U.S. Ice Dance 2016/17 season - news & updates

Wheaton Ice Skating Academy will have its annual fundraising show on February 11 at 12:15 pm at Rockville Ice Arena in Maryland. The ticket is $20 per person. See their Website for details:

http://www.wisa.us/

Last year the fundraiser was well attended in the community. I recommend getting there a bit early to find parking space.
Did you go this year? Impressions, anyone?

Was this Olympic YouTube channel 9-minute feature on the Shibutanis (Jan. 4, 2017) ever posted in this thread? Olympic Ice Dancers, Siblings and YouTubers. Meet the Shibutanis | Gold Medal Entourage

The Shibs have a really good PR person, of course they make themselves an easy sell as well.

Not much to report on this. It's an annual fundraiser show for WISA, which is a non-profit organization. Nearly all the kids in the academy skate a bit in the show. The older ones who compete skated their free dance. The smaller ones who aren't competing yet skated pattern dances.

Of note, Elizaveta Orlova and Stephano Schuster are junior ice dancers representing Austria. According to the program book, they "relocated from Vienna, Austria to Maryland in 2016 to train with the Academy." They were 2016 and 2017 Austrian national junior champions.

The Parsonses and McNamara and Carpenter finished the show with their disco-themed group exhibition.

I'm hoping to see Olivia Ilin and Dylan Cain compete in juvenile soon. Love his hair. :p

BTW, parking appeared to be even tighter than last year. :)

I was wondering if WISA had new teams! They haven't updated the Skaters page on their site this year, so it still has some old teams (like Sletten/Verburg) listed, and others are still listed as last year's level. Was surprised not to see any Juvenile WISA teams at Sectionals/Nationals this year.

Here's their ISU bio (Valter Rizzo, who coaches in Italy, is still listed as one of their coaches): http://www.isuresults.com/bios/isufs00035209.htm

Hopefully next season! Thanks for posting. I assume Olivia is the daughter of one of the Wheaton coaches and that Dylan is the younger brother of Claire Cain (6th in Intermediate with Andrei Davydov at 2017 Nationals).

Veronica Chunikhin/Maxim Korotcov competed as a Juvenile team for WISA this past season (at Lake Placid IDC in late July and Challenge Cup in September) but did not compete at Easterns Sectionals. Perhaps their coaches didn't think they were ready yet?

There were 2 other WISA Juv. teams at the beginning of the season (final 2 listed in post #1 of this thread), but I don't know about their current status.

For those who don't have an IN season pass subscription, I came across these 2017 Nationals videos uploaded by the skaters and/or their families:

Novice free dance of the silver medalists, Katarina DelCamp/Maxwell Gart: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGAD0Ax1HC4

Intermediate free dance of the champions, Katarina Wolfkostin/Howard Zhao: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSJamEog8Tg

Juvenile free dance of the champions, Nastia Efimova/Jonathan Zhao (he's not related to Howard): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAhg-NDP9OA

Chunikhin and Korotcov are still a team.

Matthew Sperry is skating with Zoe Sensenbrenner now. Maxim Belyantsev is partnered with Rebecca Ogorodnikov.

The youngest Soldatova (Sophia) is currently without a partner. She looks exactly like Maria.

I became an instant fan of Wolfkostin when I watched the streaming of Nationals.

^^^ Isabella Amoia was 5th in Novice Dance with Cory Fraiman at 2017 Nationals.

Wheaton lists these 2 Novice teams - both are likely to stay Novice:
Elizabeth Tkachenko/Alexei Kiliakov (4th in Novice at 2017 Nationals)
Jordan Lin/Morgan Sletten (5th at Eastern Sectionals in November 2016)

Ditto for these 2 Intermediate teams:
Maria Soldatova/Faddey Soldatov (4th in Intermediate at Nationals)
Claire Cain/Andrei Davydov (6th in Intermediate at Nationals)

3 Juvenile teams:
Olivia Ilin/Dylan Cain (moving up from Pre-Juvenile)
Victoria Chunikhin/Maxim Korotkov (typo? he competed Juvenile with Veronica Chunikhin last season)
Zoe Sensenbrenner/Matthew Sperry (new team)

@Jun Y, looks like you're getting your wish!

Belyantsev is listed as a solo skater at the moment.

On IPS:
Layla Grace Karnes, 11 (Int/Nov) - Intermediate silver medalist in KC with Jeffrey Chen (also Juv. champs)
Jeffrey Chen, 14, is newly listed on IPS and lists his new coaches in Canton, MI as Marina Zoueva and Tim McKernan (McKernan returned to international competition this season, now representing Australia). Chen wants to compete at the Novice level.

Layla Karnes also wants to compete at the Novice level and lists her coaches in Lake Forest, California as Christine Fowler-Binder and Collin Brubaker ("Currently training on a daily basis with a former Team USA senior male ice dancer to maintain and develop partner skills."). Karnes has "dual residency for USA and GB."

Jackie Wong interviewed Rachel Parsons & Michael Parsons last week for episode #22 of IN's "Ice Talk" podcast (starting around the 22-minute mark):
Husband-and-wife coaching team Darlene and Peter Cain join the podcast to discuss the state of American pairs skating and what it's like coaching their daughter, Ashley. Then, sibling ice dancers Rachel Parsons and Michael Parsons talk about their expectations for the 2017 World Junior Championships and why they think they're ready to make the jump to the senior level next season.

Congratulations to Rachel & Michael Parsons on winning the GOLD and Christina Carreira & Anthony Ponomarenko the BRONZE at Junior Worlds! :)

Wow, so happy for the Parsons. Michael's K&C reaction is adorable. Their programs are two of my favorites at both JR & SR level. My heart about stopped during that final lift though!!

I know, the poor guy was in shock :swoon:.

Finally watched Rachel and Michael's FD (I went to sleep early and missed it) and oh my god their reactions. Michael speechless, and Rachel's like "WHAT? WHAT? WE DID? FIRST OVERALL?" like she can't believe it either.

So adorable.

I follow Pog/Ben on social media and the work they're doing with Shae-Lynn looks very interesting.
This pic is so cool: https://www.instagram.com/p/BRpDjjsBgxf/

Thanks for sharing. I love watching Elliana & Alex. It will be interesting to see the completed work they are doing with Shae-Lynn. Any hint of their music?

Many deserved congrats to the Parsons sibs!!! :cheer2:

It's wonderful to see Carreira/Ponomarenko grab bronze and get on the podium too! Yay! :watch:

OTOH, I'm a bit bummed for Lorraine & Quinn. But, it is what it is. They should think in terms of creating a clean slate for next season and chalk up this season as a learning experience that will hold them in good stead for tackling seniors. They should keep their heads held high and move forward with confidence and a renewed spirit. Surely they are happy for their teammates' success, even as they weather their own disappointments. Quinn & Lorraine definitely have the skill and determination to come back strong. Surely their coaches are helping them to put everything into perspective.

Does anyone know if there is a Parsons thread in The Trash Can yet?
No, there isn't - feel free to start one. :)

Hard to believe that next season on the JGP will be the first season without either the Parsons or M/C competing since 2010.

Any idea why the novice champs didn't get a spring international but N2 and N3 did? Were Haines/Koszuta (him?) not age-eligible for novice internationals?

Correct, Koszuta is 18 and too old for ISU Novice (17 as of the preceding July 1st is the maximum for male pairs/dance partners).
