After reading the things said about Isabeau on this thread, and reading this article, I wonder if it has crossed the minds of folks that she's 16, she's allowed to have some room to grow and make mistakes, and the last thing we want is another wonderful skater crashing and burning because of pressure. TBH, if USFSA is backing off on her, it's entirely possible that it's by request. A good parent would kick ass for their kid if they need a little room.
Also, I can't blame Ziegler - the wonderkind mantle is heavy and lined with spikes and if she needs a little time and space to adjust to that, plus the trip halfway around the world for 4C's, well maybe USFSA is finally showing some compassion. Stupid of them to schedule this late in January, anyway.

I'd love to never see another face at the beginning of a skate like Michele Kwan (rarely) had, or Jeremy, or Gracie - no pukefaces or stressed stony robot faces. I want these young people to look excited and ready to show us their best. Frankly, if USFSA can't ensure that is possible for the skaters, then they need an overhaul.
This. I really hate how these girls are hyped up and immediately declared the next one, and when they're human they get torn down and people write them off. It needs to stop.

That assumes that these are the same people, and they've turned on these skaters. Not everyone here is David Lease. Some of us have never hyped either of them.
At this point, after watching skating for many years, I take hype with a grain of salt. Results will be relative to a skater’s will to train and improve, their coaches/trainers of all types, and finances among other things. I enjoy a new skater reaching new heights on a podium and wish them the best if there is a change of heart, injury, etc. I don’t think we’ll see another Michelle Kwan. Whether or not you liked her or agreed with all of her results, she dominated (was in the top tier) nationally and internationally for 10 years.

I obviously missed the news about this, but I was just watching the women's practice and Isabeau was skating to different short program music. (Nella Fantasia?) Did she change her program because the one she was doing was just too jam packed? She mentioned before that, if she made just one mistake in that program, it would throw off the program. (I think she missed some levels because of that.)

It was news to everyone watching the practice and reporting/discussing over in the Kiss 'n Cry sub-forum.

Thanks. She didn't do a lot of the program, so it's hard to know if this one is better. But, if it's not as jam-packed and over-choreographed as her original SP and she feels more comfortable with it, then that's a good thing. I do hope she gets some good choreography from a good choreographer next season.

We noticed the short program and music change for Isabeau in the late night practice last night. We all felt the music was much better suited for her than the snake program. She skates so beautifully in such beautiful positions. Such a standout from the rest of the field. She had a male coach standing by the boards along with her usual coach. Anyone know who he is? She has got to be feeling the pressure going for three titles in a row. Not many US women have done it. But overall she looked very good in practice, including jumps.

Not that this makes her feel less pressure, but she’s going for her second, not third title ;) .

Also met Josephine Lee’s nervous mother at the late practice last night. Such a lovely person. Nervous of course. I asked her if she gets nervous and she said yes she usually doesn’t watch her daughter skate, but last year when she did so well in San Jose she was in the arena. I told her that means she needs to watch her again this year. Also she told me she heard the women’s free skate is sold out. The local NBC affiliate news here last night gave a big promo of the Nationals weekend schedule.

That would be great if it’s sold out, especially a Friday night session. This seems like a decent size arena as well. US Figure Skating seems to be getting at least some people in the seats for both SA and this…I met people at SA who had just seen it advertised and decided to come watch, they had no ties to skating at all.

Well, does sold out mean the ENTIRE arena or just the lower bowl? It would be great if it was the whole arena but earlier in the week it looked like the upper bowl was curtained off.

I’m sure it would just be the lower bowl. I can’t imagine them filling up the entire place. Maybe they would open a couple of the upper if they really did sellout.

Otar Japaridze (in the grey puffer in these pics)? He works with Isabeau on skating skills.

I agree that this style better suits her natural style. But, I do applaud her for experimenting and trying new styles, and I think she did a good job developing that program and it brought out some of her personality. I would guess that it wasn't the style of music or movement that caused her to change the program, though. She's been having problems with that short program on the technical side. If she's off by one step or half a second, it throws off the entire program.

He is doing a good job with her from what I saw in practice!
She has very good skating skills. And Jackie and Polina mentioned during the first practice that she was skating with a lot of speed. (IMO, the real problems with her speed are that she slows down for the jumps and she sometimes gets too tentative when she's nervous.)

The Ziegler thing is really strange and we'll probably be talking about it for ages, but the Occam's Razor explanation, based on all we know, seems to be that she had an injury, wasn't ready for two competitions back to back, needed a bit more recovery time, and decided to go for the later competition.

I think nationals does mean something, and I really would have loved to see her become a national medalist (or champion), but if she can't, she can't.

I have no explanation for why she was still asked to promote nationals on the Today show, though. (But it was nice to see her nonetheless.)
Then why not go to Nationals and if she finished top 2 she could go to Worlds and have plenty of time between the two events to recover. But with how Amber and Isabeau skated tonight if they both finish top 2 they are both going to Worlds regardless of what Ava does.

From the information we have Ziegler was not ready to compete this week due to injury, and withdrew so she could be ready for next week.

Congratulations to Amber for becoming national champion and landing that triple axel. It's not how I wanted her to win, and I'm sure it's not how she wanted to win. But, it's still a national title. I hope she can finally pull it all together at Worlds. I'm rooting for her.

I felt so bad for Isabeau. I just wanted to reach through my screen and give her a hug. She looked good in practices, but it was obvious from the beginning of the skate that she was skating scared. She's been feeling the pressure ever since she won last year - and even before that. She is such a gorgeous skater. I hope she is getting good support from a sports psychologist and good advice from some veterans. And please let her work with some good choreographers over the summer. She's been having issues throughout the season with her spins. Last night was not an aberration. So, I hope she gets some help with those, too.

I also felt bad for Lindsay this week. The injury was such poor timing. I really think that the rest of the season was a great step in the right direction, especially with the choreography. And, before this week, she had looked like she was improving her URs a little bit. I hope she can take some comfort in how she did earlier in the season and build on that.

But, I was very happy for Josephine. This should give her a lot of confidence for the future.

So I have this weird feeling that this result puts us with Starr Andrews as 1st Worlds alternate :p
Doubtful - Ziegler and Seo both have the TES mins. All it does is put her (and Seo) in the Selection Pool.

Well she was .16 behind Isabeau in the FS score.
Given Isabeau's free skate, that doesn't say much. :(

Yes but Levito isn't generally falling 3 times either. How often have we heard former champions say they feel more pressure at Nationals than Worlds? ?‍♂️
Yeah. I'm pretty sure that Isabeau's selection to the Worlds team isn't going to be because of her program tonight. I can't remember her ever having a performance like that. She's going to be selected for the World team for other reasons.

ETA: On a brighter note, I'm looking forward to seeing Isabeau's new exhibition to Lana Del Ray's "Love," along with the new costume discussed in this video:

ETAA: Here's a link to the women's press conference. Amber being candid and a class act as usual, including when she gets stupid questions about her age and why American women haven't won an Olympic medal since 2006. I think she's a great ambassador for the sport and LGBTQ+ skaters. Isabeau says she came in feeling shaky and nervous about the event and trying to defend her title and described her performance as a fever dream. She points out, at least she didn't screw up the spins. I guess that was one good thing about her performance tonight. Interesting that Josephine has a sports psychologist there with her:
