DWTS Season 22 3-21-2016

Mischa was also the only celebrity not in the opening. They just flashed to a photo of her. I got the vibe from her that her publicist is making her do this to become relevant again.

I love snarky Len and I'm glad that he's back, but I do wonder if Mischa is emotionally strong enough to handle this experience.

I think that her main issue is that (as was said by several last night) she isn't a "natural dancer" -- i.e. that she doesn't seem to have much of a relation to the music or to her own body movement. I know that they heavily edit the bumper "packages" but she seemed rather awkward and uncoordinated in the rehearsal clips. If this is the case, I would be "terrified" too.

The first statement she made during her package was that "I've danced a lot in my life."

My guess is that she initially had an inflated sense of her dancing "talent" and is now realizing she's way out of her league.

She really appears to not want to be there. I can't decide if I want her or Geraldo to go home first.

Poor Doug- he really can't move...

My two favorite were Nyle and Wanya. Loved them both. Jodie was good (but her facial expression really bothered me.) Kim Fields and Marla Maples were nice surprises- both in personality and dancing ability. I think it's going to be a good season!!

Who appears like they don't/didn't want to be there more?

Mischa Barton, week 1
vs.
Hope Solo, (circa) week 8

In Nyle and Peta's rehearsal, they mentioned and showed Peta doing things like tapping Nyle on the back when it was time to do a different move. I didn't notice that happening during their number for I was distracted by the phenomenal dancing! I wonder if she does something more subtle than a tap on the back, like how and when she squeezes his hand or shoulder to communicate a change in movement. Or if Nyle just perfectly memorized each and every step until it was simply all done from memory. I wonder how many of his competitors are going to take what they are doing WAY more seriously to have somebody who can't hear ANYTHING...just kick their a**!! :respec:
I read that Peta has other subtle things too, like twisting a certain way when his hands are on her hips. And she is intentionally being subtle with her communication so that it isn't noticeable. And like Nyle said, he just watches Peta and knows when to move. Nyle got all of my votes last night.

Regarding Mischa, to me she has always seemed to have a bit of an attitude of expecting to be praised but not putting forward effort or thanks for what she's given. I don't know her, but I've had that perception since the OC days. It also irked me that she wasn't in the opening. Hopefully it was a scheduling issue and ot an attitude issue. Poor Artem!

I'm happy that Keo is finally going to last a bit longer than usual, but I think he needs to give Jodie some better choreography. I mean, just thinking of what Derek or Val would have given her, and how they would have pushed her skills, she would have come out much stronger.

I had a feeling Geraldo would be bad, even though he looks quite fit for a 72 year old. Then he said in a radio interview yesterday that he cannot feel his right foot at all due to back surgery, so I knew he would be bad. So sad for Edyta to return from a long hiatus, only to be the first eliminated.

And man, Len was extra nasty!

Eh, I have seen speculation he'll stay longer than Mischa as does she even have a fan base any more, plus her being 'meh' at best could be the kiss of death. He at least seemed to know yeah, he's the old guy, and he didn't seem upset about it. She just...it was uncomfortable.

I was surprised by the girl who fights...Paige? Such a nice upper body position and control. With Jodie I could see Keo constantly having to hold her center still and try and keep her near him.

Before they went to commercial, Tom was introducing Mischa/Artem as the next dancers after the break. She CLEARLY didn't realized they were on camera as she had the bitchiest look on her face and looked totally NOT into being there. As soon as she realized they were on camera, she smiled and tried to look all happy. It definitely appears that she has an attitude problem. I agree- poor Artem.

Hope Solo is a good comparison to whomever stated that upthread...

Who appears like they don't/didn't want to be there more?

Mischa Barton, week 1
vs.
Hope Solo, (circa) week 8

Hope Solo's unhappiness built week after week. She certainly didn't come out this miserable on week one. Also, I'll bet Artem is vastly more patient than Maks. So Mischa wins the beeatch sweepstakes. She had an attitude and displeasure at the cast announce. Also, she dressed like she was at a funeral. This is clearly a job done for the money, and I guess the opening guarantee paid her mortgage because she clearly doesn't care if she lasts past the first elimination.

I haven't watched it yet and probably won't until this weekend. But boy am I glad I am reading this thread! Lots of diva, drama, bitchy, things to watch for that I would have missed if I was watching live!

Mischa had a car repossessed last fall, and again last month. So her money issues are quite real. You can't live in LA without a car!

Her next stop after DWTS should probably Iyanla Vanzant's show or the Starting Over house.

Mischa...clearly doesn't care if she lasts past the first elimination.

If that were true, Mischa wouldn't have looked like she was about to burst into tears because of Len's comments. Tom tried to distract her with her words as Len finished speaking and then Bruno, also noticed Mischa about to burst out crying, was very gentle with his critique. I think Mischa is like Kristen Stewart. Not a girly girl and not at all interested in being overly sweet to make others feel comfortable. She has a coolness to her, like Stewart, that I think people misinterpret. I think that's what is happening in this thread and whichever bully started this has their mob running in quickly to back her/him up.

