The Dance Hall, Part 4: To Helsinki & Back -- Seeking Rhumba Magic ...

Is there any news about Elena Ilinykh ? Last I remember was some kind of confusion whether she had retired to try coaching or she might get a new partner and just experience coaching on the side.

She teamed up with Anton Shibnev and they will be at the Russian test skates this weekend.

Thanks. I'm not familiar with him, is he any good ? From the pictures, they're both very attractive so there's that. Hopefully, we'll get to see some videos from the test skate.

He is Vasilisa Davankova`s former partner. According to his fskate.ru page he used to be a single skater and switched to ice dance in the 2012/2013 season. He never had any notable success with his former partners, but none of them were as good as Elena of course. We will see, I guess. At least Elena can continue skating.

Maybe. Ka3sha says, though, that Ilinykh & Shibnev are probably not having an open skate. (They've only been together a short while after all).

Here is Davankova & Shibnev's free skate from Russian Nationals last season.

I watched it at the time, but all I remember thinking was that she was the more interesting skater. They finished fifth at Universiade behind Nazarova & Nikitin, Evdokimova & Bazin, Koch & Nuechtern, and Mueller & Dieck. And above Chen & Zhao and Kuzmichova & Sinicyn. The Universiade performances might be out there somewhere, but I believe Russian Nationals was probably the better performance for D&S in any case.

I don't know that an explanation has been posted. My guess is that he was propelled by a desire to finish higher than 5th at Universiade.

(My mother says it was probably because his partner was sleeping with their coach;)).

So who do people think will be the 'breakouts' of this season?
I mean more broadly, who will move up in the stands (even close-to-the-top skaters).

Will any of the newly seniors or another under the radar team have a P/C like rise in the rankings or the top 10 is pretty much set?

Where will Coomes/Buckland fit in?

The picture will be clearer after we see programs/shape of the teams in the Challenger events, but it's fun to discuss now blindly before we see anything :)

I have the feeling Stepanova/Bukin have been close to that for a few seasons and with Bobrova/Soloviev retiring it should be soon clear who's the new leader in Russia. I think they had promising material at the beginning of last season but somehow didn't grow much throughout the season and remained a bit messy. So they could be a surprise this year.

I think (wish ;) - I'm totally biased here) the time has come for Hubbell/Donohue to step up to be the top US team :kickass:. International judges at Worlds have shown that they are ready to give them top marks, they 'just' need to be consistent and avoid costly mistakes. SD latin style I think will play to their advantage and the FD music choice sounds promising as well.

Coomes/Buckland is the team I wonder the most about because they had such a wonderful 2016 Worlds showing that I think they could have made a statement last season. I still think they can this season.

As for my own biased opinion, I also think it's time for H/D to live up to their potential and be more of a challenger. That said, my own biases also wants me to think the Shibs will step it up and be more a sure-thing for a medal and maybe be in a better position than last season to cement their medal status internationally.

I agree. I think this could be H/D's year if they just keep their nerves in check and don't make any silly mistakes. SD-wise, the rhumba pattern is something that they can do. At Nice, they were the only team along with the Pechalat/Bourzat who got level fours in both patterns. They have the techinical abilities. If that mishap at worlds didn't happen, they would've left with a medal and that must be driving them so much, it's Olympic season, they have the goods, everybody loves an underdog story.

Get those kinks out at Senior Bs and ride the momentum.

Would also love for the Parsons to get a second GP assignment and to usher in the 'new generation' with M/C.

Zhiganshina/Gaszi did as well. :)

I think every team who competed that season should be working very hard on that rhumba pattern. Very few level 4 calls and a generous amount of negative GOEs given even for the ones given level 4. V/M escaped with no negative GOEs but no level 4s. From what I saw of them at HPC, V/M really upped their game with the rhumba pattern.

So, how many male ice dancers do you think we'll be seeing wear black long-sleeves? I wonder how many of them will go sleeveless like this

Who does the ice dance tech coaching in Canton these days?

I thought this website would be helpful, but it really wasn't: http://internationalskatingacademy.com/coaches/

I think Scali was hired to help make up the tech void after Igor left with Epstein and Johnny Johns handling the tech aspects as well. I'm sure they all specialize in different areas of ice dance tech since there's so much to it.

Here's an interview with Carreira/Ponomarenko where they talk about how their training works with Igor in Novi:

Shpilband seemed to be a natural fit for the team since they had already worked with him part-time with their previous partners. As their main coach, he mostly works with them on the technical elements and choreography.

“Rohene Ward also works on our choreography and adds polish,” Carreira added. “Fabian Bourzat helps us create new lifts and works on our skating skills, Adrienne Lenda on our technical elements, Greg Zuerlein on the compulsory dances, footwork, and skating skills. We also have Gyrotonic classes and ballet with Veronique Breen, and Aaron Stickler is our trainer.”

“We also do acrobatics with Oleg Ouchakov and ballroom with Oksana Zolotarevskaya,” offered Ponomarenko.

I really don't wanna jinx it, but YES PLEASE! MAKE IT HAPPEN! It's gonna take consistent perfection for them to get there, but it's gonna be soooooo worth it :cheer2:

Super agree!!!!!!! H/D as the #1 US team going into the Olympics will be a dream come true!!! Could you imagine them competing and winning a medal at the team event??? :biggrinbo :cheer:

Are they going to pantomime it? Averbukh has seriously questionable taste.
LOL  Averbukh might not be known as the best choreographer in the business, but I have faith in Elena's abilities and I hope that this new pairing will be able to deliver or perform with great skill.

Russian Test Skates Alert:
Apparently, Elena and Anton are doing a Spartacus FD choreographed by Averbukh! I really, really can't wait to see these new programs...:rofl::rofl:
SOURCE
To say the truth, the source says that Averbukh didn't choreograph it, he just helped them with some details ;)
