Detroit selected to host 2019 U.S. Figure Skating Championships

Still no Cleveland, but at least it's close... But no tunnel, which would make traveling there so much faster by vehicle.

I called the Detroit Sports Commission today. Tickets are now projected to go on sale around the first two weeks of March. The official hotel will be announced when tickets go on sale.

While personally I think it's great that they aren't demanding money years in advance, this does bring into question their "official" reason for not being at Nationals this year. Maybe they weren't concerned about the fans missing skating to buy tickets, because it appears they were not really ready to sell :)

Whether they were ready to sell or not, they could have had a booth, or had materials at the USFS booth, with basic info on dates, venues, the city, hotels, prices, when tix were going on sale ("early March" would have been fine). Their audience was right there. It could be that they weren't very organized at that point but the event was awarded several months ago, plus they bid on 2018, so it would seem like the groundwork was there. I wonder if it was a conscious decision by USFS to say, we want people to focus on the Olys, we'll hold off until afterward....but really, what skating fans aren't going to be excited for the Olys, whether or not they read a brochure about next year's Nats? I think there's enough excitement to go around.

Any word on tickets?

Nevermind I just saw the post about the first two weeks of March.

USFS does not control ticket sales, the LOC does, and well they should considering the guaranteed payments that USFS demands.

The LOC handles the pricing and logistics of ticket sales, but they take direction from USFS, in terms of timing, seats blocked off, etc. If USFS wanted them to hold off until after the Olys (and we don't know, I was just wondering), they would comply.

They may choose to comply, but discretion about when to sell tickets belongs to the LOC.

It's pouring down rain here so to amuse myself I called the Detroit Sports Commission (they said the first of March tickets would go on sale and it is March 1st:D. So they still don't have a date for the sale but told me to call back around March 19. And no official hotel yet.

I suspect tickets may be a tough sell, with so many skaters retiring after this season. The next gen is exciting, but potential ticket buyers may not want to spend typical prices to see them just yet. I hope they set the prices more in Greensboro range than San Jose range. And that would also make it easier for local skaters and their families to attend.

*sigh* And no news about Anaheim 4CC either. It's not like some of us are trying to plan a trip halfway around the world for this or anything. Heck, I don't think we even have a venue for Anaheim yet.

*settles in to wait*

There's no ticket or hotel information for Skate America yet either, so I wouldn't hold my breath on 4CC information since that's later in the game. You know how USFS is incapable of multitasking lol.

Well if they did, that goes in the "stupid marketing move of the year" nominee list. Detroit has missed the two times in the 12 months prior to their event when there's a lot of 'Hype' and attention around the skating. Get your customers while they are excited about your product!

*groans* Maybe I'm just too organised. :COP:

I wonder if they're waiting to gauge the post Olympic bump to decide how to price the tickets.

Skate America is so darn cheap. Portland was right after Vancouver, when Davis/White were top dog. Weren't tickets something like $8?

They are expecting a bump from two bronze medals? (Yes I know one was a team medal but it counts as one on the tally sheet) Really? That might not have been a good idea if that was the plan

shut up! That’s like stupid cheap! Lake placid was like $35 for mid range seats iirc

Well, there's a Citizens Bank Arena in Ontario. I feel certain USFS could make that "Anaheim".

They would outright just name Ontario, Ca like that did with Skate America that one year. The Ontario airport is right by the CBB arena and you would fly into a different airport if it was in Anaheim. Anaheim is at least an hour away, especially with California traffic. Since they are specifically naming Anaheim not LA, I would say it's a pretty sure thing it's the Honda Center. Besides, the Skate America they did in Ontario was a disaster attendance wise.

Whee, look what I found (linked on the USFS website, while I was looking for something else): http://2019uschampionships.com

No date about ticket sales, just says "March 2018". But you can sign up to receive e-mail updates.

The good news is that the main arena will apparently host all Junior and Senior events, including all practices and the Junior SPs, which I think were originally supposed to be at the secondary rink. There is a tentative schedule on the Schedule page, under Event Details.

Same sched for Senior events as the years prior to this year - pairs and dance FS/FD split into two parts on Saturday, men on Sunday.

And I like how the ice dancers are prominently featured in the site's photos. :)
