Skaters who return to old programs or have new programs created for Natl Championships/Worlds/OLYs

Elvis used the same Long Program for 3 straight olympics (94,98 and 2002)

Several weeks ago, I could have sworn he used Dragon in 1998 and had to go back to see for myself.
I remember some versions of the "Ghost in the Darkness" program where he had an awful lot of standing around in one place.

US dance champions Elizabeth Punsalan and Jerod Swallow debuted a brand new tango free dance at the 1998 Olympics. They finished 7th, but many felt they were underscored.

They were definitely underscored. I had them either 2nd or 3rd in the free dance behind G&P and maybe A&P.

Part of that was they didn't have a lot of momentum going into the Olympics. It was interesting because at the 1997 Worlds, they finished 6th and almost beat Anissina & Peizerat in the free dance.

Moniotte & Lavanchy changed their OD between Europeans and Worlds in 1995. They were apparently ordered to.

I once read that Grishuk & Platov almost ditched Memorial Requiem in favour of The Feeling Begins because Grishuk couldn't stand Memorial Requiem (both the music and the program in general). They debuted Memorial Requiem at the 1997 Trophee Lalique but it was reworked after they got feedback from the judges.

In 1991-1992, G&P changed their OD music. Most of the choreography stayed the same except for a few moments here and there. I actually kind of liked the first one a bit better.

Denkova & Staviski reworked their Afrah Baladi program in 2002-2003, changing some of the choreography and music cuts partway through the season.

And in 2000-2001, Drobiazko & Vanagas had a tango FD but by Worlds they ditched it for their 99-00 free dance Spente La Spelle.

Stéphane Lambiel quite often changed programs mid season.
He changed "The Truman Show" FS to "King Arthur" just before Worlds 2005, and won with it his first title (they started working on it during the AOI tour, beginning of February)
He changed "Malaguena"SP to "Dralion" which he premiered at Olympics 2006 in Turin, medalled with it there and won his second Worlds title later.
He also changed his SP in the next season from "Geissel Drama" SP to "The Blood Diamond", which was performed only once, at Worlds 2007.
During his last season he came after after injury and didn't have time to prepare two programs, so he has new SP and old "Otoño Porteño" FS (was prepared towards season 2008 but he retired after that and performed it in shows), they still felt this program is not good enough for Olympics, so they changed it to "La Traviata" towards Euros.

Gracie in the 2014 Olympic season had a SP Three Preludes by Gershwin choreographed by Marina Zueova complete with screechy violins but once Frank took over he and Lori came up with a new SP BY Grieg and she debuted her new program at Nationals and won her first US title and then finished 4th in Sochi. For usually being a nervous skater how Gracie skated as well as she did with all the pressure of making the team and not wanting to let her the sponsors down to go out and skated almost totally clean and dominate like she did showed some real guts that i wish we saw more of.

I thought she showed more guts handling that musically and choreographically dense program that Zoueva gave her vs the watered down standard American girl pretty music Lori gave her...but.... * shrug *

Petrenko recycled his 1991 and 1992 Carmen short for 1994 Olympics.

What's worse is that he also kept recycling the same costume/theme, which was first used by him in the 1988 Olympic long to Don Quixote I believe.

Todd Eldredge had skated to "Chess" @ 1995 Skate America (and won the comp.), but changed to "First Knight" a little later in the 1995-1996 season, and the rest is history (1996 World Champion)! :cheer2::encore:

It was not that smooth.

Todd did lose 1996 US Nationals to Rudy Galindo despite being the overwhelming favorite.

And also, he started the season by going back to his 1993 King & I short program, but by the second half of the season he had reverted to the 1995 season Swing Kids SP.

So two different new freeskates and two different old short programs that season.

I'm now remembering how at the 1992 Worlds, Tony Harding had completely new programs, both short and long. To have 2 brand new programs just weeks after the Olympics probably wasn't the best idea. IIRC, she gave poor performances at those Worlds.

And in 2002-2003, Chait & Sakhnovsky ditched their Lord of the Rings free dance by the time Worlds came around for an older free dance (I think the one they skated in either 2000 or 2001).

She did not skate well at those worlds, but I thought the changes to the LP were great. Sticking with selections from the Robin Hood soundtrack instead of the Robin Hood + who even knows what else mishmash that she had before created a much more cohesive program.

The Moon River SP wasn’t her style at all, but again it seemed to be a legitimate attempt at a more complete choreographic piece.

I really liked Tonya Harding's programs at the 1992 worlds, and the "Moon River" costume was one of her prettiest.

I don't think Robin Hood was ever skated to it's full potential, which is a shame.

Let's not forget that Ashley Wagner dropped her dirge of a "Romeo and Juliet" program in 2014 after Nationals.

