Just got back from watching Wonder Woman and LOVED it! I think it is on par with Captain America 1 and for sure it is the best offering from the DCEU so far. If I have any criticism is that at times the lower budget of the movie showed in the special effects but that's being picky. I will definitely be seeing it in cinemas again but I wasn't as floored by WW as I thought I would be. 7.5 out of 10.
 
I watched The Brothers Bloom last night. It stars Adrien Brody and Mark Ruffalo as brothers (not identical twins in case you were wondering) who are con artists who re-united with newly-wealthy Rachel Weisz as their mark. Three bucks to whoever guess that one of them falls in love with her. :lol: Interestingly (but unsuccessfully), Brody and Ruffalo are cast against type with Ruffalo being the uber-slick master-mind (he'll always sound like a pothead to me! :lol:) and Brody as the shy, insecure one. When the movie is in full-on caper mode (with Weisz joining the gang to work on various jobs), the movie is watchable. When the movie slows down for more intimate moments, it kind of comes to a stand-still. Which is weird, because if the movie was just a straight-ahead drama/romance, Brody and Weisz could get the job done very well. But this movie is a caper and a comedy and a romance and a drama. The writer/director Rian Johnson just took on too much. The movie cost 20 million and made only five million worldwide. Johnson only made one more movie (Looper) then was cast out of the movie world, only showing up to direct a few episodes of Breaking Bad. And then nothing. Although imdb.com says he has some sci-fi flick coming out in December, something about a Jedi, apparently the final Jedi or something like that. Poor guy, this sounds like the end of him! :P ;)
 
Wonder Woman was absolutely amazing! So, so good. There are a few moments that felt really cheesy, but overall it has such sincerity. I'll admit I teared up several times lol.

I'm going to try to see it again tomorrow! :)

Didn't see Wonder Woman but did see a few others this weekend.

20th Century Women - with Annette Bening and Billy Crudup. I enjoyed it. Annette Bening is really good as always and I liked the other characters.

And the Band Played On - watched this one on Youtube last night. The story about the discovery of the AIDS virus and the people who were trying to work out what was going on. A massive cast of well known actors. Very good.

Today at my local cinema they had a James Bond double in honour of Roger Moore. So saw The spy who loved me and For your eyes only. Two of his best Bond movies. Good fun seeing them on the big screen. Ate too much ice cream.
 
During my recent trip a raid, I watched La La Land for the third time. Enjoyed the songs, but watching Emma Stone, I kept wondering- she won the best actress Oscar for This? She did well with what that role needed, which wasn't much, IMO. Smile, sing, dance. Any actress could have done well in that role.
 
i watched The Sound of Music this weekend. It was important to me because during my recent visit to Salzburg I saw some of the locations used in the movie. It was great to recognize them on my TV screen.
 
Emma Stone did quite a bit with that role. Her crying audition scene felt authentic, even though it was a comedic scene. She is so very charismatic, yet I buy her as a girl next door type.

Same for Ryan Gosling. I am sure he could have pulled off the Affleck role in that dreadful Manchester movie. But Affleck doing LA LA Land? Doubt it.

I am kinda flabbergasted when people think someone like Emma Watson could pull it off. I like her a lot, but really? Or just anyone could have done it. There is a reason the romantic comedy is basically gone from cinema. It is damn hard to do well.

The Lovers - acting was good, parts entertaining, well made, but it was almost too real, intimate.
I really felt like a fly on the wall, but in an uncomfortable way. Tracy Letts And Debra Winger were Fab. And I love that Letts is younger than Winger
It is not for everyone, but I am glad I saw it.

Paris Can Wait. Do not see this movie unless you eat first. Good movie, not great. lovely scenery,some nice moments. Diane Lane was good, but thought Artaud Viard was the best. Wait to see on cable.
 
I'm not sure that Black Widow will ever get her own movie but the MCU is coming out with a Captain Marvel movie followed by an Ant Man & Wasp movie in the next couple years.
 
More good news for Wonder Woman from the international box office! :cheer2:

In addition to the historic $100.5 million that Warner Bros. and DC Comics’ latest lassoed in at the domestic box office, international grosses at 55 markets accounted for $122.5 million this weekend, giving the movie a global opening of $223 million.

The international numbers are higher than many other super hero films including the first two “Thor” and “Iron Man” movies, both “Guardians of the Galaxy” volumes, and “Man of Steel.”

China powered the international sales with $38 million, the fourth largest opening of all time for a Warner Bros. film. Korea brought in $8.5 million in earnings, followed closely behind by Mexico ($8.4 million) and Brazil ($8.3 million). The film also showed strong in the U.K. where it earned $7.5 million.

It's been quite a while since Debra Winger was a film lead or a least a main supporting. The Ranch starts its second season on Netflix soon as well. Looks like she's back to doing more projects again (perhaps making up for lost time?).

They looked into the four acting categories, specially the following minority groups, and compared them to the most recent U.S. Census data (2010). Here's what they came up with:

I finished the mini-series Island At War last night. It's a six episode series that concluded with a set-up for season two, which never happened. According to Wikipedia, the series was better received in American than it's native U.K., which had been inundated with WWII dramas. The premise is the German occupation of the Channel Islands, not far from the coast of France. I found the series got off to a slow start, but picked up a bit as it went along. In a way I felt that very little happened over the course of the six episodes, but there was certainly enough story to keep me watching until the end. I guess the series focusses more on the everyday part of people being in such an extraordinary situation instead of tons of espionage, uprisings and battles. Maybe the producers hoped they'd have time to cover those parts of the story as well with future seasons. I'm disappointed that this was the only season because it would have been very interesting to see how the power shifted over time and how in this story, all of that would have transpired. I'd give this a recommendation even though we only got to see a few chapters of this story instead of the whole thing.
 
Through Amazon Prime, I'm finding tons of British shows that had 1 or 2 series and then got prematurely canceled. I only found out they were "prematurely" canceled just by where the episode ended and looking it up online with people angry about the cancellations. It seemed both ITV and BBC went on big purges in the past few years both trying to find new programmng to define them for the next few years. It seems a lot of period dramas were on the hit list. Maybe BBC and ITV want to move away from war-centric or dirge like shows.

I watched Hall Pass on the weekend. It's a 2011 comedy with Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikas whose wives give them one week off from their marriage to do whatever they want. Since both couples were experiencing some dissatisfaction with one another, they figured they'd go on vacation for a week, leaving their husbands at home to get whatever they needed to out of their systems. But the men had no idea how much the world of being single had changed and for the most part, ended up falling on their butts. I didn't get into this movie at first, but after the first third it started showing more heart to it than I expected and looked at how difficult things can be for single people and also showed how lucky the men were to have the wives/relationships they have. At the same time, the wives on vacation realize that maybe this is a week off for them as well, so they have their own learning experience happening. Christina Applegate plays one of the wives and Jenna something from The Office is the other wife. Too lazy to look up her name right now! :lol: Overall this isn't going to make any top movies list, but it's something light-hearted to watch when you don't want anything too serious.
 
I've seen 2 of those 3 movies! Usually I miss all the popular stuff now that my kids are older.

Speaking of kids... someone brought a baby to the Wonder Woman showing I was at. A baby. the Hell?

Someone brought a baby to the screening of The Last Temptation of Christ back in the day. I thought that was an unwise decision on their part.

The baby in our theatre cried through three various scenes of the movie. For some reason, the parent(s) didn't think it might be a good move to take their infant to the lobby or to the restroom.......... :shuffle:
