    U.S. Pairs 2019-20 season - News & Updates, Part X

Well, it's possible for two things to be true at once here. Ashley and Tim deserved to win AND their scores were quite generous IMO. But, without a doubt, they are continuing to improve and come together as a pair. I think there's a good chance they'll stay the US #1 team for another year.

    U.S. Ladies [#27]: A Time to Reboot

I'm also not sure this year's goal is a spot on the Worlds team. I think making Nationals, and skating relatively well there, would be an enormous accomplishment. Sometimes it's not about the biggest, flashiest outcome, it's about feeling like you're making progress.

From Russia with Love [#33]: Summer 2019

TBH I find it pretty weird and almost disturbing, rather than fascinating, the way people are becoming fans of a coaching camp. I mean, people were having meltdowns because a skater in "Team Tutberidze" didn't have as high PCS as they thought she should have in a single short program in an early...

    U.S. Ladies [#27]: A Time to Reboot

I don't mind the idea of more test skates for junior competitors, but I do think you need to leave room for skaters who do well/medal at a JGP to get another JGP, since that rewards their performance within the same season and gives them a shot at qualifying for the final.

U.S. Pairs 2018-19 season - News & Updates, Part IX

Wasn't she "too old" to start skating pairs in the first place in her thirties? If anyone can start over with a new partner it's her.

The Dance Hall 6: We're All Off Our Rockers 2018-2019

This season, for whatever reason, I've gone back to loving the well-executed complicated acrobatic lifts. McNamara/Carpenter are a great example, not just the RD one mentioned on the last page but also the stationary lift in their FD was quite striking when I saw it live. Hubbell/Donohue FD...

U.S. Ladies [#25]: Method in the Madness

I love when she acknowledges that recovery isn't a magic wand, it's a process. I love seeing her intelligence and humor come out. I hope she will continue doing the things that make her happiest and healthiest.

Coughlin's family speaks, shares perspective on SafeSport investigation

No, you shouldn't wait for an indictment, or believing you have enough for an indictment, to act. In the professional world, the moment an allegation of serious misconduct is made, that person goes on administrative leave while an investigation continues. It's incredibly difficult and stressful...

U.S. Ice Dance 2018-19 season news & updates

I think the US has no good options when it comes to 4CC dance spots. On one hand, you don't want to hamper your top 3 teams heading into Worlds. On the other, you have three more very good young teams who could really use the boost from that kind of high level competition, but whose seasons are...

U.S. Pairs 2018-19 season - News & Updates, Part IX

Well, it doesn't rule all, because if it did Kayne/O'Shea would probably be going to Worlds, full stop. They have a GP silver, the highest SB of all the US teams, won the short program, and would have most likely won the whole thing if they had gone up on the last lift. Denney/Frazier probably...

NYT: Gracie Gold’s Battle for Olympic Glory Ended in a Fight to Save Herself

FWIW, I don't think this would ever be feasible. Every state has different laws around who (licensed clinicians, medical doctors, family and friends) can force involuntary mental health evaluations, and what those evaluations actually involve. In my current state, Washington, people can only be...

U.S. Ice Dance 2018-19 season news & updates

I still tend to think the US has the deepest bench of ice dance teams in the world, including both seniors and juniors. Beyond the top three senior teams are three more talented younger teams who can hold their own in competition. Huh. Why? Every time I see them I'm impressed yet again by...

U.S. Pairs 2018-19 season - News & Updates, Part IX

Does anyone have any actual references for this? I remember interviews after 2014 where both Simon and Marissa acknowledged that she sat them down and said she wanted to pursue a different partnership. I do not remember her every saying it was because Simon was going to retire. I also don't...

    U.S. Ladies [#24]: Starr-Ting Order/Detailed Classification

I've gone back and forth over whether a clean Alysa beats a clean Bradie. Bradie has higher PCS at this point, but at the same time PCS isn't her greatest strength as an athlete, so there may not be a huge gap there. Ting and Mariah would definitely factor heavily into and "all go clean"...

    U.S. Ladies [#24]: Starr-Ting Order/Detailed Classification

I literally cannot think of a single example of this happening in skating. Maybe you're referencing rule changes like limiting the number of quads or jumping passes in the second half? But neither of those came about because other skaters complained about not being able to do it on social media...
