Ava Ziegler’s mom, Patricia Mansfield, last competed at US Nationals in senior in 2003, I believe.

Assuming we see Ava at Nationals, it will be a gap of only 20 years between mother and daughter in seniors. Is there any other mother-daughter with a smaller time period between appearances in seniors, or is this the quickest? This is a smaller gap than Maribel Vinson Owen and Maribel Jr (counting senior pairs) or Laurence.

Dug out my January 2019 U.S. Nationals post from the Archives (linked NJ local article is still online):
For those who may remember Patricia Mansfield (competed at 3 Nationals in Senior - in 1994, 5th in 1995 & 2002 at the age of 28), her daughter Ava Ziegler is competing this morning in the Juvenile Girls event. They are mentioned in this 1/13/19 New Jersey article on 6 local Juvenile skaters: https://www.dailyrecord.com/story/l...-skating-championships-nj-skaters/2496495002/

ETA that Ava won the pewter (4th place) medal. :)
Ava jumped from Intermediate (2019-20) to Junior (2020-21), skipping the Novice level: https://usfigureskatingfanzone.com/sports/figure-skating/roster/ava-ziegler/714

Sherry Zhang was the highest US women’s finisher at JGP Egna: 6th. Soho Lee finished 7th overall. Many competitors had problems in these finals.

Patricia Mansfield skated at four Nationals in senior - she competed in 2003, too. (I double checked just in case I was hallucinating her performances in Dallas - lord only knows the rest of that Nationals seems hallucinogenic. )

I’m excited to see this - Ava has never seemed to get as much buzz as some of the other girls, but she’s such a well-rounded skater and her technique looks very sustainable to me. I think she has the potential to do very well at nationals this year.

I really liked her mom’s skating back in the day, too, but I’ll try not to focus on the part where that makes me feel old. ;)

Way to go Ava! She's always been such a powerful skater, it's so nice to see she's been able to harness that power. Fantastic skate.

Holy moly Isabeau, Lindsay and Amber have serious competition I think in Ava Marie. 130+ in the free program and I’ve been a fan of her since I first noticed her on the junior Grand Prix two seasons ago. She needs a bit more technical content but she really has it all if you ask me

Happy for Ziegler. But, it was officially a no 3-3 competition.

and? She straight out of juniors and already has Mariah Bell content technically. And I like her landings and flow out a lot. Can’t wait to see her progress. Like Mariah I think she expresses her music really well

Added a moment later, oh wait do you mean none of the competitors did a triple triple? OK now I got it

Yes, this was a very weak field, even for a Challenger. Her score today would have earned silver at US Classic & Nepela, and bronze at Nebelhorn, while she would have been just off the podium in 4th at Lombardia and 5th at Finlandia. It's still a very respectable score, even without a 3-3.

Do you think if USFSA had waited until today even though I know it’s way way too late they may have added Ava Marie to skate America?

Ja. Amazing, not one skater had one today. Oh well.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, Ava's mother Patricia Ziegler did make a final group of a U.S. Nationals w/Michelle Kwan, Nicole Bobek and Tonia Kwiatkowski.

Wait, if it's the same person, Patricia Mansfield was a coach at Ardmore, PA for a few years, I think we called her Tricia, she was fabulous!

Good for her if she has a daughter who is a great skater!

P.S. I am now recollecting that I heard about her daughter before...I just need to pay attention!

wowwwwww Back when a free program was actually a free program and you could have some originality and some unique movement. That was great. And how cool that Oksana Baiul in the American audience

I was watching some women’s gymnastics this past weekend on YouTube and so much of figure skating and then the beam and the uneven bars and the floor exercises everybody does the same exact stuff. No more unique dismount on uneven bars no more unique movements. And just like figure skating everyone does the same stuff including the same exact music now. I do miss when a free program was a free program.

90% of figure skaters end with two spins at the end of the program. I wish they would change the rules to include more freedom for the free state

And now this season in figure skating so many skaters are doing the triple jump into a double axle. Don’t think I need to see it from everybody. Just getting so repetitive and formulaic.

She was under Marked on technical and artistic.

Susanna Poykio reborn and I love it!

Extremely impressed with Ziegler. She has improved leaps and bounds since last year. To me, what was most amazing about Ziegler's long program in Budapest was how she attacked the program, did not hold back one iota, and actually performed the program for the full 4 minutes, unlike so many others who don't perform until the jumping passes are complete--what a concept! We need more skaters like her.

I'm looking forward to seeing her at Nationals and am hopeful she receives another Challenger assignment.

And now this season in figure skating so many skaters are doing the triple jump into a double axle.
I too wish the skaters had more freedom in the long program, but at least the triple/double axel sequence is more pleasing on the eyes than those awful step outs disguised as half loops.

Happy for Ziegler. But, it was officially a no 3-3 competition.
This is an antiquated way of looking at jump layouts. She completed six triple jumps and two double axels here. Without Trimetazidine-fueled Russians in the event, this level of content is competitive internationally. And god knows it's more than enough domestically.
