They are very sharp and very fast they pratically rob me of any opportunity to enjoy the dance if that makes sense. To me a tango is not an athletic aesthetic which is what I sense when I watch them perform but that is just my impression. I can also understand if you perceive them differently.
As much as I like their Tango, I see what you mean and agree somewhat in that often people mismatch fast and rushed. In music interpretation I hear that a lot too and it drives me bonkers. You can definitely skate fast yet let the elements breathe but it is still lacking in their performance. They came out all guns blazing but now they need, for the rest of the season, to learn to let everything breathe so the intensity/smoldering tango effect can be more genuine.

Not really, but you are entitled to your opinion obviously... The piece requires being sharp and fast, which I think they excel at. I am guessing you don't feel like they embody the character ?
Exactly. Its sharp and fast without being anything else. Or maybe I just find this aggressive type of tango not as appealing. But either way they were more confident and assertive than S/B today. They looked defeated on the ice today.

Precisely, exactly what Oleg Epstein was asking for, the soul in their dance.

Had to google that but yes Stepanova's first partner is Bukin and they've been with Svinin and Zhuk since the beginning. I wouldn't say they are necessarily jumping on the bandwagon, I just think that SinKats are the stronger team overall and they are choosing to recognize that right now.

I don't have a problem with Step/Buk and the current vision their coaching team has for them, I think their programs are overall pretty acceptable. Something like hip hop which should've been a huge challenge for them turned out pretty well imo and I found it fun when I saw it live. They should try working with a new technical coach though, more closed holds, less side by side skating. Having seen them twice in person now I was always kind struck by how soft Bukin's blades can be but Stepanova skates kinda like Bambi beside him.

It's a pity they did not address these issues seriously much earlier in her career or is it really a result of her height next to Bukin? Forcing them to retrain their technique, at this late stage will be a serious challenge for them.

For next year's Broadway RDs, if a team HAS to do a circus theme playing Barnum, I hope they use the cast recording for the Broadway show Barnum instead of The Greatest Showman. That one LP this season was enough.

That could risk being compared to this classic Barnum FD.

(Granted, it's been years, and skaters now occasionally use Bolero... but still... )

Yeah it’s been 35 years and with the restrictive nature of ice dance these days especially in the RD, any comparison would just be unfair from the get go. I hope skaters wouldn’t be afraid of that.

Yeah, I'm fond of the Barnum music and would like to see it used again, even with the risk of comparisons.

I was thinking, if skaters wanted to do something like West Side Story but fear it may be overused or other teams will use it, Leonard Bernstein composed three other Broadway musicals. On the Town, Wonderful Town, and Candide would be great RD material, especially the Candide overture. I can imagine a RD to "Bon Voyage" now.

I always wanted someone to skate to "Cool." None of the other WSS stuff, just "Cool." It's such a brilliant song IMO, but I imagine it might be very difficult to do it justice?

Yikes, Zahorski/Guerreiro met their Waterloo at Nationals. Will the body-of-work argument save that third Euros spot?

There looked like there was a boot problem too? Anyone know what specifically happened. That was a complete dog's dinner.

Yeah, Alexeeva was ripping into him about stopping and asking the ref. to restart. But looking at the pain Tiff was in he probably thought let's just get off the ice. With everything they know K/A should have simply insisted they withdraw right? Or is it the final decision of the athletes?

Just re-watched SinKats and Step/Bukin FDs with TAT:TT1: commentary - I think she is over it and has accepted that SinKats are #Rus1 this season.

S/B were so deflated in both dances either they knew ahead of time that the tide had turned, they were simply emotionally spent after GPF or more than likely a combination of both.

Hasn't TAT always praised Nikita's skating? I don't think it came out of nowhere. I seem to remember she did way back in the I/K days even when she was at the same time publicly slamming them for being lazy and not training hard enough. We just haven't heard it that much because the past few years have been a mess and until tonight she was strongly loyal to baby Bukin.

S/B went through so much last year and then all their success in the fall must have felt sort of like a bit of fate making it up to them so I can imagine the GPF was even more deflating than it might have been under other circumstances. Stepanova's instagram post after the Final thanking Bukin and also fans for supporting them even when things aren't great was really sweet.

What did she said?
She was gushing over Nikita  : he has always been an outstanding skater, but used to have mental problems in the past, they mahaged to fix this problem with Zhulin.
- Also said that Zhulib laid down his life for Nikita, he had to be so patient..
- "They executed this program beautifully, it was a birth.. a birth of a star.. "
- "we have to teams who can fight [for medals?], but today THEY skated like they can actually win and fight! Let them fight for the gold, for the silver [on international level]"
- "there was so much love, so much sadness, so much tragedy in that dance..."
- "Nikita is a skating genius, he has always been, he was born like this, he can do so much, but he couldn't put things together "
- "Vika has learnt so much, I would have never guessed that she will be able to do it. She now has very clean and soft legs, she can be so different now"
- "Zhulin put up with him for so long.. Zhulin and Vodorezova (Buyanova) they both were so patient"

She was in a great mood after Kovtun's LP :D

TAT was also angry that Jon , whose mother is a technical specialist, didn't stop the skate - he should have known things like this

It's been awhile so maybe my memory of the sequence of the events isn't the greatest but I do have this recollection of this feeling of doom when I heard that I/K were going to Morozov. I will always wonder what would have happened if they'd stayed with Zhulin.

Best to look forwards. Far better than what we saw today is just on the horizon.

Unless S&K were going to make "evident" mistakes, I was 100% sure they were going to win this since yesterday. If I knew it, imagine S&B.

Exactly, it just took the wind out of their sails, it was so obvious.

They were a pale shadow of themselves.

I wonder if SinKats, thru that last frustrating quad, ever looked at the Shibs and thought that there often is a way back to the top in ice dance. The two teams couldn’t be more different but the redemption story is similar.

No, very different stories. Shibs plateaued very early then experienced a dip and clawed there way back up. SinKats digged themselves up from not being able to even make minimum technical requirements to finally becoming a cohesive whole, helped in large part by a very smart coach who knows how to show them off to their advantage. Let them enjoy it!!

It is pretty amazing considering at this point last season they were perceived to be sinking fast and were very close to possibly being surpassed by Z/G (only prevented from being official by their withdrawal from nats.) in the hierarchy. A season later they're national champions and stand a good chance at standing on a world podium! Pretty amazing how fast things can change :respec:
