

France 1 up - but fab save by the French goalie at the end of the half to ensure it stays 1-0 to France. It's got a long way to go this game!!

As a small country inhabitant, I am for Uruguay. Nothing against FRA, just my preference.

If Uruguay get one back in the next few minutes the last 10 minutes will be intense - but they have to get a goal soon.

Stuck on a train so listening to an audio stream. Looking good for France, congrats! Though sorry the Latin American representation has been cut.

I would love Belgium to beat Brazil. Hopefully they get a better start than against Japan as going 2-0 down to Brazil would be hard to come back from!!

Brazil throwing everything but the kitchen sink at Belgium - and they get one back!!!!!

The next 15 minutes are going to be intense!!!!!!!!!!!!
