I recently watched both the Ryan Murphy series and the Netflix documentary. I don't know what to think anymore.
My own conflicting beliefs are as follows:
- The Menendez brothers committed premeditated first degree murder and were spoiled brats
- There were extenuating circumstances, and the case would be looked at differently in 2024 than it was at the time
- Making decisions based on Instagram petitions and a Ryan Murphy series doesn't sit right with me
So where does that leave me? I'm not sure. But resentencing doesn't seem unreasonable to me on the surface, assuming the documentary and the series represent things at least semi-accurately (not a given). The brothers have done 35 years behind bars. I don't think releasing them now would send a message that murdering your parents is OK.
