Chinese skating news & social media updates pt. 5, 2023 onwards

Why is it about mathematics. It's physics. Pairs men are not lifting point-size objects, and they're not lifting rigid bodies, so it makes perfect sense they'd need to possess the ability to lift far greater weights than their partners' weights on ground.

If someone believes Li can lift Sui Wenjing while skating with any speed, let alone lift her, throw her, and do a bunch of other pairs moves, then more power to that person.

Well, I don't think it's unreasonable to think that some of the China-based skaters in singles & ice dance could be sent to Denis Ten Memorial. It's a heck of a lot closer to fly to Astana than anywhere in Europe.
Jin is in Toronto training with Orser.

And obviously someone thinks lifting women in pairs and ice dance is the same thing…
What is being said is that there’s no way in hell Han bench presses 265 pounds. No way. And you suggested he would have to lift even more than that. 😂

Anyone with any familiarity in the gym is probably laughing quite a bit at the thought of this— for pretty much all figure skaters. Let alone the one who is 135 pounds.

Which is whence the caveperson stereotype comes into picture I imagine. 😇

But some of us grunt a bit less and can also see Yuma Kagiyama's perfect, +5 quality jumps include a flat edge lutz. And can read other replies.

Can you have Physics without Mathematics???????

Yes, whenever my teachers asked me a question about blackholes, I just said "1+1=2". It just makes perfect sense.

Sorry that someone responded to "I’m not sure what a 90kg bench press (which is quite a lot for figure skaters— and in general) is going to show, seeing how the women he’s lifting are not 200 pounds." with a direct quote from an Olympic gold medalist pairs man and also answers that include how weight when we're talking about people and movement can be radically different.

I'm sure the grunting neanderthals of one's local gym know better, with their lifelong achievements of figuring out the best protein shakes, the best lighting for selfies to make it look like they've accomplished something with their day, and making stupid comments about figure skating on forums while telling themselves no one likes them because their bs resides on such a high plane of logical thinking that it's extremely hard to rebut.

So we are still going with Han bench pressing 265 pounds— or better yet— more? Okay then.

Yes, because everyone concerned with fitness is so stupid.

Wow, it just matters so much to me what an insider who for more than a decade maintained the delusional belief that a lip and lutz are the same jump, and that a flutz and flip are the same jump thinks. Truly, it was so logical to advocate that the CoP should call the flutz as a flip instead. It 100% wouldn't have caused people to just learn a lip and flutz to begin, to get full credit on their scoresheets.

I wish I could pay thousands of dollars to go watch skating around these geniuses. Clearly, others do too.

Zhang/Huang third after the SP.

Neither commentator remembers Huang, but they're rightly noting the good technique the pair has on multiple elements, as well as the good choreography. Girl looks miserable next to him, though.

(Have to disagree that Shen/Zhao had fundamental skating skills "embedded" into their skating, although they improved significantly, but not the point)

And Zhang/Huang have gone and won. I know he's unpopular among Chinese fans, and also there's criticism about the age rule change, but good to see, and they really are a good team.

Well, as long as she's not miserable, anyway...
Technically they're a good enough team, but they have a lot to work on to be an interesting team choreographically & artistically.

I mean, it's a junior team. They're not as good "artistically" as Sui/Han and Yu/Jin were in juniors, but who really was. I don't see them as being behind the other currently competing junior pairs.

Can't wait for the REAL junior babies (Zhang/Feng) to make their debut next week
I can see you S/H onlys will be happy with them

They do have great artistic potential, that's for sure.

^^Their short was better from the finals imo 😂 Free was kinda messy.

Zhang/Feng has better pair vibes than Zhang/Huang (or Huang with any human being for that matter). I maintain that Huang won't be a successful pairs guy in the long run until he learns how to treat his partner decently.

Feng carries himself well for his age, that's for sure. Zhang's a bit on the younger side and it shows in her skating, but very expressive.

I think they'll show up at Shanghai Trophy, if it's happening. It'll likely be Jin, Peng/Wang, An, and whoever the top ranked senior ID team is supposed to be (and maybe the rank 2s for each field).

A pity that it doesn't count for tech mins, AFAIK, which An and the top ranked ID team will lack. Fingers crossed you're right, but I doubt it, and the fed can pretend it gave an opportunity to its skaters by inviting them to this fluff event, while expending minimum travel/lodging costs.
The Announcement is not out yet, so I don't know the specifics for this year. But if they get the number of foreign skaters right and invite enough international officials, it should count. The Shanghai Trophy 2023 scores count towards minimum TES (on ISU official Combined Total Elements Scores lists, they are currently used for Tennell, Petrokina, Wang/Liu and Zhang/Yang)

Let's see if it even happens, although many people both on twitter and weibo seem convinced it is.

If it counts for TES mins, I guess the CFed can cheap out with even less criticism than otherwise could be made towards it.

There is also Asian Open Trophy to be held in Hong Kong next week. It counts for minimum TES too (there are enough entries from different ISU members)

Chinese skaters in the entry list are

Senior Men
Daiwei Dai

Senior Women
Xiangyi An
Jiaying Cheng

Junior Men
Yihe Sun

Junior Women
Wandi Xu
Ruiyang Zhang

I think he has strong basics and great jumps. I don't like his programs at all, and think he can learn how to perform better. I like him much more than Yudong, though.

No one from China was listed on the Shanghai Trophy announcement, yet. I would guess Jin and <random ID team> and An will be there, anyway.
