Had to rewatch Lucas Broussard’s JGP programs more than a few times because I can’t get enough of his skating. I kept thinking he looks like he has grown a lot since last year. He was towering over the Japanese men on the podium. I watched some of his JGP skates from last year and sure enough it looks like he had a really significant growth spurt. He was landing the triple axel last year, so I’m sure it’s a matter of adjusting to the growth. Plus he said he was off the ice for about 4 months from injury and apparently had a bad bout with Covid too. Amazing with all of those obstacles he was able to pull of two gold medals on the JGP!
From what I know, Broussard's withdrawal from the Junior Men's event at 2022 Nationals was due to covid. He came back to skate well enough in USFS' singles selection camp at the end of January/early February to win a Junior Worlds spot, but then had to withdraw due to injury :( (to his back, IIRC? Lucas told Ted Barton in his first JGP winner's interview that he was off the ice for "almost 4 months"). Broussard's first competition of 2022-23 season was not until the NQS in Sherwood, Oregon in late August.

@mtnskater - this was one of my posts from that time in this thread :) (before he was assigned to his first JGP, Solidarity Cup in Gdansk):
Lucas Broussard began attempting 3A in competition last season when he was 15: 3Aq fall in SP and 3A (-2.17 GOE) when he won the silver at JGP Courchevel #1; 3A<< fall in SP and 3A +1.26 GOE in his 2nd JGP in Krasnoyarsk (8th overall with ISU PB scores of 198.77 total, 64.00 in SP and 134.77 5th in FS - Ted B. spoke highly of him afterwards): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CaMrOD-Dzp0
He had qualified for 2022 Nationals and was selected for Junior Worlds but WD from both. :(
He looks like he may have grown even taller and so I trust his coaching team (Hosier & Martin) not to "rush" the 3A back into his programs until they think he's ready. I see I'm not alone in thinking he has skating qualities that are quite special :) and I hope to be able to watch him develop without major injuries in the years ahead.
Lucas Broussard's interview in Egna, Italy with Ted Barton (his changing facial expressions are quite amusing to behold!): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdjYx0-pSkI
The latest challenge he had to overcome was illness - he told Ted he had missed a couple days of training for his 2nd JGP [when he was back home in Seattle after Gdansk1] and "was feeling a little under the weather ... had a fever ... got through it, that's what's important."
 at how Ted pressed him to reveal any adjustments he might make for the JGP Final: "We're going to see if the quad toe can go in but ... who knows? You never know!"

Yay, another article (in Fan Zone by Rachel Lutz) on Liam Kapeikis :):
Besides figure skating, Kapeikis has a passion for robotics and aerospace engineering. Throughout elementary and middle school, he said his strengths were in math and science, which lead to joining the VEX Robotics Club. He's won medals on that competition circuit as well.
"I was researching and figuring out like 'what kind of jobs are in this?'" he said. "That's how I found out about aerospace engineering because I'm also very interested in planes and space. Aerospace engineering incorporates the robots, engineering and space."
When Kapeikis is on terra firma, he spends his time as a barista at the local Starbucks, where he's worked for about a month. He usually takes a four-hour early-bird shift before heading to skating practice in the afternoons.
To connect with Kapeikis, follow his Instagram @leapin_liam. His account's name even has a tie back to another famous skater.
"When I was a kid, we were doing a show at my home rink in Wenatchee, [Washington]," he said. "They brought in [1984 Olympic bronze medalist] Jozef Sabovčík as a guest skater. One of his famous nicknames is Jumping Joe. I was maybe working on double Axel and one of the parents at the time started calling me Leapin' Liam based of off Jumping Joe's nickname."

Jason is scheduled to skate for 3 shows, Ice Explosion 2023, that will take place in Yokohama, Japan during 1/6-1/8/2023.
Well, these will be 3 weeks before men's SP at US Nationals.

This week he's out in Arizona horseback riding. I think it's fairly safe to say he won't be competing at Nationals. ;)

I didn’t watch anything besides the Peacock coverage of Skate America, but I thought I read somewhere that he said during the broadcast he hadn’t ruled it out? Considering what he did at the Japan Open after a few weeks of serious training, I don’t see any reason he couldn’t compete at nationals this season. Could go either way, but nothing he’s said or done so far seems particularly definitive to me.

