Auburn gymnast dislocates both knees in horrific accident in her final meet. (graphic video)

Best wishes to her for a speedy recovery!
Her surgery went very, very well. So, that is something.

Auburn senior Samantha Cerio's surgery took place Monday and lasted more than two hours but was "an extreme success," according to Tigers gymnastics coach Jeff Graba. Graba had previously announced that Dr. James Andrews would perform the procedure.
"We know the road for full healing is going to be a long and difficult one, but we are confident that she’ll be able to make a complete recovery," Graba wrote on Twitter on Tuesday morning.

Great that the surgery went well! I will not ever understand how something done every day with no problem one day leads to catastrophic injury!

It just does. For what she was doing I suspect a millisecond too slow or to fast..a slight tilt...it looked so awful.

I was watching it live (will not watch the replay), and the commentators remarked that it looked like her feet touched the ground sooner than she expected. She also (if I remember correctly) landed just short or on the edge of the extra mat. That may have added to it. I think her timing was just off, or her steps.

I bet many catastrophic moves take place in training however, probably often mitigated by extra mats, pits or spotting. I'm always surprised it doesn't happen more often, to be honest. They really are well-trained because the margin for error is so small.

Thanks for explaining. There is no way I'm going to watch that video, nor any video when an athlete's limb too obviously end up in a "wrong" position, but I was wondering how it happened. So I guess she didn't absorb the landing at all.

I was at an elite meet once and a gymnast missed her Jaeger. Her legs hit the bar and she fell on her neck. It was a long time ago, so I can't remember if she left on a stretcher, I don't recall seeing one, but it took some time before she got up and my heart stopped beating. As bad as Cerio's injury is, thankfully she couldn't get paralyzed. I'm happy that the news are good and hopefully she will be fine for the rest of her life.

Sam has posted on twitter asking people to stop reposting the video. I am on my ipad, so I can’t post the link.

Well, it is a little late about the re-posting. I watched it, never realizing how horrific it was.
Vowed to never watch THAT again.
But now, the picture of her lying on the mat, and one horrid one of her being taken out are everywhere. Just the picture.

I don't know what the answer to re-posting is.......and this is just gratuitous. What a nightmare for her.
