USFS and the judicial system are two different entities. USFS made that decision independently of any potential charges. Furthermore, there was very little evidence tying her to the conspiracy crime that could've been proven beyond a reasonable doubt. Sentencing for aggravated assault depends largely on the injury. Nancy was bruised, but no breaks and nothing permanent. That's why he would've served little time or probation. 20 years would never have happened.

Wow... she needed a better lawyer. Well obstruction charges are different than assault charges. She definately never would’ve 20 years. That’s just ridiculous. If she was charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated assault, I’d say a year in prison tops and 5 years probation. But the burden of proof just wasn’t there. With the right lawyer, she could’ve walked.

^i agree she never would have got 20years, I had assumed that suggestion was a joke. I was responding to the “never would have seen jail time” comment.

She probably was afraid of going to trial and having the rest of the group testify against her and then with the evidence presented including the note and other things, she probably didn’t want to leave it to a jury to decide whether they found her guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
I’m assuming there was an indictment. If there was then a grand jury already decided that the evidence gathered against her established probable cause for prosecution to go forward with their charges.

Tonya was planning to turn pro after 94 Olympics if the whack hadn't happened. She might of gone to worlds depending on Olympic results ( I believe she would of medalled if there had been no whack, and Kwan should of been the 2nd person on the Olympic team and would of placed top 10 at 13).
I never thought much of Nancy's skating (too stiff, too slow, too wooden, she looked like she hated doing it as well, I didn't like the hold the leg spiral, and her spins were not as good as the other ladies). I didn't find Nancy elegant either ( skating was slow and choppy). I also resented that Nancy would get medals for poor performances ( 92 Olympics- Tonya and Surya should of both placed ahead of her, 93 worlds free, and she had one of the worst national championship winning performances in 93. Tonya won 91 and 94 nationals skating her best, Kristi won 92 nationals skating her best, and Nancy was gifted the 93 national title despite skating the worst of the top 7.

Sentencing is often different for women than it is for men. I’ve seen a woman get six years for murdering the father of her child, right in front of his mother! If it wasn’t for the hoopla surrounding her at the time, the DA would’ve kicked out a better deal. But they were under pressure to go after her, apparently. Either her lawyer folded on her, or maybe she just panicked. But ordinarily, I never would expect jail time for this.

The NCAA is "stretching" the rules for Arike Ogumbowale's appearance. She's allowed to compete and keep the money she earns because they determined the money would be from her dancing talent and not her basketball fame. However, she's not allowed to appear in promotions for the show which they determined would be using her "fame". That's why she wasn't with the group at GMA or on the latest ads for the show. I suspect the NCAA wanted this opportunity to help highlight women's collegiate basketball on primetime tv and found some way to make an exception.

I have so many things I’d love to say about the NCAA, but I’ll keep it to this. If a player has so many contractual agreements that refrain her from even showing up in promotions for a show, then technically that means she’s acting as an employee they can afford to pay her.
Tonya's lawyer was her coach's husband. I suspect Tonya ran out of funds to pay him and that's why he convinced her to take the plea, and she was wore out from being hounded by the media day and night and wanted to live her life in peace. I don't think she expected to be shut out of the pro comps and tours . Collins and Hamilton succeeded in blackballing her (which was very wrong of them ). Ice Capades should of been open to her, but Hamill wouldn't hire her after she plead to the felony ( and since she had no prior record it really should of been a misdemeanor). Hamill did buy her rink and was going to set up with some type of job there though, but unfortunately Hamill went bankrupt and Pat Robertson ended up buying ice capades. I would of much rather seen Tonya than Charlene Von Saher as the "star" skater though. Charlene did skate better a few years later at our local club (they also used the full hockey-sized ice as opposed to Robertson's tiny patch of ice (they could of used the full hockey rink and didn't- the 2001 ice capades did use the full rink in Dayton (2nd and middle show- bankrupt after the 3rd).
That explains everything. It’s amazing. Many high profile cases attract lawyers, who will work free of charge so they can get their names out in public. Of course those are either murder cases, which this wasn’t.

Tonya’s criminal defense attorney was not her coach’s husband. That was Bob Weaver, a prominent Oregon attorney. They had Tonya nailed on hindering. (Photos with Jeff at Shawn's House post Whack, admittedly lying to the FBI...) It was Patrice Brisebois. I loved so many of the performances of Marie-France Dubreuil with her partners too (I remember Stéphane Richer and Claude Lemieux). Katia and Val were amazing - it reminded me of how magical she was skating pairs. I'm still bitter over the Harper CBC cuts for us losing that show.

but I actually just saw her 95 Nationals LP for the first time and was shocked at how good it is! She actually looks really fast, interesting choreography and element layout, and so much attack throughout. She skated with so much more abandon here than I can ever recall—really wish she could have maintained this style the next few seasons.

I wish she would have actually jumped throughout her career rather than just do perfect jump entrances!
She did not land that 3F in the 1995 Nationals LP simply because she did not get deep into the knee and actually jump!
ETA: When Tonia does the 3LP in the 1995 Nationals LP all I can hear is Uncle Dick doing a little laugh while Midori Ito does a 3T-3T.

Tonia K's skating improved greatly after she finished college. I wish she would of omitted the 3 salchow attempt in the 98 nationals free, and landed the 3 flip there. She probably would still of came in 4th since Bobek skated well at 98 nationals . I suspect Tonia K would not have missed every single jump in the Olympics like Nicole did if she had went, although she had a few disasters in her career as well. Nicole skating her best might have medalled in 98, instead she skated her worst and ended up 17th or so (missing every jump in the short, and most of the jumps in the long). Tonia K probably would of made the top 10 with 2 clean skates but definitely wouldn't of been in the mix for the medals.
Tonia K is also tiny live as well. She skated the local club show - 95 while still elgible, at the start of her pro career, and a few years later (she was mainly coaching by that point but still did a nice exhibition number minus the difficult elements she had earlier in her career).

Yes. Superficially I really liked her hair and costumes this season as well. By 98 her costumes and hair were so conservative and just so old. She was like 27 years old and hot, why was she dressing like twice her age?!
I also found this interview she did with GoldenSkate interesting. She seems completely oblivious to her obsession with haircutters, which kind of makes me love her even more.
I was hoping for some good gossip about how bitchy Slutskaya or Butyrskaya (ok, probably more likely Maria) were, but we got a lame Midori Ito story instead.

Tonya Quietkowski is the most elequent speaker even in skating comments! My wife and I re-new our prescription to Icy Network every year because the video quality is dependable, but Tonya makes it a special bonus, her voice really makes our juice's flow!

Yes true. I agree, most honestly. But you must admit that Yuko Cowagucci was brave to continue to compete in skating till her 98th bday. Even Ashley Wagner might not make it that long before she hangs up her facial's.

Yes, the best (worst?
) part about this show, besides the terrible skating, was the ensuing affair between Kristy and Lloyd during his wife's pregnancy, that resulted in Kristy's pregnancy, arrest for assault of Lloyd's wife, Lloyd's divorce from Marcie and re-marriage to Kristy. I was just watching Kristy and Lloyd's "Cribs" episode the other day. Believe it or not, they are still together. Kristy is still acting and was recently on a Hallmark movie.