I think Mischa is the worst sort of personality type for this show. She's introverted, she's not bubbly and cheerful and she seems nervous and insecure. Fatal combination on DWTS. Her team probably made her do the show for the money and exposure and she seems overwhelmed by it all, but agree that the fact that she almost burst into tears during Len's critique shows that she does care about her performances. Her dance was not good, but IMO you saw that she tried to commit to it. I thought her scores were about right, but the tone of Len was not necessary. Of course, they might have done it on purpose to rile up some sympathy for her and get her votes that way to get her into the next week and until she perhaps improves a bit. I wouldn't put it past the producers. Also, it made good drama and talking points. That it might be upsetting for the contestants doesn't bother anyone there.

They did pretty much the same thing with Alexa last season when they tried to rally votes for her: The judges were needlessly mean about a perfectly fine dance (they gave her a difficult assignment on purpose so there was no way she would be brilliant at it, and had her dance with a snake!) and gave her low scores for it, then put her in jeopardy. So of course she was distraught by how terrible her evening had been and started sobbing at the end of the show. It did bring her sympathy and votes and she survived for a few more weeks on what I suspect was very little own fanbase and her own strong dancing. But the way they messed with her head that week to get their desired result was tough to watch and showed the ugly side of reality shows like that.

I always watch a bit behind so I can fast forward through Carrie Ann, Bruno, and the commercials. I will have Misha on ignore going forward. Team Nyle all the way.

The first statement she made during her package was that "I've danced a lot in my life." My guess is that she initially had an inflated sense of her dancing "talent" and is now realizing she's way out of her league.
I told a friend that I might have misheard that statement and that she had actually said the reverse -- that she hadn't danced a lot -- but that if she said that she had danced a lot, then it must have been dancing in clubs, etc. and not anything like ballroom or even dance lessons as a child. I think the reality of what DWTS training/performance entailed was a very big shock to her.
She really appears to not want to be there. I can't decide if I want her or Geraldo to go home first. Poor Doug- he really can't move.
I'm with whoever said up thread that her introverted personality isn't well suited to a show like DWTS, as seems to be borne out by all the posts proclaiming her to be a bitch supreme. I feel more than a bit sorry for her. But I definitely want Geraldo to go home first. Doug can't dance, but at least he was moving across the floor, unlike Geraldo.
Kim Fields and Marla Maples were nice surprises- both in personality and dancing ability. I think it's going to be a good season!!
I agree on all of these counts.

I like the fact that I know close to none of these people (Geraldo and Marla were the only ones I'd heard of). All the football guys are fun! I particularly enjoyed Wayna; I hope he lasts a while. And while we're diving into the new personalities, let's remember who we don't have this season: any Hough, Osmond, Kardashian or Osborne. I'm happy that we don't have the usual "types" that they push: hero, religious person, bimbette, etc. These seem to be more interesting individuals at this point.

But the way they messed with her head that week to get their desired result was tough to watch and showed the ugly side of reality shows like that.
I find it interesting that people fully see producer manipulation but don't consider contestant manipulation. Or is it just that you think Misha isn't that good of an actress? :D

Mischa had a car repossessed last fall, and again last month. So her money issues are quite real. You can't live in LA without a car!

She might trying getting a less expensive car.

As for the comparison to Kristen Stewart, while she can be surly, Stewart has some real talent. She not only was part in a huge movie blockbuster series, which garnered her a lot more $$$ than Barton got on the OC, she also has real acting chops. She's been in some smaller films where she actually had to act.

Barton is a bitter former teen/early 20s actress who doesn't have the chops to grow with time. She might try to not be so surly and bitter about a really solid opportunity that's come her way.

Kristen Stewart also had the media constantly in her face, which can lead to a bit of attitude. Mischa has been almost completely out of the public eye for about 10 years now, so doesn't have any of the same excuses as Kristen. Kristen also acknowledges how she is perceived and addresses that, and doesn't come off as expecting adoration, praise and accolades. That's not how I see Mischa (again, I don't know her - she may be the most lovely person ever, it's just how she comes across).

Regarding Artem vs Maks' patience, didn't Meryl say during her switch-up week how Maks is very patient and lighthearted during rehearsals?

On a different note, thinking of the switch up, I wonder how that's going to work with Nyle if they do it this year? He and Peta had a few weeks before the premiere to work on things that work for them. He won't have that with only one week with a new partner? It'll also make any group dances a bit more difficult, especially if someone other than Peta takes lead (like how Derek always took lead in choreographing them).

And finally, no Houghs this year, but also, finally, NO ALLISON!!! I'd personally rather have 37 Houghs than Allison, though her hubby is super adorable on Ellen.

By the time of the switch, Nyle will know what works and should have a lot of the basic steps committed to memory. Having seen how resourceful he was on ANTM, I would expect him to be able to do more than muddle through.

Woah. I hadn't even thought about her! What does that say? I do like Twitch on Ellen but Allison definitely got overexposed last season.

I only saw a video of Mischa's dance that did not include the judging. It wasn't as bad as I was expecting based on the comments here. She looked stiff like a lot of contestants do the first week, but it was an ok dance.

This isn't DWTS, but did you see the tango that Obama and the First Lady got forced into in Cuba? Awkward! They should have focused on Michelle instead.

They were in Argentina, not Cuba. I suppose the Obamas could have danced a retro mambo or cha-cha in Cuba, but I doubt if dancing fit into their schedule while there.

I've never watched that show. But would love for you to share about what things he did to bring about his win. :respec:

The Daily Show did a report on the President and First Lady being in Cuba. Perhaps they have visited both places recently?
