2026 European Championships - Rhythm Dance - "No Steps Please, We're Shittish"

I am only about half way through the RDs and if I have to hear Ricky Martin one more time, I may have to stab my eardrums with a fork! :P
The atmosphere in the arena was definitely getting a bit weird and hysterical by the fifth or sixth Ricky.

Honestly, the whole RD vibe was kind of off... I think it was the constant Rickys, plus the very definitely muted reception to FB/C that was cut only by small enclaves of fanatical elderly women who seem to see Guillaume as their most precious grandson (one was, unprompted, showing me photos of him from a decade ago that she had on her phone)

Does "music of the 90ies" mean that it has to be typical of the decade or could it be any music that was published back then?
Could you, for instance, skate to the score of the Dracula movie of 1992: Love song for a vampire by Annie Lennox? (Ignoring the technical difficulty to make this ice-danceable).
It has to be at least 120 bpm. That cuts out a lot of good 90s music, unfortunately.

Ew.

Good Lord, I am Ricky Martin’ed out I am currently up to Juulia and my husband, why did so many European teams gravitate towards Ricky? Was it required? They need to get rid of themes because there could be 10 million songs to choose from and ice dancers will all gravitate towards the same one or two singers.

Are there no Virgo ice dancers? Virgos would not settle for this. They would change their music as soon as they see someone else doing it.

So I was expecting to be more impressed by FB/C's rhythm dance in person, but honestly, no. They never build up any speed, the twizzles were also pretty slow and didn't cover much ice. It's just posing. Nice posing, but posing.

I had that same thought while watching—that FB/C actually looked a bit slow. Their speed really didn’t stand out much from other teams in their group.

Also felt like Charlene/Marco looked a bit slower than their usual, and not as smooth. Still good of course, but a bit scrappy.

Lots of great teams, but I especially liked L/B, F/G, R/A, the Taschlers. Of the lower-ranked teams, my favorites were Matthaei/Liebers and Reitan/Majorov.

Ugh I'm already getting a bit emotional that for some of these teams it's gonna be their last Euros. And in ice dance careers are long so it feels extra hard because many of them have been around for a decade or even longer.
Yes! And then you realize that you have been watching these age 30+ skaters since they were teenagers and that makes you feel old and that's the life cycle of ice dance.

It was very nice of Europeans to schedule their competition when my work load for school is unusually slow, there's no club events coming up, and my Starbucks is closing early every night for maintenance updates.

Hear me out: Nikolai Majorov and Caroline Parsons, skating for Sweden.

I'm almost positive I had a very similar outfit to Carolane's. I was in fourth or fifth grade. I feel like I have a lot of the same problem with this RD as I have with G/F--it's authentic but in the worst way possible. There's something very AI/uncanny valley about their whole look.

OMG. M/R of Italy are MY NEW FAVORITES. Why because admit it, when the theme is announced, y'all all go out and think of a song and choreograph it. Desert Rose was MINE. Now, mine was different and vastly superior, but this was acceptable.

B/H are not my favorite skaters, and I don't care for this RD generally. BUT. While it's true there's usually some home cookin', it's equally true that a home crowd brings out the best in skaters and often they deserve their new PB/SB. I doubt I'll ever like this program again, but I really enjoyed it TONIGHT. They looked like a different team.

Taschlers Taschlering in the best way possible. Still don't love this program but I love the way they skated it. They're very clearly into being here and the crowd. It's good to see Natalie looking happy and healthy.

Funn Finns! I really don't care about silly things like falls and levels. Yuka is adorable and I care not for rules.

I have gone to the dark side, but this is top three favorite RDs this season. Yes, I'm a hypocritical hater. Gleb looks so good. I love that it's a 90s look, not an exact copy. Inspired by, not derivative of. I have also embraced R/A. R/A don't do much, but what they do, they do it well. I really didn't like this RD at the beginning, but it's grown on me. I like that it's clear and coherent. Although it should go behind the Georgians.

L/B were hosed. Cool concept AND excellent skaters, yes, let's UNDERmark it. Who do we sacrifice to bring justice to this travesty? I'm OK with anyone except Z/K. I'd prefer it also not be Piper and Paul, but if we must, we must.

I have also gone to the darkest of the dark side but I am really liking F/G this season. If this medals, 🤷‍♀️ . I have accepted reality. F/G play the COP game beautifully. They always show up polished and ready. They are never boring. I'd prefer them behind the French, but you know. Chris is taking bias to levels of delusion. Not even Scott Hamilton would have been that nationalistic.

In a perfect world, would the Italians be the front runners, yes. But in a perfect world, the Italians would also have decent programs. Not to bring North Americans up too much into Euros, but I think a lot of the success of IAM, Canton, Hackensack, etc. is because they actively seek out and listen to feedback. Costume not working? Change it. Don't like this lift? Gone. Current program not working? Scrap it. This program to me is reminiscent of a younger team trying to figure out what works by copying teams they admire. I feel like Gui/Fab never found their style, and that score, and I can't believe I'm saying this is...generous.

Not saying they shouldn't be in first, and I think the FD is a whole different animal, but yeah. Hana Aboian still does it better.
:p
This. I am shocked by the people who say Cizeron/FB was amazing and Fear and Gibson slow and tentative.
This is not what I saw in the arena today.

Cizeron still is a standout skater but as a team it was just slow and boring.
I actually thought several other teams were more impressive.

I'm :annoyed Cizeron beat Fear and Gibson on PCS. Cizeron alone does not a team make and Fear and Gibson were on fire. I would love it if they won tomorrow somehow 😍

I loved Demougeot-Lemercier, Lopareva-Brissault and the Taschlers today. Was gutted for Smart / Dieck. Mr milly was surprised at how many teams were coached by that lady Marie Universe.
I suspect Fear and Gibson will blow the roof off tomorrow. Looking forward to it.

The ISU needs to form a partnership of some sort with musicians where THEY pay for the music rights, not the skaters. I thought that's what some of these partnerships with places like Click n Clear were but it sounds like for some of the music there, the skaters still pay?? Or am I misunderstanding something?

I like Ricky Martin but hold crap that was a lot. Also, he has other songs from the '90s which I believe would have fit the brief (I have the CD). At least in the juniors they broke it up with some Jamiroquai.

Fear/Gibson skated really well. Guignard/Fabbri are really testing me as a fan of theirs (in the RD anyway). Lopareva/Brissaud being behind Reed/Amberlivicius is a crime.