"Not ruling anything out" usually doesn't translate into actually competing. It's what you hear from an athlete who doesn't want to lose relevance, so they don't formally announce they are retired.

I mean, Nathan also hasn't ruled out competing in the future, but... Does anyone really expect him to come back after he's finished with Yale?

I can see Nathan wanting to give it a try aka Boitano. Even Evan tried, unsuccessfully

No, but Nathan has definitively said he’ll take a couple of years off, which makes a comeback less likely for anyone. At his age, though, he has time to at least pause and consider what he really wants to do with the rest of his 20s. Vincent has time, too, and I think a lot of people consider it more likely he’ll come back.

I don’t have a clue what Jason will do, but I don’t see anything that says he couldn’t compete at nationals at this point. He hasn’t lost so much training time that it’s impossible, and he’s never exactly seemed like the world’s fastest decision-maker. But he is pretty much at the last possible moment he could decide to do it, so I’m guessing we’ll know very soon.

I wouldn't make a prediction on whether or not Jason would go to 2023 Nationals, although my suspicion is that if he were to come back for Nationals, it would be more of a way to say goodbye in front of a full audience, with his family and friends watching, rather than in an attempt to qualify for any future Team USA assignments.

I agree. I doubt he’d turn down 4CCs or Worlds if he made the team, but if he was dead set on competing at Worlds this season, he wouldn’t still be waffling in late October. And beyond this season, it’s hard to imagine what would motivate him to dive back into the competitive grind when it seems like he’s got a good opportunity to balance performance with other pursuits in the next few years.

I think this is more accurate.

The horse trip happened every year while he was doing a full season, too.

He did that beautiful FS at JO on just three weeks of full-intensity training, including those very nice 3As. If he does decide to do it, training time won't be a problem. He's clearly in excellent shape and lost none of the form that took him to the Olympics. If the goal is to put out two final clean performances in front of his family and friends to say a proper farewell, that's well within reach even with his current schedule. And if he does decide from there to accept any assignments he may earn, that will be a different conversation.

Judging from The GP calls, it looks like the callers are back to being harsher on their calls. I’d welcome Jason if he decided to compete at Nationals and if he so happened to place well enough to get second half international assignments honestly.

With the lack of depth behind Ilia the US needs either Jason or Vincent to come back for Nationals i don't want to see Ilia have to carry the load all by himself at Worlds he will need a consistent skater to help him keep 3 spots for the US.

Eh, if the US men drop down to 2 spots at Worlds next year, it's not the end of time. Same thing happened at the beginning of the last quad and all was fine by 2022. We have some good talent coming up, guys with more reliable 3As and quads, than the ones competing on the GP along with Ilia this year.

I haven’t seen any hint that Vincent is interested in competing this season. If Jason decides to compete, it doesn’t seem at all likely he’d be going full out with Worlds as his goal. They’ve both earned the right to not have to carry those expectations at this point, frankly.

Camden and Jimmy both have the foundation to be excellent, and we’ve got a lot of talent coming up. US fans have been spoiled the last four years and we might just need to get used to a little more suspense this Olympic cycle. If we don’t have three spots every year, it’s not the end of the world.

The US men had three spots at every worlds that was held in the last quad.

I’d be thrilled to see Jason back. But I also totally get it if he wants to move on and experience other things. He’s dedicated so much to skating for so long! I wish there was still a pro scene. It would’ve suited him so well. I still find his skating much more exciting to watch than anybody else’s. I showed my kids some amazing male jumping beans that have made a splash lately, and one of them requested the music to be turned off because it was “too noisy”, and the other asked, “why do they play music when they’re skating?” Ack!
A bit damning, isn’t it?

While neither here nor there for nationals speculation, he’s there for his sister’s wedding, which he’d do regardless of competitive plans. I personally would be very shocked but pleasantly so if he did decide to do it.
Yes, and here's a link to some photos:

Pretty great background for a photo shoot

I don’t see horseback riding keeping him from Nationals, but maybe the shoes in Japan although he could use his programs in those. ?
