Judging was generous in the junior RD, once you dig into the protocols.Akalins won Senior RD (Ling/Wein WD) at Challenge Cup; top 3 in Junior RD are:
Caroline Mullen/Brendan Mullen 57.09
Sylvia Li/Rowan Le Coq 52.36
Julia Epps/Blake Gilman 51.73
Results: https://ijs.usfigureskating.org/leaderboard/results/2023/33517/index.asp
I think some of us are just happy that they have returned to compete after their rumored split earlier this year. I enjoyed their West Side Story FD (with her costume change mid-program ) last season when they won the Novice event at the U.S. Dance Final. The transition from Novice to Junior can be challenging, so we'll see how they fare at the Final (Nov. 14-19 in Bloomington, Minnesota).Snarks for Li/Le Coq. What is the fuss about? They skate small and slow.
I was at Ardmore for part of the competition and agree about the Mullens being a class above. Especially the FD. But I also couldn't take my eyes off of Grace Yi/Danilo Savelev, especially Danila who has some awesome edges. Also, Epps and Gilman caught my eye with their performance quality. Anyway, it was my first time being in that cool (cold!) rink and i enjoyed the event. I didn't stay for Seniors FD yesterday but was surprised to see the Akalins so far below M/L since I thought their RD was pretty good.I'm gushing over Mullen/Mullen. Power, speed, grace, all that. Of all the Juniors, theirs was the only watchable dance break.
Snarks for Li/Le Coq. What is the fuss about? They skate small and slow. Also, their packaging I don't understand. For the FS, he was wearing a leather holster (if I'm being generous) and she was dressed like a homeless child. And if you're thinking "well, that's the story they were trying to tell," let me tell you -- it wasn't.
In senior, Murphy/Levitt were a joy to watch. He has improved so much since last year.
From the protocols looks like they had a twizzle disaster which then affected their next element (only level 1 on the spin), plus they didn't get some lift levels.I didn't stay for Seniors FD yesterday but was surprised to see the Akalins so far below M/L since I thought their RD was pretty good.
So am I!I'm glad to see Epps/Gilman seem to have worked through whatever was affecting them at the start of the season.
According to The Skating Lesson, one women’s senior skater collapsed during her free skate. (It’s at the 50-min mark…about a Sr woman skater who trains in Colorado, who is adjusted to the altitude.) Who is that? Hope that she is recovering as well as she can.So am I!

Nicholas Brooks improved his total score from 175.32 (Golden West) to 194.28 and now has the 5th highest total score. He attempted 3A in his FS for the first time, AFAIK - it was called < fall (I've seen nice ones landed by him in practice).
Junior Women FS is live now: https://ijs.usfigureskating.org/leaderboard/results/2023/33437/CAT019SEG029.html
ETA that Logan Higase-Chen won (179.48), improving her #3 NQS total score by 4 points; Jessica Jurka was 2nd (159.02).
Senior Women FS is this afternoon: https://ijs.usfigureskating.org/leaderboard/results/2023/33437/CAT020SEG032.html
Josephine Lee was a late entry (she wasn't on the initial SP starting order that I saw).
ETA final top 3:
Wren Warne-Jacobsen, Go4Gold Shakopee Skating Academy 58.26 (1) 107.16 (3) 165.42
Josephine Lee, All Year FSC 54.70 (3) 110.49 (1) 165.19 (first NQS score; had 170.92 in Glacier Falls Sr. exhibition)
Clare Seo, Broadmoor SC 54.01 (4) 108.98 (2) 162.99
ETA: Iplanhope to post a NQS standings/top scores update for Senior-Novice singles later today (... or tomorrow).
Nope, Dave did not identify which discipline it was in, nor did he identify the skaters gender. Having said that, check out the threads in GSD for the other two disciplines that were competed at the Broadmoor Fall Classic.According to The Skating Lesson, one women’s senior skater collapsed during her free skate. It’s towards the end of this, although I was too sleepy to find the minute number. They say that, for minutes, she was on the ice without medical help; volunteers covered her with blankets.
This and That - 2023 Nebelhorn Trophy (Fear and Gibson's Rocky, Isabeau Levito, Brooke Tufts)

Wow, the pair is going to Skate America, no less! They’d better recover!I'll make it easy for you @Frau Muller: https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/th...any-teams-we-have.110747/page-10#post-6472359
Hosted by The Dallas Figure Skating Club at Children’s Health StarCenter Plano (4020 West Plano Parkway, Plano, TX 75093).Tomoki Hiwatashi is on the entry list for Texas Trophy NQS in Senior Men.
Also William Hubbart! First NQS of the season for him too.
And Emmanuel Savary.
Plus .. the fourth entry is Sebra Yen, representing SC of Northern Virginia.
The name was not familiar to me, but FWIW, seems to be the same person as Sebra Yen who competed in 2008-9 season at JGPs and Four Continents. Born in Charlottesville and from SC of Northern Virginia, Yen represented Taiwan. Coached then by Audrey Weisiger and Chris Conte. (Yen's pronouns are they/them, per Instagram profile.)
From a Dec 2022 reel on Yen's Instagram account (which has many reels of his recent skating):
I started skating later than most folks (age 12) and was always in a rush to pass the next test and land the next triple. I did not have the support necessary to continue on and stopped competing after 2009. Life happens and I am now skating again for fun and for health purposes at the age of 32. Skating is for everyone — there is NO linear path in skating. It is not just an “elite” sport and we need to change that.#figureskating #adultsskatetoo #asianskater #aapi #bipoc #queer #trans #nonbinary
(All Senior Men in this season's NQS should be able to advance to Sectionals, which have 18 slots per section.
Ditto for Junior Men and Novice Men.)
I was thinking about creating a thread for the inaugural Kings Cup International (Senior/Junior B singles, like Cranberry Cup) & Autumn Classic NQS in El Segundo, CA if/when entries for either comp. are published -- yes or no? I don't yet know if there will be a free or paid livestream or none at all.Does anyone know who will compete for international portion of LA Autumn Classic? (I am not sure where to ask this).
Andrea82 was the first to post about the name change back in August in this GSD thread: https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/th...petitions-2023-24-season.110752/#post-6460515Please start the thread, Sylvia.
I did not know that they changed the name - Kings Cup International ⁉
Ting Cui is entered, based on the latest info I have.Does anyone know who will compete for international portion of LA Autumn Classic? (I am not sure where to ask this).
ETA:Update: Tomoki Hiwatashi is on the entry list for Boston Open NQS this week.
He now is marked as WD in Texas Trophy NQS starting order.
Very happy to see that Lucas Altieri (former Team USA junior medalist) also is on Senior Men entry list for Boston Open NQS.
He has been skating for Boston University's winning intercollegiate team, and also placed fourth at 2023 Collegiates.
