U.S. Men 2019-20 season - news & updates

The weirdest part is that both ones at this competition were Vera Wang. Seriously I don't mind the athletic shirts, they're better than whatever hideous creation Vera Wang gives him. I actually liked his athletic shirt from the earlier Grand Prixs better because it evoked the colorful drug trip that was Elton John's life as portrayed in that movie.
Wow I didn’t know that. What th got into Vera Wang these days?

I liked that shirt, too. a

My favourite mom-made outfit is the chartreuse dress worn by Peggy Fleming at the 1968 Olympics.
I love that dress that Peggy's mom made for the Olympics. She tried to match the color of the grapes used to make wine in that region of France. At first I was  at Nathan's shirt at SA, but it does fit the rocket man music and those psychedelic times.

His yellow shirt would look okay in a different/additional color.

I literally saw a red, smoke grey and black version of it at Bloomingdales, hence my post.

We have an extremely talented skater capable of winning everything he enters. That's incredible! Why are we obsessed with a shirt? There has always been some connection with Vera Wang. The give away that the yellow shirt was not homemade was the stylized "E" appliqué on the sleeve. Of course, it was special made by someone. The yellow color could be a reference to Elton's final album/tour "Good-bye Yellow Brick Road". The color on the cover is neon yellow. Vera finally got the message that Nathan likes loose fitting shirts instead of close fitting one-piece outfits. She didn't get the message about the high neckline. (Remember he ditched the black with orange stripe at the Olympics because it was too tight around the neck.) I wouldn't be surprised if Nathan changes shirts again, but what does it matter? Maybe he likes the cooling effect of air on his belly and it energizes him for the rest of the performance! We should be more concerned that he always has enough duck tape on his boots. :D

I agree 100% with The Yellow Brick Road being the reason for the yellow.

The more I rewatch his two events here, I am starting to get that the baggy look is intentional, just not sure I love his posture in them. And I think he could look stronger in more form fitting shirts.

But I guess he really is the strongest one out there with all those quads, and what we are seeing is the dude who jumped off his skateboard to do a few ice tricks. I'm cool with that.

Forget about style and theme, I think Nathan could've at the very least gotten a shirt that actually enhances/shows off his great form/arms instead of a shirt that completely hides one of his great strengths.

I think Vera works pretty close with her skaters and the top priority is what makes the skater feel most comfortable while competing. All Michelle and Evan’s outfits tended to be in one personal style, same for Nathan, he obviously likes these loose shirts, and who’s to complain when one competes so well.
Thanks Cayuse for noting the Yellow Brick Road , I was baffled why you’d chose yellow for Elton John. I do think I could have applied an ‘E’ on a Target shirt and achieved the same look, but whatever makes him feel comfortable is most important.

Phil Hersh's latest:
“I am thrilled things are where they are this early,” Chen said via telephone from Turin a few hours after the event ended. “It won’t be easy to maintain, so we will see how things go.
“As the season progresses, a lot of things can change. When I get back to California, we can plan how to approach the next couple competitions. But I’m very happy this happened.”
The next two competitions are the U.S. Championships Jan. 23-26 in Greensboro, N.C. and the World Championships March 18-21 in Montreal.
The men’s event at nationals begins 12 days after the start of second semester classes at Yale. The men’s event at worlds begins 13 days after the start of the Yale spring break, which should give Chen a chance to spend more time with Arutunian before heading to Montreal. Separated from the coach by 3,000 miles and three time zones, Chen has been getting most of his instruction through occasional video chat.
“It’s going well, but I feel I can improve more with a pair of eyes on me,” Chen said.

From Hersh's article, a quote by Hanyu referencing Nathan:

"'He has everything – so much clean jumps, music sense is good,' Hanyu said of Chen at the press conference following Saturday’s free skate. 'He can feel the tempo with music. He has so much experience (from) gymnastics and ballet, and I don’t have it...'"

It's nice that Hanyu recognizes Nathan's musicality. I wasn't aware of Nathan having been a gymnast though. It's more prominently been discussed that Nathan studied and performed ballet as a youngster.

I don’t think he competed in gymnastics, but he took gymnastics lessons for years.

^^ Wow, having a background in gymnastics and ballet is definitely a cool combination which has apparently been quite beneficial to Nathan in executing his amazing figure skating feats (especially his rotational ability and technique in the air on his jumps). But as we know, Nathan Chen is very cool. Figure skating is lucky to have him.

Five quads and a clean skate with attention to artistry, and it all seems so matter-of-fact and largely treated as such, when it's actually jaw-dropping and incredible. Not the least because of academic pursuits dividing Nathan's attention, coupled with the long-distance coaching situation.

Regarding the two shirt designs, I'm not particularly enamored of either. But with Nathan skating like that, I'm not paying too much attention to his outfits. ;) Still, it would be nice if they find something that looks better and more enhancing for the program. Of the two shirt designs, the yellow & white is the least appealing.

Nathan did compete and won some gymnastics competition in Utah when he was very young. Missing from the following tidbits was that he once won some piano competition when he was very young. Too bad he stopped playing it after moving to California. Good thing is he now enjoys playing guitar to relax a little bit

From this website

“Tidbits
  • Started figure skating in the fall of 2002
  • Won boys all-around at 2008 Utah State Gymnastics Championships
  • First international skating show in Hangzhou, China, May 2010
  • Passed USFS silver dance test in March 2011”

Nathan has been named to Forbes' 30 under 30 in the Sports Category, a first this year.

Oh, his sister was named in the Health Care category last year. The sibling pressure in his family is heavy 😂

... Passed USFS silver dance test in March 2011”

So, Nathan can also do ice dance! :D He could probably do pairs too, but singles is apparently more his passion. And he works quite well solo :rollin:

I hope Nathan chooses to skate to another great piano selection soon.

He's a couple inches shorter than Jean Luc so I'd stick with singles;).

Yeah, it's not about competing, it's about that he can do dance and he's multi-dimensional. Of course, Nathan's slim build and smaller height means he's not an ideal candidate for either ice dance or pairs realistically. And that's fine, since singles is his focus and his passion, and the discipline where he's broken records and made amazing contributions to the sport. :)

Nathan Chen and Aleona Kostornaya named "Athletes of the Month" in November by US Sports Academy.

Torgashev has personally organized a charity auction for a pair of his custom designed Jackson Ultima skates, where 100% of the profits will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the world's largest wish-granting organization which grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.
... Torgashev custom designed them using freehand acrylic work with white and grey paints. He shares, "When I started these skates, I didn't know what would come of them. I just knew it had to be something special." Torgashev further acknowledges it took him over four months to brainstorm his ideas. "I wanted my designs to relate to Make-A-Wish, so I really let my imagination go. I added fun designs like aliens and spaceships, so they are geared toward children," says Torgashev.
The current high bid on ebay is $222.50 and the deadline to bid is Tuesday, December 24th at 6 p.m. Mountain time.

Torgashev performed in Vail, CO this weekend:
I caught an Instagram story clip (before it expired) of him landing a 4S in practice.
