I would love to see Sherry Zhang get a JGP after her 2 consecutive strong NQS comps (Glacier Falls and Golden West).

I believe the singles skaters/coaches were informed not long after the U.S. Junior Team Cup in July about their JGP assignments (top 6 women were assigned; Soho was 5th there).

I had heard something similar and I kind of thought maybe she was just newly back on the ice. It looked like Derrick Delmore was at the boards with her and I’m pretty sure that was not her coach last year. But I’m not sure….either way, I hope she gets everything sorted out, whatever that might mean for her.
I have been pretty underwhelmed with all of our ladies so far this season. It seems like many of the promising Juniors from last season are struggling this season. Also, many of the middle of the pack at Nationals Seniors don’t seem to be competing this year or are definitely not at their previous level. I know we are in a rebuilding time but still.
I’m wondering if the move to NQS competitions is helping or hurting the skaters. Most Seniors that might qualify for Nationals are used to being ready for Regionals (assuming they have to compete) in late October. Now, it’s July/August time frame. That’s really early…I was glad to see the competitions pushed back a bit this season. I’ll be interested to see if the rework anything in the coming years.
 
Or perhaps figure skating simply isn’t attracting talented girls when they can do gymnastics or other sports
 
I think Soho is very talented - she was the only U.S. girl to medal (silver) in her JGP debut at 13 last year in Riga, Latvia.

Delmore started coaching Soho with her choreographer Misha Ge (his photo of the 3 of them: https://www.instagram.com/p/CpIwsfQp-YJ/) before 2023 Junior Worlds and Ge coached Soho in Calgary. She was with Chris Pottenger's team before that.

Of the Junior women I watched online at Golden West, I really enjoyed Kanon Smith's SP in her comeback season and Teryn Kim's Sleeping Beauty FS (music is very well-edited, IMO). Sherry Zhang skated with power/attack and many of her jumps had great flow out. Cleo Park looked improved from her last NQS at Glacier Falls.

I see talented young skaters at the lower levels too, but the road to successful results nationally and internationally usually is a long, winding and hard one, as we all know.

These are all very good points.

The final 3 NQS singles competitions (skaters are allowed to compete in 3 at the max) are scheduled for the first week of October (around the time when the 9 Regionals used to be held) - USFS' main info page for this season's NQS competitions: https://www.usfigureskating.org/2023-24-national-qualifying-series-competition-central

Josephine has a bye to 2024 Nationals due to her 5th place finish at Nationals last year. However, if she wants to be considered for the Youth Olympic Games, she will need to compete in a NQS (highest total score among the age-eligible women will get the spot).

Posting the news in here first because of the earlier posts in this thread: Sherry Zhang has replaced Soho Lee in the ISU's entries for JGP Budapest as of Sept. 8 (not yet confirmed on USFS' International Assignments page).

Sherry is still listed in the Junior Women's SP starting order for Skate St. Moritz as of now.

New discovery for me today! :) Elena Wilson won the Novice Women's event (139.17 total) at Skate St. Moritz, skating to "My Body is a Cage" (female cover), scoring 100.14 in hr FS with opening 3Lz+2T, 3F & 3Lz all smoothly landed, plus L4 steps.

Sherry is skating so hot right now, I'd be really surprised if she doesn't snag the last JGP Armenia spot. Having said that, I'd probably strongly consider flipping Elyce and Sarah. I think the field at Gdansk is a little weaker and Elyce could easily win silver there (or maybe gold). Putting both Elyce and Sherry at the last JGP decreases both of their chances (slim though they may be) of slipping into the JGPF.

Katie Shen is the last to skate (this is her first NQS comp.) and right before her is Milena Markin, who performed very expressively in her FS to the Beauty & the Beast live action film soundtrack at Golden West - hers was one of my fave performances that I watched online! :)

Elena Wilson had two great weeks in a row - she scored 105 the week before at Skate Houston.

Sherry Zhang was really excellent. A lot more power in her skating than I remember her having last year. Cleo Park did great as well, but didn't have the same strength/flow IMO. I like Annika Chao's skating too, she just didn't have all her jumps this time and the other two did. Seems like they are all doing well training together and pushing each other.