Did Todd Eldredge always have his "Gettysburg" program in 1998?

Did Todd Eldredge always have his "Gettysburg" program in 1998?

Actually, he first skated to "Gettysburg" in the 1994/1995 season. He returned to a reworked "Gettysburg" in the 1997/1998 season. By the time 1998 Worlds came around, he returned to "First Knight." I'm guessing that he returned to "First Knight" because of the memories of what happened with him @ the 1998 Nagano Olympics with "Gettysburg" (OK, I cried my eyes out over that one, and have only watched that Olympic competitive performance once)? Anyway, all ended well for him @ those Worlds (silver medal overall & he won the free skate :cheer2:).

After struggling with his gorgeous Glenn Gould program, Jeff Buttle returned to a reworked Samson & Delilah for the 06 O's, where he came 2nd in the LP and won the bronze medal (missing the silver by less than 4 points - essentially his popped loop).

Also, maybe not the intention of the thread, but didn't Elvis opt to do his 94 LP (or a version of it) for the 02 season for his O's 'swan song'?

Stojko actually revived two old programs for 2002: He revived his Koodo drums SP from 98 for the 2001-02. I think he wanted his Swan Song to be like “The best of Stojko” by reusing two of his favourite programs.

Meno/Sand revived their Fantasie Impromptu SP that they used for the past two seasons for the 98 Worlds after a disappointing showing at the Olympics. They used their Turandot LP which they used for two seasons for their LP that year

Sadly, he skated both programs better in previous outings. To me, it was more like 'the end of Stojko'. And I say this as one who ubered Elvis. It was good to see him finally move on, and then return to the skating world after a long hiatus in Mexico. He seems very happy today with his wife and his dogs - they are very involved in dog rescue :cheer2:- and with being able to give back to the sport.

It made me sad to see him skate the free in 2002, even though I was a big fan. He just looked so worn-out, although it wasn't a terrible skate.

OMG I completely forgot about Meno & Sand and Turandot.

Talk about trotting out the old warhorse over and over.

However, it was a beautiful program and the ombre costumes exquisite.

A lot of Kaori hate, but let's not forget she is a solid, solid competitor and the reigning World Jr. bronze medalist. She's been competing against the Russians for a long time.

Her jumps are huge, maybe the biggest among the Japanese ladies. The SP is wonderful for her. FS, not so much.

I think she's probably 4th or 5th in the pecking order, but assuming Miyahara retires this season along with Hongo, and Honda's (relative) inconsistency, she could be a mainstay on the team for years to come, with the right programs.

I think she could do well with powerful music, or even comedy (her SP last season was charming). I wouldn't count out Yuna Shiraiwa, either. It's really a shame they only have two berths.

I think you meant to post this in another thread. :)

Miki Ando did this alot :drama:

2004/05: Originally used "Guitar Concerto" for her LP, but (thankfully) went back to her previous LP to Firebird after Nats for 2005 Worlds.

2006: Started with a My Funny Valentine LP > ditched it for Madame Butterfly for the Olympics. Neither programme was great.

2007/08: She started with a Samson & Delilah SP, but went back to her old Schez SP in attempting to defend her World title.

2008/09: Had a Giselle LP at the same time as Nakano. She then had a (much better) Saint-Saens LP for GPF/Worlds (bronze at Worlds)

2010/11: She apparently had a "Nuttin' But Stringz" SP (I don't remember said programme at all) which she'd dumped for Gabriel's Oboe by the GPF.

From 1983 - 1987, Tiffany Chin used to mix and match segments of her short program and free skates.

I guess it was an 80s thing, to have 700 different music cuts in the one program.

What about ice dance in 98-99? Didn’t loads of teams do their OD to Masquerade Waltz in the GP series and then because they all had the same music every single team changed it so by Worlds no one did Masquerade Waltz? :D Can’t remember exactly which teams but I do remember Lang/Tchernyshev and Anissina/Peizerat were two of them.

Haha I don't remember. I mostly remember B&K's OD to Seachran from that season.

Ah, the famous “nutcracker tour” scandal of 96! Trip down memory lane :summer:
Todd, Nicole, Peggy and Brian Orser starred in the cast, and I totally loved it. I guess I'm a little confused by the tour being a scandal. Do you mean that it hindered Todd by not placing 1st or something regarding the 96 Nationals? He did place 1st at 1996 Worlds, and I thought he was amazing!

His Triple Alex/Triple Toe Loop combination was superb and clean. At least I thought it was. Sort of confused on that.

1996 Worlds - Todd Eldredge

Anyway, I'm not sure how the Nutcracker Tour could have been a scandal. :) o_O
