The Dance Hall 13: When You Dance on the Ice and Your Feet Twizzle Twice, That's Amore

Am I correctly seeing that the French judge placed G/F 2nd and FB/C 4th? Interesting....
Not really interesting. They had them 4th in TES because of the error in the final element. Until that point they were giving higher overall GOE to FB/S. They had FB/S second in PCS again because of the error ( they had them 1st in two of the components).

Yes, but I would have expected them to dump G/F regardless. Not that any of this bodes well for G/F.

I don’t recall that many dance teams changing their programs midway through a season. The Duschesneys? Torvill and Dean? The teams mentioned is more a reflection of IAM, which good on them. Gilles Poirier have had their share of poorly received programs and persisted.

The knee socks was a thing in the movie Clueless, so maybe the Italians can do a Clueless RD where she is Alicia Silverstone and he is Paul Rudd.

It's a shame that the reigning Junior World Champions Noemi Maria Tali & Noah Lafornara have delayed the start to their 2025-26 season due to his injury. If Charlene & Marco are going to get dumped on by the international judges anyway, perhaps it's time to get Noemi & Noah to the Olympics THIS season (it's too bad Italy didn't earn a second ice dance slot for Milan) if they're healthy with great material. Denis Petukhov and Melissa Gregory are building a great ice dance program in Hartford CT, and we've all seen what Hana & Danill are doing on the Junior Grand Prix circuit as reigning US Junior champions.

They did dump their Perry Mason program for Bond in 2017-18, when it wasn't well received.

I think two things can be true: G/F once again have a program that does them no favors, and the judges have dumped them hard for what I think are fairly obvious political reasons. I'd put them in the same category as L/B this season, in terms of teams who were always going to have an uphill battle to maintain position with all the heraldry around the arrival of FB/C, and who are making it all too easy for the judges to justify sending them down the ranks.

For me the main problems with G/F's RD are 1) lack of competitive experience at this point, which is fixable and 2) they're actually trying to do the 90s, which is...

Look, the teams that have done best with the theme so far are the ones that have gone: okay, take 1-3 iconic/cheesy 90s hits, maybe reference some iconic costumes, and completely ignore the requirement for 90s dance styles, and instead just do their thing. In showing that they understood the assignment (extremely well, to the point where I was having disconcerting rage flashbacks*), G/F have in fact failed the assignment, because the assignment as written is not passable.

*Not anger, but an iconic and long-running late-night music video show on the ABC.

First look at Bashynska/Perron

Best RD music so far !( choreographed in France I believe so it is what it is lol). Finally some Nirvana and am just thankful they are not on the Senior international circuit where Rettstatt makes them change their music

Great music choice but their styling doesn't match the music. They should have leaned into grunge and gone with flannel, ripped jeans and messy hair.

Charlene decided to call out the judges on social media, not sure this will end well for Guignard/Fabbri.

Having watched Bourne & Kraatz pull this in 1998, Charlene just B&K'd her team.

That RD was terrible. But instead of taking feedback and going back to the basics she pulled this.

Good luck to them.

As for F-B/C, they were alright. I appreciated aspects about this program. I loved Fear & Gibson.

🙏 to the skate Gods they win a medal at the Oly's.

It really is. As skaters they utterly lack both irony and camp, but straightforward romanticism suits them well and they sold it gorgeously.
Agreed, it's their best FD in a long time, and I think the home ice response will be really moving.

However, I think their behavior will likely hurt them, for two days in a row, they stormed out of the K&C and refused to talk to the media in the mixed zone. They are both 35+, this type of behavior (that started last season), combined with the social media shenanigans, will be off-putting to the judges IMO. And to think all they need to do is come out and say they are going to fight for a medal and leave everything on the ice and people I think will rally behind them.

If they are getting dumped to such severe levels, doing a press conference isn't going to fix anything. And the fans will still rally behind them if they feel they've been unjustly scored. We've seen it before, and it doesn't matter whether fans know any rules or not (cough cough B/K days).

There's a difference between a press conference and speaking to the media in the mixed zone, which is what I referred to. The current behavior that includes sulking, storming out of the K&C, refusing to speak to the media and reposting shady posts is doing them no favors. They are not the first team to get dumped, and teams came back from this before, but their behavior is digging them deeper into a hole IMO.

Okay, but what does speaking to the media in the mixed zone have to do with rebounding from what seems to be a clear message given by this panel anyways? The judges are going to do what they want to do. Speaking to the media and saying they are disappointed won't make the panel suddenly change their ways.

If anything, this behavior probably gets them more fandom pushing behind them.

The medals are almost non-existent for them anymore. FB/C will be the gold medal favorites by December. They already were trailing way behind C/B and G/P for a few years, and now even have lost enough times to F/G.

You will notice I only complimented the music choice ;)
They are in a transitional stage just skating Canadian events so I don't have much opinion. Their programs were done in France by a team I don't really find interesting.

It's about perception; there's value in them appearing to have a fighting spirit instead of looking pissed off and defeated. No doubt what they are going through is objectively hard, I just think we've seen teams go through similar things and handle them much better.

That's because many skating fans on social media (Twitter, Reddit) tend to be childish as well 😬

All of this reminds me of Bourne/Kraatz’s behavior at the 1999-2000 GP where Dubova was feeding their feelings of resentment towards the judges, and it wasn’t very productive for them. It did help them make the choice to leave her and go to Tarasova.

The thing is that Charlene and Marco actually have an argument with the PCS. Bourne & Kraatz had trash programs that the US and Canadian media were trying to scream injustice about every chance they got. It's absolutely unexplainable to lose PCS to the Lithuanians, and their concern in the K&C with the score yesterday centered around how they suddenly got tossed down to the 8.5 range, somewhere they haven't been in a long time.

I do think there's some 👀 over the specific judges who tried to lowball them, and I thought the FD just reiterated all of it. But being gracious also isn't going to get the IAM-supposed bloc to suddenly say "wow they were so sweet, here's your points back"

I do think it says a lot that Barbara doesn’t have any other top teams. Don’t think they’d have ever made the move but even training with Margalio and getting choreo from Scali would’ve had made a bit of difference in terms of packaging for them.
