Last few weekends were a treat, with seeing programs for the first time.
I find Latin mostly dismal so far, with few exceptions.
Virtue/Moir- though I think I prefer Prince SD, their Latin is not far off. I think Hotel California section loses a bit of energy, but overall- phenomenal. A program I will rewatch and find new things every time.
OTOH, I did not like "MR", and I tried, rewatching it multiple times. The skills and connection cannot be denied, but I have problems with the concept. It starts strong (though I would cut out all the little Tessa movements in the beginning- they worked for Prince and Latin, and now are getting redundant). "Roxanne", love it or hate it, is a powerful song. But then I feel that both the storytelling and musical quality fizzles. "MR" the original, though it is not my thing, was fresh, eclectic, camp. To take it in all seriousness with very mediocre music and the storyline going basically from "Roxanne" to the heroine's death rings hollow to me. Maybe if they revamp the middle and make the "love story" stronger, I'll buy into it. The choreo for the last minute is effective (and illustrative), but middle is lacking. And I do not know if they can get the full effect with the music they have.
Gilles/Poirier. I just love them. They won me over throughout the years for being so different (and good enough to be different!). Hope they skate another Olympic cycle. I was smiling all throughout their SD. Maybe my favorite.
W/P. I've loved them for years. I hope to be wrong, but I think they went the wrong way. Their all-out sincerity and originality always stood out. I loved their Phantom, MR, Malade, Seasons. But "Spartacus" just brings Domnina/Shabalin to mind, and they did it better. "Spartacus" is balletic and mainstream; I think it does not play into W/P's strength. They are the ones who need to repeat MR. I hope to be wrong, but I worry.
I find Bobrova/Soloviev's SD unwatchable (literally. I started like 4 times and could not get past the first minute. Finally watched it and the dance misses musical accents and feels like such a chore for everybody), and their FD really strong, the one I look forward to rewatching over and over. If Zhulin wants them to be relevant, he better rework that SD, because the FD is competitive with the best.
Love H/D's FD. As for SD- I want to see how it develops; it could be stronger musically. It is all built on rhythm, but then H/D are such strong personalities and skaters, they can compensate. The more they play it to the rafters, the more it'll shine.
