The Dance Hall 8: Join the Maskerade 2020-2021

Hope Canada sends a team if worlds do happen the ice dancers look sufficiently trained to compete well, this could actually be Piper and Paul`s best chance with pap ciz out and sinkats injured sick they may have a better shot at a medal this year than they had last year, the both sides now program has evolved into something special the changes they made have taken the program to the next level.

Re-posting the news from yesterday in this thread as well - Christina Carreira and Anthony Ponomarenko shared the same message on their respective Instagram accounts yesterday:
We would like to thank Igor, Pasquale, Adrienne, Natalia, and our entire coaching team in Novi for all the work they’ve done to get us to the point we are at now. We wouldn’t be the athletes we are today without their expertise and commitment. With that being said, we feel that it’s time for us to move on to a new training environment and change coaches. We will be announcing details in the following weeks.

@sap5 asked about Marina Zoueva's current coaching team in Florida - Kana Muramoto/Daisuke Takashashi's current ISU bio lists her, Johnny Johns, Oleg Epstein (who, IIRC, was with them at NHK Trophy & JPN Nationals?), Ilia Tkachenko as coaches.

ETA: Turkey's Alper Ucar and Berk Akalin (with new partner Yuliia Zlata representing TUR), as well as France's Julia Wagret/Pierre Souquet, used to be in Zoueva's group and they are now based at the Iceberg Skating Academy in Pembroke Pines, Florida, that was founded by Ucar, John & Nadine Kerr: https://www.instagram.com/iceberg_skating_academy/

I have a great feeling they are moving to Montreal, thinking beyond 2022 they could be USA1 (with the retirements of C/B and H/D) and what better than having the coaching at the same camp where the best american ice dance couples have come from recently

Nah, based on his IG story from earlier today (gorgeous sunset on a white sand beach), I'm betting on somewhere in Florida.

^^^ As @litenkyckling posted in the U.S. Dance news thread:
I think they're [Ponomarenko & Carreira] both at home with their families just now, Christina posted one from Montreal earlier in the week

Interestingly, Skating Finland had an Instagram story a few days ago that showed free dance scores for ISU Virtual Test Competition 2 featuring 6 teams from 4 countries:
1 Juulia Turkkila/Matthias Versluis FIN 105.07
2 Carolina Moscheni/Francesco Fioretti ITA 92.59 - new this season: https://www.ice-dance.com/site/getting-to-know-carolina-moscheni-and-francesco-fioretti/
3 Yuka Orihara/Juho Pirinen FIN 89.70
4 Arianna Wroblewska/Stephane Walker SUI 86.10
5 Paulina Ramanauskaite/Devidas Kizala LTU 81.59 (she began ice dancing last season - her ISU singles bio through 2018-19: http://www.isuresults.com/bios/isufs00101592.htm)
6 Arina Klinovitskaya/Jussiville Partanen FIN 79.96

Another thing if they announce this right away they would be eligible to represent Canada at worlds 2022 meaning the year of waiting would have expired assuming G&P and the canadanes decide to skip worlds after the olympics very smart on their part.

I think I already know what it is not only are carreira and ponomarenko moving to Montreal, but also switching federations and skate for Canada, i am not buying that they had to withdraw from US nationals because of ********* everything seems to have been well calculated on their part.
Would USFS be that willing to release them?

No, they definitely wouldn't.

There's also no reason for Christina & Anthony to switch countries. I think discussion around this prospect originally arose from a misunderstanding around Christina's immigration problems; she wasn't denied the ability to get citizenship, just the ability to get citizenship for 2022 (though theoretically I suppose Uncle Joe could still come through for her in the next eleven months). She can get it still for 2026, and that being the case, they're better off staying in the US (even assuming the USFS was for some reason willing to let them go).

They would have no choice there is no Guarantee that Cristina will have citizenship by 2026 there is the possibility of another republican president in 2024 that would be thougher on immgration that could complicate things. Cristina is from Montreal, and while Anthony was born in the US his parents are russian, there is a big russian community in Montreal he would easily get citizenship like the russian pair skater.

And what if she does not get it, there could be another change of administration in 2024 a republican very though on immigration why take the risk as for Joe Biden the way he cancelled the keystone pipeline in the first hours of his presidency angered Canada. I am not sure giving citizenship to a Canadian figure skater is in his priorities.

Yes, they very much would.

The Trump Administration's curtailing of the expedited visa program doesn't have any impact on the regular naturalization scheme. Christina is a white woman who speaks fluent English, she will not encounter difficulty getting citizenship under any US administration.

Ah yes, environmental politics around natural resources construction and immigration are tightly linked subject areas.

They would still be taking a risk I remember Tanith Belbin for the 2006 olympics, 2 months before the olympics still did not have it it took last minute intervention from a high profile politician to get it.

I think what this year has shown is that skating federations have little interest in skater welfare and more interest in money and income. I don't think they'd give up Anthony because the Ponomarenko fluff story is exactly what they love and can gain a lot of capital from. Not only that but C/P are the Worlds alternates, which they petitioned for so I doubt they'd be planning a switch over.

Not only that but the US has 3 legislative branches, Trump was not a regular Republican and Tanith Belbin got her citizenship in just under the wire (albeit with a lot of congressional help, work and time) under Bush.

Colonel Green Sergei Ponomarenko the father of Anthony is a high profile member of the ISU a technical specialist, if he decides his son has to move to Canada to better his interests would the USFS really want to play hardball with him.

I presume Sergei Ponomarenko still holds influence within the Russian federation even if he lives in the US, tricky situation here for usfs.
