On the positive side :), Gracie has chosen to keep skating/competing and Skate America will be her first "real" GP (not counting 2020 "domestic" Skate America) since her WD from 2018 Rostelecom Cup (because of the ISU's scoring changes, Gracie's ISU bio only lists that SP score as her current ISU PB :eek: : http://www.isuresults.com/bios/isufs00013680.htm).

So I have no clue what Mia's situation is - if anything her training is very, very unusual compared to other elite skaters I've known at that rink through the years.

I feel the difference is this: despite what fans said, Alysa and her Dad seemed to take feedback and go with recommendations from USFS (probably via Jason Dillon, USFS's skater development guy who created a bunch of the new development programs, who used to coach at Oakland).

If you have "no clue what Mia's situation is" then you also wouldn't know whether or not Mia and her coach are trying to implement feedback from USFS, right? ;) And it's Justin Dillon. :)
 
@Sylvia Well, she doesn't seem to be working with any coaches other than her current one or going to any training seminars/camps, and honestly though she's made very small bits of progress, it's not as much as I'd expect to see if she was really focusing on it - there's a lot of skaters that have struggled like her but made a lot more progress in the same amount of time, especially in an area where there's so many resources to work with.

I just watched Mia Kalin's programs from Ostrava. Let me start by saying that it's clear that she is a hard worker and a fighter but that is not enough to make it to the top in figure skating. If she does not change coaches right now, it's going to be too late for her.

I don't see any improvement from last season to this season. Her technique looks so strange to me. She skates with such stiff knees, that it's amazing that she can land any jumps. Yet, she can do quads but habitually underrotates triples. It is so strange. I said it last season and I will say it again this season...I just don't understand how her quads look so much cleaner than her triples. It's like she has skipped a whole level of (skating) development. Her lack of good, basic skating technique leaves her on thin ice I am afraid.

If you take away the quads, there is just nothing there. I think that's what the judges are trying to tell her. Work on everything else. The fact that her team have still not addressed these issues leads me to believe that they never will. It's up to Mia and her family to recognize that.

Isabeau Levito will make her CS debut with Budko at the 2022 Ondrej Nepela Memorial, Sept. 28-Oct. 1, in Bratislava, Slovakia (also confirmed on USFS' International Assignments page).

ETA: At 2018 Golden Bear, Alena Budko won the gold and Kate Wang the bronze in Adv. Novice Ladies.

Just want to pop in and say how thrilled I am for Budko to receive an assignment to Nepela! Seems like we might see Ting Cui or Hannah Lofton in the mix for an upcoming Challenger.

ETA: Kate Wang's new FS music is listed as "Ode to the Yellow River by Jie Chen, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra" [Yellow River Concerto] - believe this music what she used for the Peggy Fleming Trophy in late June?

Thanks love. Oh my it is so humid here this September more than usual. Heading to the beach soon and yes I always follow figure skating usually lombardia and a junior Grand Prix while I’m here.

But it looks like it’s going to be the US classic and a junior Grand Prix this time
 
If the new sequence rule had been in play one season earlier, it is possible that Mariah would have been retiring as a world medalist, and on the flip side Alysa might have been motivated to keep going for barely missing out on a world medal.

I really don't think Alysa was going to continue regardless of whatever happened at Worlds.

Any streams for the Atlantic mids competition?

Nope, the math doesn't work. The sequence reduction cost Bell 1.72 points, and Liu beat her by 2.53 points.

In addition, Liu would have had the opportunity to upgrade her 3F+2T to 3F+2A, in the second half of the program, which would have raised her base value from 7.26 to 9.46 (+2.2). I think it's just as likely that the rule change would have resulted in Liu increasing her margin of victory.

Bell may have beaten Liu had she not bobbled both triple lutzes. She also could have upped her base value by a full point by attempting a 3S v. 2A, but she seemed to have lost that jump.

I'm glad the results shook out the way they did. If anything, I thought Bell was overmarked in PCS given how tentative her free skate performance seemed. If she's moving on from the sport, I think that's a good decision. Russians or not, the technical side has passed her by. She'd be fighting just to stay on the podium at Nationals and would probably find herself drifting down the Rachael Flatt, Emily Hughes, etc. path, ending up 10th to 15th at Nationals by 2026.
 
Watched the women’s free in Riga. Job well done to Soho to medal at age 13 on her first Jr Grand Prix outing! Loved both of her classical music programs that she is able to carry off well at her age. The ballet inspired tutu dress in the free was really striking…and she got the memo to ditch the tights over boots here! She has a good shot at the final if she can keep up the consistency. Love her name…so unusual.

Hannah Herrera did a creditable job. She skates pretty hot and cold but love the attack! Her choreography sequence was a standout in the whole event for me. Now if she can work on fixing her posture and not rounding her shoulders so much it would help her impression immensely.
