I don't recall a time where so many matches had an added time of 6+ minutes. Normally, 4 or 5 minutes is a lot. Thanks, VAR (not).

Australia don't play for another four hours. The last 24 hours have been non-stop hand-wringing by the Australian press about how we must play Cahill in this game.

On the one hand, as a soccer luddite, all I know is that when Cahill plays we usually score many goals, so, yes, play him. But on the other hand, I've said for years that it's time for the Socceroos to stand on their own two feet, that Cahill cannot rescue us for all time. So...

Well, I will be asleep as the match doesn't start til midnight here. I should say I do not care...but I find myself caring just a wee bit. So, go Socceroos! At the very least keep your destiny in your own hands.

Well played Peru. They came into this match having been eliminated already, but played well and managed to score a win.
France (as expected) and Denmark advance. I don't blame them for taking it easy today. Even if Australia had won, both teams would have advanced with a draw.

Group D will be craaay this afternoon.

I don't mind VAR. I only wish it was more clear how and when it is used. Something similar to tennis when you have a certain amount of challanges per set might work. If your challange is correct, you keep an attempt, if it is not, you lose it. But in tennis it is easier because basically there is only one rule relevant for the hawk eye (whether the ball touched the line or not). In football with all the different interpretations of fouls and fair play, it is a tiny bit more complicated.

Messi is looking much more comfortable this game - getting the goal has really relaxed him. Still they need a 2nd to try to put the game out of reach of Nigeria - who could still get an equalizer and eliminate Argentina!!

These final group games are intense when they matter - as last nights and tonight's have showed whereas the France Denmark game was dreadful earlier as neither team played for a result - it was more like a training game. I hope England Belgium actually play for a result!!

Likewise - but that is mainly because they insist on letting Maradona hang around still and I detest the man - he is just vile!! I actually quite like Messi!!

ETA: On 2nd thoughts I have gone off Messi after this comment from the BBC report:

Maradona is vile. My dislike is just that Argentina seems to have a superiority complex vs the rest of Latin America. Flama even had a skit about it. Of course, I would love to visit and personally all Argentines I've ever met are lovely. But it comes out in soccer and it's obnoxious.
