Hurricane Maria

San Juan mayor: "I am going to do what I never thought I would do. I am begging, begging anyone who can hear us to save us from dying.

Clearly the US is unwilling to provide adequate assistance despite the fact that these are US citizens. The international community needs to step up immediately. Canada must find a way to do more than we currently are - this is a major humanitarian crisis.

After this, the US should not complain about other countries doing bad things to their citizens. The US government is waving its hands and letting the Puertorican people die.

This infuriates me.

It sounds like they're doing well with supplies getting to San Juan but running short on the various ways to get them out to the people who are suffering the most. I gather that the rural areas are cut off so badly from SJ that getting things out there is their biggest challenge. Hopefully someone on the ground gets the supplies to the people who need them most ASAP. I'm so heartbroken for all those people. :fragile:

I will never cruise with anyone but Royal Carribbean after hearing about all the things they've done through this whole hurricane season. The ship that's taking supplies throughout PR and the USVI right now (Adventure of the Seas) is the ship I sailed on last summer and I loved that crew so much. They were outstanding in how much they wanted to help everyone be comfortable and taken care of during my trip. I'm sure they're making such a big difference down there and that makes me very happy. :)

@Jimena I am SOOOO glad that you're all right!! I've been wondering about you. Sending good thoughts and prayers your way as you continue to navigate an insane situation. *HUGS* :(

CNN reporter Dr. Sanjay Gupta tried to get medicines for a hospital himself. He got little help from the Department of Health and Human Services but did from a small U.S. based charity run by volunteers. Medical personnel on the island has taken it upon themselves to go in search of the supplies they need. So if they and reporters can do that why can't FEMA and others nine days after the hurricane hit get supplies to those who need it?

Trump has attacked the mayor of San Juan Carmen Cruz saying "they want everything done for them" and "she was told by the Democrats to be nasty to Trump" and accusing her of poor leadership. This man has no empathy, shame or an once of humanity in him. Or the ability to know when to keep his mouth shut.

What a fcuking SHITBAG. Tweeted as he spends the day on his luxury golf resort.

What infuriates me is knowing that lives are and will be lost following the hurricane because of Trump's slow, meandering response. Also he tweets as if Puerto Ricans are not fellow Americans. Did he talk about Texas debt after Houston was hit? Texas is us. And so is Puerto Rico. Only Trump doesn't seem to understand that. Also there are some fat cat hedge fund managers who lobbied against Puerto Rico loans to help restructure their debt because they would not profit if the Puerto Ricans received the same consideration as other Americans in the States. It would be decent of them to chip in just now. In case Trump thinks he is doing a great job there is this comparison from the Washington Post:
"After an earthquake shattered Haiti’s capital on Jan. 12, 2010, the U.S. military mobilized as if it were going to war.

Before dawn the next morning, an Army unit was airborne, on its way to seize control of the main airport in Port-au-Prince. Within two days, the Pentagon had 8,000 American troops en route. Within two weeks, 33 U.S. military ships and 22,000 troops had arrived. More than 300 military helicopters buzzed overhead, delivering millions of pounds of food and water.

No two disasters are alike. Each delivers customized violence that cannot be fully anticipated. But as criticism of the federal government’s initial response to the crisis in Puerto Rico continued to mount Thursday, the mission to Haiti — an island nation several hundred miles from the U.S. mainland — stands as an example of how quickly relief efforts can be mobilized.

By contrast, eight days after Hurricane Maria ripped across neighboring Puerto Rico, just 4,400 service members were participating in federal operations to assist the devastated island, an Army general told reporters Thursday. In addition, about 1,000 Coast Guard members were aiding the efforts. About 40 U.S. military helicopters were helping to deliver food and water to the 3.4 million residents of the U.S. territory, along with 10 Coast Guard helicopters."

Hillary would have responded quickly. Now it seems that most of us find ways to work around that disgusting idiot to try and help.

Many are helping except Trump and he is going to take credit for it.
We will remember. Puerto Rico will remember. Charlottesville will remember. Trump will leave so many bad memories in his wake. Historically he will get what he deserves. But that doesn't help us now. I hope someone else can take the reins, stay in San Juan and make a difference.

I am wondering if Puerto Rico can appeal to the UN?

I think they are being treated poorly because they have no voting power in the presidential election. It's all political without any basic human compassion.

I watched the emotional plea for help by the San Juan mayor multiple times. How can Trump and FEMA say that everything is fine?

Watching Trump be Trump from Puerto Rico: I don't care. He is what he is. I didn't expect anything better from him. You bet that if this had happened a year ago, things would've been so different.

The Mayor of San Juan has been great. She's a friend of my family and went to school with my brother. She's working extremely hard to help.

Two days ago, I went to the supermarket and the aisles were empty. It seemed obvious that the distribution chain was completely broken. It was all so overwhelming.

Then yesterday, I went to get gas, went to another supermarket, managed to get cash and actually attended a work meeting. I felt so accomplished. And today, I stood in line for 3 hours and got diesel and we are cooking spaghetti! And my brother and his wife came from Ponce and visited today. They're completely incommunicated down in the south. He's a cardio-thoracic surgeon and hasn't been able to work because of the lack of electricity and unreliability of the diesel supply at the hospital. They also have an agricultural farm with an entertainment center that they rent out for weddings, etc. It was completely destroyed. We have had that farm in my family for over 50 years. Hopefully, we can rebuild.

My daughter re-starts pre-school on Monday. Without electricity. I will start work the same day. We have a generator and a reliable source of diesel. I'm craving normalcy like crazy.

The rest of the island is nowhere near returning to their routines. I am lucky.

Jimena,

Thanks for the update. Sorry about the farm. There must be some comfort in knowing that you and your family are safe. I hope things improve there soon, with international and individual help. TBH I had expected Trump to do something to help PR because FEMA had helped Houston and Florida. I am afraid he will show up next week for photo ops and to tell the people here how great everything is over there.

Take care and keep us in the loop.

ETA- I really like the mayor of San Juan.

He claims that the response of his administration has been "great"; and that Maria has not been a catastrophe for Puerto Rico compared to Katrina; because, thus far, only 16 people have died.

Only 5 percent of the island has power; and 47 percent potable water.
Never mind the mass destruction; and continuing lack of the goods and services that make daily like possible.

What a fool!

They are now sharing film of him tossing toilet paper and other items to a crowd; after the Governor thanks him for coming!

Dr. Sanjay Gupta is pointing out that the President was taken to a more affluent area near San Juan where the damage to the infrastructure isn't as bad as in outlying areas.
He says that the long-term effects of people being without water, food, medicine, electricity, etc. are yet to be known.
It will take months to appreciate that.
