True Crime thread / for Adults only

I'm actually with @Private Citizen regarding the Menendez brothers. I don't doubt that they were horrifically abused, as family members have come forth with reports that they both reported abuse at young ages (and no one did anything to stop it). While both were adults at the time of the crime, were their brains really "adult" or still the screwed up adolescents? Yes, they went on the spending spree afterwards, which is beyond the pale. But have they served enough time for their crime and could they be considered "rehabilitated" at this point? I think possibly so.

I think he drove her to it. He was legit stalking her and put a tracker on her car. She had other mental issues beforehand, and he essentially groomed her since she was a teenager. The church was her whole life and I doubt the community would have believed her over him. Hopefully the feds can find something on him that sticks, just because he didn't actually murder her doesn't mean he didn't put her in a mental state that made her feel like she had no escape.

  • There were extenuating circumstances, and the case would be looked at differently in 2024 than it was at the time
  • Making decisions based on Instagram petitions and a Ryan Murphy series doesn't sit right with me

So where does that leave me? I'm not sure. But resentencing doesn't seem unreasonable to me on the surface, assuming the documentary and the series represent things at least semi-accurately (not a given). The brothers have done 35 years behind bars. I don't think releasing them now would send a message that murdering your parents is OK.

On the Ryan Murphy series:
  • Ari Graynor deserves an Emmy for her portrayal of Leslie Abramson. She's captivating.

I assume you’re talking about the Menendez movie on Netflix? I personally found it very, very confusing - that’s more a criticism of Netflix though. They just presented too many confusing scenarios of what happened.

Although I remember the murders way back … I never really followed it.

But yes boys/teenagers/males etc can be sexually assaulted. They’ll likely get out.

And DA Gascon used this as a - yes, I’m still skeptical of his real intentions - “Hail Mary Pass” because he was down in the polls. Well, Gascon still lost badly - and incoming DA Hochman has this to say about the Menendez case.

Yes I know that but thought it was being looked at because of the supposed sexual abuse. They were convicted of 1st degree which in the U.S. I believe is literally life in prison. Our courts in Canada are very different. But why them over others?

And he’s sorry to the law enforcement for their time and money spent? Not his wife and kids?! 😱
 
A tip lead police to her killer in 1979 but he was released after passing a polygraph test and never questioned again. He has since passed away but identified through DNA. Esther Gonzales was only 17. Hopefully she can now R.I.P.
