I’m thinking I missed something here. Is this a skating thread, about the US men? Has someone been seen roaming the dunes at night?
Reminds me of the disco song "Fire Island" by the Village People - "Don't go near the bushes..." :grope:

Liam Kapeikis won the bronze in his senior international debut at Egna Spring Trophy, scoring 219.81 total (71.52 in SP, 148.29 FS 2nd) and attained the current Worlds TES minimums. :) His 2nd place FS with opening 3A+1Eu+3S starts here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bafkw7n4Iw&t=2730s
Even though he popped the 3A in his SP, he got the current Worlds TES minimums of 34 as well as 64 (71.61 TES in FS in Egna).

Junior Men results:
4 Kai KOVAR USA 186.12 5 3 (65.13 SP, 120.99 FS - popped his first 3A, landed 3A+2T & 2nd half 3Lz+3T)
9 Antonio MONACO USA 130.29 10 9 (44.30 SP, 85.99 FS)

Kirk Haugeto won the silver in Adv. Novice Boys 124.23 2 1 (42.14 SP, 82.09 FS).
Kirk Haugeto is a pretty amazing performer, especially for someone so young!

His silver medal winning performance is at 1:16 here:

On to Junior Worlds in Tallinn for Kapeikis and Kovar!

Agree about Liam's SP. I thought Selevko was overlooked and should have been 5th behind both Kapeikis and Tsuboi of Japan. Oh well, better luck next time. I hope he can have a great FS and still finish high.

Congratulations to Ilia Malinin, 2022 WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPION! :cheer:

His winning FS (ISU PBs of 187.12 & 276.11 total) starts here in the replay video (medal ceremony is at the end): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utLriA_I4pM&t=13020s
His FS jumps: 4Lz (-0.82 was the only element with negative GOE), 4T, 3A, 4S / 4T+1Eu+3S, 3F+3T & 3Lz+3T.

ETA link to Malinin's individual FS video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEBhn_-_obk
Ilia's SP video (88.99): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WZDICeQVV4

Liam Kapeikis had a tougher day today but kudos to him for 3 ISU personal best scores (79.83 / 131.11 / 210.94) in Tallinn. He turns 18 in June (ISU Junior age-eligible for one more season in 2022-23) and his 8th place overall helped the U.S. retain 3 spots for next year's Junior Worlds.

Kai Kovar finished 18th with 2 ISU PBs - 176.23 total, 57.69 in SP.

By all appearances at Jr Worlds, I don't think Raf is quite ready to retire...

Not only was he there as Stephen Gogolev's primary coach, but he was at the boards along with Ilia's dad during practices and the FS, and posing with them during the press conference.

Seems there’s an interview on this board somewhere and Raf says he doesn’t know if he has the energy to go to another Olympics as a coach but he would at least be Malinin’s mentor.

You beat me to it. Holy sh*t. Looked fully rotated to me. Even standing it up in competition would be a huge points-getter. Strategically, I think Ilia would be better to work on adding the flip or loop, though, as well as repeating the quad lutz.
Yeah... It looks fully rotated to my eyes too. Even with the step out on the landing, the points it would get would be insane. I think the interview with Raf post-Jr Worlds indicated that Ilia's landing the flip and loop in practices but they weren't ready for competition this spring. I expect we'll see one or both added to his competitive programs next season. I could see Ilia going for a 4A in an early fall competition, just to see if he can land it and have it ratified, then focusing on getting the other jumping elements consistent in his programs.

Agree on both points. I know this is a dangerous thing to say anywhere on the internet, but that’s the first really credible 4A attempt I’ve ever seen from anyone. He could land that in competition someday.

That said, even though I’m sure his team is being mindful of overtraining, a fluke bad fall on a jump like that could be devastating. I hope they’re doing very careful risk/reward analysis pretty much every day with this kid.

Artur Jr's jumps looked pretty unreliable and messy all-around. Did he really have any plausible 4x attempts? Was anything caught on video? Congrats to Ilia -- that huge height into the 4x is incredible!
