The Murderbot books are wonderful, the series not so much. I find it a huge disappointment.

"Patience" has been a wonderful surprise and a good mystery series on PBS. It is set in York and involves a group of detectives and a young woman who is autistic who works in their records department and has a talent for puzzles and pulling details together.

"Patience" is an English version of the French series "Astrid" aka "Astrid et Raphaelle". My PBS station has shown 3 seasons of "Astrid" (French with English subtitles), and is now showing the first season of "Patience". I'm 3 episodes in and so far I find the French version to be superior but maybe the English one will grow on me more.

Online PBS has all 5 seasons of Astrid now. We've enjoyed it quite a bit.

I'm not sure why people are put off by another language. I think about all of the versions of "The Bridge" and I still prefer the orginal although "The Tunnel" was good.

I like when I land on something I know absolutely nothing about and find it to be a wonderful surprise. I saw "Bafta nominated" and a police procedural called "The Offence" on Britbox and ended up binging the first season over the long weekend. I love the three female leads and thought the series was well paced.

I happen to be watching "Life on Mars" as well and to see a male dominated police procedural set in the 70's juxtaposed against this modern police procedural is interesting. A lot has changed.

If you can't speak the language, subtitles only do so much. They don't catch all the nuances, y'know? But there are several shows/movies in other languages that I've enjoyed despite that.

For those of you who thought that Prime Video’s Shiny Happy People docuseries about the IBLP/Duggar Family was meaningful to watch, here’s some great news: Shiny Happy People: A Teenage Holy War comes out on June 23.

Update: Season 2 of Shiny Happy People will be coming out on July 2. Here’s the trailer. Looks like it will be about Teen Mania and those “Acquire the Fire” rallies.

I'm more interested in this than in the George & Mandy sitcom, tbh. Though it may be that Stuart is only good in small doses. Time will tell. But if they make it a workplace comedy with some quirky employees, that might be fun.

After I finished Dept Q a friend introduced me to A Discovery of Witches to scratch my Matthew Goode itch, and I will be forever indebted to her. ?

I attempted to read the first book and had to stop because I thought it was so awfully written (I think I described it at the time to a friend as "constipated Anne Rice writes a Harlequin romance with witches and vampires."). But I caught a few episodes of the TV series when it first aired and was pleasantly surprised. I finally watched the whole thing on Netflix. None of it ever makes a damn bit of sense in the end, and the whole last episode was beyond anticlimactic, but there are some good performances in it.

Speaking of spooky Netflix series, I enjoyed the first season of "Sandman," but the new second season is a big miss for me. I thought it was done after the six episodes only to discover a few more episodes drop later this month. I'll pass on those. The wigs and make-up look victim to budget woes and the special effects pale compared to the first season in quality. The plot is, literally, all over the place mythologically and even the actors appear bored.

I think there’s little doubt Colbert’s show’s cancelation (technically not renewing his contract, but not terminating it early) was politically motivated. Sickening to hear how Trump reacted to the news.

I've binged Ballard over the last two days and enjoyed it. It's fun to watch and not too dark. I've always liked Maggie Q. Hope there'll be a second series.
(Haven't seen Bosch but the first episode. Didn't like it.)

I hated that episode. I am so over the Spock-Chappell romance and I hate Q and Q-like episodes on top of it.

I enjoyed "Untamed." A mystery, in Yosemite, starring Eric Bana, Rosemarie DeWitt and Sam Neill? You could do a whole lot worse.


I also watched "Jaws 50" and it was instant nostalgia for that summer. I was a teenager and the "summer blockbuster" wasn't a thing until the film came out. It is nice to be around for the start of something brand new. I'm not sure movies are events anymore.

Same, although I hope ep.2 is the only 'fantasy' episode this season (usually it's the second last one). I don't mind them but prefer they are rare.

Well, as the current storyline ties in to the original series (the character of Roger Korby appears in the season 1 episode 'What Are Little Girls Made Of') I'd say it's close to being resolved permanently.

The Q-like being is also a reference to the original series episode 'The Squire of Gothos' where the Enterprise crew are kidnapped by a being called Trelane, who is dressed in 18th century clothes with the same resolution at the end of the episode. I guessed that one correctly almost immediately, but I'm sure a lot of people watching were thinking Q (Trelane is never canonically linked to the Q). But it does create a continuity issue with the original series as original series Spock should recognised Trelane from this choronologically earlier encounter.

Yeah, this character reminded me of Trelane, totally. We didn't know about the Q at the time of TOS so how could he be linked to the Q? And somehow I thought the timeline was altered by... something... I don't know, all these pre- and post- and simultaneous-guels have confused me. I feel like Janeway when she said, "The past is the future, the future is the past, it all gives me a headache" when she was talking about time travel.
