I gather that Sui/Han withdrew before the FS? If so, did they or their coaches cite a reason? They seemed ok in the SP.

They said they've only been practicing (mostly) individual elements for 2 weeks and their side-by-side double toe loops were planned because they haven't had the time to train the 3T with the music yet.

That's quite the assumption and a quite xenophobic of you, you should be better than this. Her mother posted her birthday online long time ago and posted her cake and party from her 12th party at the rink right before she came to Harbin for Nationals. It has been known for years (probably since like 2015 when she was selected for the gala at CoC) that she would be too young for 2022. The Chinese federation doesn't manage her either because her parents rejected her joining a long time ago.

Considering past actions of the Chinese when it comes to “aging”athletes to meet their desire for medals I think it is a valid concern.

I think applying it to every Chinese athlete who comes along is very assumptive and quite rude and Chinese athletes who's ages and abilities have been questioned (when there have never been anything to say otherwise) have admitted to feeling pressured and hurt by the comments up to the point where they have admitted to depression and burning out (see Shan Chunsong). These kind of comments are unfair to the athletes as people. It is up to the ISU and the official sporting bodies to determine what is fake and what is not, make a complaint to them if you really think it's such a concern. Her age and birthday is displayed online, December 24, 2006, so the comment was completely unnecessary on her part.

I am so glad to see Sui & Han back on the ice, as musical as ever. Am also glad to hear that the rumors of a split between Yu & Zhang were false. (Or very premature). As were the early season rumors of one between Wang & Liu. It seems Boyang is once again looking stronger as the season develops. And all of this is good news. I have enjoyed watching Peng & Jin this season, but it has been a rebuilding year for China. Hope to see all of these athletes at 4CCs. Fingers crossed for Wang & Wang to get a shot at an international, and best wishes to Ning & Wang in their quest to earn 4CC minimums at Mentor Torun Cup.
 
The stream this year really showed the increased interest in domestic fans for figure skating, the viewers at first were only 2000-4000 but then on the second day was pretty steady at 10,000+ watching at any time. I believed it got to around 20,000 for Boyang and the top pairs. Very optimistic for the future, hopefully they will continue to provide the stream as a way for figure skating to be exposed to more remote places in China like Skate Canada does with their streams.

Boyang has been feeling a lot better mentally, he said he is making adjustments in expectations for himself in order to perform better. His results at the Olympics were better than he expected and his practices have not been bad, but then he gets to competitions and feels all the pressure due to expectations he has for himself. You are right. It is totally an assumption on my part based on the past performance of the Chinese Fed. I do apologize as I have never heard of her before. She would seem to have wise parents.
 
Have they announced the teams yet? Some Youtube comment was saying they were prioritising Yu/Zhang over Peng/Jin for Worlds (as only 2 spots this year), which makes me :mad: if true.

That's odd, I saw others saying that Yu & Zhang aren't even being considered for international events?
 
And I've read comments assuming that P&J will go over Y&Z, which are maybe premature? (If there is one thing we should have learned from following the gossip about the Chinese Skating Federation over the past several years, it is that a great deal of the information that gets posted as "fact" is uninformed and inaccurate).

At this point, Yu & Zhang and Sui & Han are still in rebuilding mode. Hopefully, three teams will be healthy enough go to 4CCs, and we--as well as the Chinese Fed--will see which teams are the most competitive heading into Worlds. It's a shame there are only the two berths, but at least it's a good season for rebuilding.

With Peng & Jin, the issue is always that they don't really have a second triple jump for the FS. If Yu & Zhang could recover enough, they could have a higher potential score and a better shot of earning that third spot back. But it seems quite possible that Y&Z aren't going to be ready for that. Or that maybe with the new scoring system combined with retirments, P&J can help earn that third placement for next year. Their placement at the GPF is a great argument in their favor, and of course, their programs are in good shape. Does China usually announce their World team this early? We may have to wait and see.
 
I'd hope that 4CCs will act as a skate-off for Worlds, so in that case, nothing would be decided yet. I was thrown by a comment saying Y/Z had already been selected ahead of P/J, but that does sound unlikely. I hope.

Yan Han is coming back next season according to Jian Tong, he has recovered quite well and is jumping the 3A again. In 2019 he will go to USA to get a new SP/FS (finally no Lori!) and he will start with some domestic competitions next season. Source

Thank-you for the news on Yan Han. He is one of my favorites male skaters and I was sad to not see him skate. Here is hoping he continues to get strong and get back his skills. Pls let us know who will be doing his new programs when it is ok to release it.
 
Perhaps P&J and Y&Z can battle it out at 4CCs?

Christy Leung had previously competed at Chinese Winter Games (as a HK skater). She had hopped out of her 3loop but was otherwise clean on the other elements (I don't have the procotol so not sure about calling).

According to this article (https://news.sina.com.tw/article/20181230/29485176.html), the temperature in Harbin bothered her, and she couldn't find her feel for jumps and had to take a few days to accustom. She was born in HK but trained in BJ for 4 years before going to Tammy (interestingly she is also attending highschool in HK?!). She said she has tried quads but hasn't succeeded yet.

Since Yu/Zhang have not competed their FS yet (and their SP at Nationals was just a test skate) they are well behind in their season prep. compared to Peng/Jin. Let's first see if Y/Z show up at 4CC.
 
@Sylvia I noticed Christy Leung competed at Chinese nationals but represents Hong Kong internationally (and apparently at the National Championships). Ignoring all the China vs. Hong Kong political stuff is it possible she is considering switching to represent China internationally or that China will try to have Hong Kong's figure skating association combine with their own for 2022?
 
@Willin, I have no idea what will happen in the future but as long as the Hong Kong Skating Union is recognized as an ISU member federation (and ditto the the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China), I assume Yi Christy Leung will continue to represent Hong Kong as long as she and her family can afford all the skating expenses involved.
