Nicolas Nadeau finished 6th in the Virtual Skate Canada Challenge behind Sadovsky, Nguyen, Corey Circelli (has one more year of ISU Junior age eligibility), Joseph Phan and Conrad Orzel. (Keegan Messing did not compete.)

If they end up using the Top 24 list in the usual manner, there'd be Italian ladies on the Grand Prix for the first time since Kostner left.

I’d also love to see Amber at Skate America! Decision on who to invite (3rd US lady at SkAm) will likely be made after Nebelhorn...we’ll know WHO went to Nebelhorn and how she performed.

I’m pretty sure that one of the three SkAm slots is for Bradie as US champ. Toyota is the main sponsor, so Alysa will likely be there, regardless of whether or not she’s sent to Nebelhorn & the results there.

Then there’s the 3rd - usually “tbd” - slot. If someone other than Alysa is sent to Nebelhorn & does amazingly well (such as Amber or Mariah), then that person will likely be the “tbd slot” at SkAm.

Chen is going to be the #4 pick by the GP feds based on her Worlds finish. I'm sure the USFS will consult with her prior to the GP meeting and let the other feds know what her preferences are. SkCan and IdF seem like reasonable bets.

Per haribobo's calculations, Amber is expected to wind up in the top 24 WS when those are recalculated, same with Starr, so neither of them will be in need of the SkAm host pick. Odds are strong that those will go to Alysa and Mariah, especially if they can't manage to pick up an invitation to a 2nd GP - hopefully CoC will invite one of them since they rarely use their 3 host picks for Chinese ladies (my guess would be Shan Lin gets one of the host spots and they thank the USFS for inviting her to SkAm this past fall by inviting either Bell or Liu).

Also, aren’t Challenger champs put on the alternate list? I can see a lot of the early Challengers packed with some of these skaters who are out of the top 24 due to the unusual 2020-21 season and its effect on the WS rankings.

I think it's always been June. The host countries "meet" (presumably virtual this year) and assignments are published a couple days after that. The latest ISU communication (the Challenger events announcement) says there is an ISU Council meeting on June 3...perhaps the GP selections will be tacked on to that.

The GP assignments for the last Olympic season were published in late May 2017. There is an ISU Grand Prix Coordination Group and I believe they organize the annual meeting that decides GP distribution and are separate from the ISU Council.

If the ISU is basing eligibility on having a Season's Best Score in the Top 75, then Nebelhorn and Budapest have become the key events of the 2020-21 season.

At the bottom, after the Top 75 (minus skaters who remain in juniors and skaters not competing for the season/opting out of GP). Although hosts ignore the order of the alternates list all the time.

If they (ISU) stick with Top 12 at Worlds for singles, and Top 24 SB and WS, only four US Men will be guaranteed GP spots, two each for Chen and Brown from Worlds Top 12, and one each for Pulkinen and Hiwatashi. Zhou is 25 in WS, but has no SB, and it's hard to imagine a scenario in which he isn't invited to SA, the only event in which he'd qualify for an invitation in the initial selection by the current rules.

I hope they do stick with Top 24 SB and WS guaranteed one: GP will look so, so different than it normally does, with the hosts and major Feds dominating everything in most years, and using OES skaters to fill out the first group, even when skaters high up the alternates list get nada.

There will be 72 spots to start, and under the last regular GP rules, some of these will go to:

• 18 host spots
• 24 guaranteed by Top 12 at 2021 Worlds
• 13 more guaranteed one from Top 24 SB
• 10 more guaranteed one from Top 24 WS

That's 65 spots right there, or seven open spots, but assuming that each host gives assignments to two skaters guaranteed at least one, that would leave another 12 spots open. So maybe 19 actually in play. But I suspect that the hosts will trade for second spots for those they are assigning to their own GPs and guaranteed one. And it doesn't count anyone else in the Top 75 -- right now, Top 44 -- who could be chosen in the initial selection.

The only skater from a host Fed who is on the SB list below 24 is Nam (30th), so maybe this year, winning an early CS might make a difference to the alternates list for singles. We've gone in circles about whether a [new] SB in the current season counts toward GP alternate assignments, but no discernable pattern has been perceived; for Zhou, winning a CS and getting an early alternates spot is probably his best bet, because USFS should have him queued up.

I don't see anyone who would qualify as a "Return" skater and is likely to return. Fernandez could for kicks and giggles, but why would he bother?

I mean, when is Demirboga or Zandron going to get a GP spot, unless being assigned by bypassing all of alternates list rules, let alone be guaranteed one, under the usual circumstances? Maybe Milyukov may have been invited to Rostelecom, as a BLR skater.

FWIW, I've heard late June is when the Grand Prix selection meeting is happening.

When I wrote up about GP looking at the US Men, I didn't even notice that 2018-19 was still on the list. The WS lists are still dated 27 March, which they always do at the end of the season, but before the next "current" season, they usually update it to drop three seasons prior (2018-19 in normal times) and to factor two seasons ago (2019-2020 in normal times) by 70%. I haven't done the math on that, if they are planning to publish a "beginning of 2021-22" WS list that works as in prior seasons.

Usually the ISU WS are updated by now, which is why I'm assuming the 2018-19 season's 70% points and 2019-20 points are being kept at 100%.

If they don't, and my Excel spreadsheet is right, Tanaka, Hiwatashi, and Brezina would drop from Top 24 WS and no longer be guaranteed a spot. Fa would drop, too, but he is #17 on the SB list and guaranteed one.

Mozalev, Selevko, and Sato would gain a guaranteed spot by climbing into Top 24 WS. Yan is #13 on the SB list, and should be guaranteed one.
