Skaters who return to old programs or have new programs created for Natl Championships/Worlds/OLYs

Anyway, I'm not sure how the Nutcracker Tour could have been a scandal. :) o_O

Nicole Bobek skated in the Nutcracker on Ice Tour despite having an injured ankle, then she withdrew from Nationals after the SP and petitioned onto the World Team. The petition was denied . . . which allowed Tara Lipinski to skate at Worlds and get grandfathered in before age restrictions applied.

Thank you because I didn't know or probably didn't remember that Nicole skated in the tour with her ankle injured. My long memory isn't as good as it used to be for medical reasons. Some things I have no trouble remembering, but some things I don't remember at all.

I sure wish she wouldn't have done that tour then. She would have probably been better off allowing her ankle to heal so she didn't have to withdraw. I do remember her withdrawing, but I didn't remember why.

Todd, Nicole, Peggy and Brian Orser starred in the cast, and I totally loved it. I guess I'm a little confused by the tour being a scandal. Do you mean that it hindered Todd by not placing 1st or something regarding the 96 Nationals? He did place 1st at 1996 Worlds, and I thought he was amazing!

His Triple Alex/Triple Toe Loop combination was superb and clean. At least I thought it was. Sort of confused on that.

Simone, thanks for the link to "First Knight." I appreciate that Peter Carruthers explained the reason for the change in free skate music for that season.

It is interesting to consider how this impacted not only Tara and Michelle but also Bobek and Kwiatkowski. Had Nicole not toured and healed then she could have been an Olympic Bronze or even Silver contender and Tonia could have gone to the Olympics.

... But you know, Tara was rewarded for being prepared and you have to respect that!

I'm pretty sure a clean Bobek would have won bronze in 98 regardless of what happened in 95/Tara getting grandfathered in. It was a major drop off after Tara and Michelle.

I think a clean Lulu could have held off Nicole.

Also, it is conceivable that Maria could have summoned a performance of Otonal comparable to her 1999 Worlds performance to hold off Nicole since Maria was skating the same program.

I understand that, but you said she could have been a bronze contender when she actually already was.

I thought Tara would have been age eligible by Nagano, but she wouldn't have been able to compete at 1997 Worlds if she wasn't grandfathered in at 1996 Worlds. Am I wrong or right about that?

Yes, that's correct. She was born June 10, 1982, so she would have been 15 before July 1, 1997.

And IIRC it was a 13-12 vote to allow Lipinski to be the third entry in 1996. Crazy to think how one vote could have very much re-written history in that (and potentially the next) Olympic cycle.

The 1994 Olympic title, 1995 World title (and Kwan's bronze by virtue of the short program), 1997 World title (short program) and 1998 Olympic bronze all came down to one vote. In hindsight, those decisions weren't actually that hard (to me).
