From what I know, Broussard's withdrawal from the Junior Men's event at 2022 Nationals was due to covid. He came back to skate well enough in USFS' singles selection camp at the end of January/early February to win a Junior Worlds spot, but then had to withdraw due to injuryHad to rewatch Lucas Broussard’s JGP programs more than a few times because I can’t get enough of his skating. I kept thinking he looks like he has grown a lot since last year. He was towering over the Japanese men on the podium. I watched some of his JGP skates from last year and sure enough it looks like he had a really significant growth spurt. He was landing the triple axel last year, so I’m sure it’s a matter of adjusting to the growth. Plus he said he was off the ice for about 4 months from injury and apparently had a bad bout with Covid too. Amazing with all of those obstacles he was able to pull of two gold medals on the JGP!
(to his back, IIRC? Lucas told Ted Barton in his first JGP winner's interview that he was off the ice for "almost 4 months"). Broussard's first competition of 2022-23 season was not until the NQS in Sherwood, Oregon in late August.@mtnskater - this was one of my posts from that time in this thread
(before he was assigned to his first JGP, Solidarity Cup in Gdansk):Lucas Broussard's interview in Egna, Italy with Ted Barton (his changing facial expressions are quite amusing to behold!): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdjYx0-pSkILucas Broussard began attempting 3A in competition last season when he was 15: 3Aq fall in SP and 3A (-2.17 GOE) when he won the silver at JGP Courchevel #1; 3A<< fall in SP and 3A +1.26 GOE in his 2nd JGP in Krasnoyarsk (8th overall with ISU PB scores of 198.77 total, 64.00 in SP and 134.77 5th in FS - Ted B. spoke highly of him afterwards): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CaMrOD-Dzp0
He had qualified for 2022 Nationals and was selected for Junior Worlds but WD from both.
He looks like he may have grown even taller and so I trust his coaching team (Hosier & Martin) not to "rush" the 3A back into his programs until they think he's ready. I see I'm not alone in thinking he has skating qualities that are quite specialand I hope to be able to watch him develop without major injuries in the years ahead.
The latest challenge he had to overcome was illness - he told Ted he had missed a couple days of training for his 2nd JGP [when he was back home in Seattle after Gdansk1] and "was feeling a little under the weather ... had a fever ... got through it, that's what's important."
at how Ted pressed him to reveal any adjustments he might make for the JGP Final: "We're going to see if the quad toe can go in but ... who knows? You never know!"
