U.S. Ice Dance 2023-24 news & updates

I just think the Browns are more "ballroom" oriented in general (as far as teams currently competing). They can hear and dance to a beat really well. They understand music and it helps them with their dancing.

ZingKol's and PateBye's programs were very creative but looked more like Pairs' Programs than Dance ones.

The Browns' programs were very dance-like and they skated like Ice Dancers.

ZingKol's and PateBye's programs were very creative but looked more like Pairs' Programs than Dance ones.

This is something that bothers me a lot...the way many dance programs are choreographed to the melody of the music rather than the beat of the music and that is what makes the programs look like pairs programs (that plus "dance" elements like spins and lifts are now almost indistinguishable between the two disciplines).

I thought the Browns' programs were much more "dancey" than those of both ZingKol and PateBye, I thought the latter two had programs with a lot of gimmicks.

That hasn’t hurt Chock and Bates. The latter two see the ultimate path forward, maybe not this season but that is winning/medaling now.

..but Chock/Bates picked music with a strong beat to dance to and that makes their program look more "ballroom" and idiomatic despite all the cool highlights.

The Browns are matched very well physically and both are short with low centers of gravity which I think makes it helpful for ice dance. Like standing a short pencil vs a tall one. I can't deny they skate well but I just can't get on board with them. I rarely like sibling teams...the Shubatanis were the only ice dance sibling team I thought transcended that fact and I enjoyed their programs a lot. P/B and Z/K are much more appealing to me than the Browns, and my faves right now are CarPon. It is hard to be a US ice dance uber though, we have so many great teams. OTOH, you don't have to worry about putting all your eggs in one basket.

I love Kolesnik/Zingas and I think it's a miracle that she has learned so much about dance in so short a time but I think one of the reasons that Igor picked the music that he did for them is that it is much harder to dance on the beat. With this music, they don't have to. I don't think Emilea is quite at that (skill) level yet, so this choreography (and music) cleverly disguises that fact. Igor is a genius at presenting a team so that their strengths are highlighted (in this case stretch, extension, bodyline, lifting and spinning) and their weaknesses disguised.

Huge kudos to Emilea for getting through those tough twizzle sequences in both programs!
