2015 - 2016 TV Season

Today I binge-watched five of the six episodes of the Australian TV series, The Code, on Netflix. My only excuse is that I was sick and couldn't do much else. It was a good show, though, and the ending was worth it.

Anyone else watching well-made shows on Netflix, Hulu etc. during the holidays?

I am interested in finishing Wayward Pines when it appears on Shomi January 1st. As for Netflix I have been watching a few movies like Avengers 2, Transformers 4, LOTR, and I'm also watching Daredevil again.

Has anyone seen The Honourable Woman with Maggie Gyllenhaal on Netflix? It touches upon the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through a very personal perspective and it's quite thrilling at times.

It was a CBC co-production so aired here last summer. I thought it was extremely well done, but not exactly escapist entertainment!

Yes. We watched the final season of Last Tango in Halifax and are watching the latest mini-season of Inspector Lewis now. And I watched a two-part series called Appropriate Adult with Emily Watson (creepy but fascinating, based on a real-life story of a woman who was a court-appointed volunteer aide to an accused serial murderer), and now I'm watching old movies available free with Amazon Prime. House by the River, a short, dramatic Fritz Lang noir, and No Man of Her Own with Barbara Stanwyck, my all-time favorite actress - it was a lot better than you'd expect from the title. Stanwyck being Stanwyck, when she doesn't have a man of her own, she DOES something about it! Yes, I am definitely indulging in a lot of escapism right now as I recover from my Christmas labors, not to mention a flood in the basement yesterday morning at 1:30 am. It took me two hours of backbreaking work to fix it. Reward: another movie, of course.

Have you Stanwyck fans seen the movie The Furies? She and Walter Huston blew me away.

Is anyone watching Making a Murderer on Netflix? It's a documentary series about the Steven Avery case. I'm on episode five and I've been binge watching with a friend all day.

I just started watching this and am on episode 3 - very disturbing to think of the horror Avery went through being wrongfully imprisoned for 18 years - wondering what the outcome of the series is going to be.

Love that one!! I think we had this conversation earlier this year, but no problem. She played such unconventional parts! Or if they were conventional (like Stella Dallas) she made the emotion so overwhelming -- I have never been able to rewatch Stella Dallas because it was so painful. Have you seen Fritz Lang's Clash by Night? I still haven't seen the whole thing, but it was my first glimpse of her, and just the second half was enough to make me a fan for life. She was middle-aged at that point and Marilyn Montroe was in it too (and I adore Marilyn) but it was the cigarette-voiced Stanwyck who bowled me over.

I was thrilled to learn that "Last Ship", "Turn", "Ripper Street" "The Three Musketeers" were all renewed. Whew......:40beers: (now if I can only continue to afford my Comcast bill )

I've seen The Last Kingdom and I liked it. I think it's on Amazon Instant video. I'm currently watching Anzac Girls on Acorn TV. Has anyone seen it? My only annoyance is that while you can watch on your mobile device it pays no attention to 'resume' or 'fast-forward' or any other function except 'stop'. It keeps playing from beginning no matter what you do or if you accidently close it. I've seen just the first episode.
The Last Kingdom in my view is better than Vikings and not as violent. They don't go graphic, just enough for you to infer what happens next.

My new favorite shows are Superstore and Telenovla! I was laughing all night last night. So over-the-top and just .... funny!

Last Tango is great! Appropriate Adult is a little too creepy for me, but my partner is enjoying it. I started watching Standoff this evening, but wasn't drawn in. I love Gina Torres, but didn't find the two lead actors very convincing. Nice to see the boss from White Collar put in a guest appearance in the second episode, though. Like you, I have also watched a few movies this holiday season. Two of them - Five Flights Up (with Morgan Freeman and Diane Keaton) and The Baker (with Damian Lewis and a couple of wonderful Welsh actors who also star in Stella) - ended up being quite disappointing (the former particularly so). The third, the Irish movie, Life's a Breeze, I enjoyed. I guess the Netflix ratings do not always correlate with the IMDB or Rotten Tomatoes ones, and there is always an element of subjectivity involved.

Locally we've had a station change from the This movie channel , which we enjoyed, to the Grit channel. Big yawn for old westerns and war movies. Also, finding the new Comet network mostly useless. It did have some long lost quirky films like The Twonky, about an alien who lands on earth and takes over a TV set. Yeah. It was a giggle.

So I just binge watched Season 1 of Mr. Robot and I have just one question ...... what the hell was that??!!!! That was the most bizarre show I have ever seen, I'm not quite sure what the hell is going on, yet strangely I cannot wait until Season 2 starts! Very very strange yet highly entertaining.

I watched the Last Kingdon when it aired on BBC America. Very good show.

I would recommend the following shows, Human(on AMC), In to the Badlands and Strange Empire(Netflix and Amazon).

I am catching up on the Royals and Into the Badlands now. Also, two weeks until Agent Carter starts back. I can't wait.
