The Dance Hall 5: Ice Dance Fans 2017-2018

That program was the absolute best they had. It had everything, I don't know how many times I've watched it.

They'll have to change the program : upgrade levels in step sequences, one less lift (even changing them since the requirements aren't the same aymore), add the choreographic elements, better transitions since they've obviously upgrade their game too. But it has to feel new, and saying all of that makes me wonder how different it will look compared to 2012... a lot of things have changed in Ice Dance since that year.

I guess it will have the Morozovian touch.

I like their new costumes for the SD

Apparently it's on their ISU bio. I am beyond disappointed. I guess when it's your last season as competitor you want to have program you love...
It's just so lazy to do that. Going back 6 years ago to a program that you know the crowd love. Looks like they don't want to create something new but rest on... not even existing success ?
I'm confused. And yet this is very risky because you know that people will compare how you skated to it in 2012 and might say "I preferred it that way". Even riskier because we are now in late october, and the Olympics are in february.. Why why why ?

I think it's way less lazy to bring something back from several years than to use something the year before. Enough time has passed that it's not going to be the same. And besides, it was six years ago, so they have to put in the work to rediscover the character and everything. And it's not like they just decided to repeat from the beginning - they did try to create something new. I wanted to see Spartacus grow, but if they really feel like it's not working and they can't connect with them, then keeping it isn't going to help them succeed at all. And if it's their last season, then I'm sure they want to actually like the programs they put out there. So if this really wasn't working, it made sense to choose music they'd used before, since it is late in the game, as you said. They could have just gone back to last year's program if they were being lazy.

I did not see any change in the FD of Alla and Pavel, though they skipped a lot of the program

Well, I have no problem with W/P going with "Je Suis Malade". Olympic programs have to connect to audiences and while I believed that "Spartacus" had all the makings of being great, 104 score wasn't going to cut it. Even if it went up (which it would have), that's not in the ballpark still. They are much better skaters especially as a team and their connection is fantastic. I expect to see a new version of Malade to reflect rule changes, etc, but I have no doubt this will be amazing for them. And the new SD costumes? Great, the flowers on Kaitlyn are perfect, she is always stunning.

Going back to your program is always lazy artistically. They could've been lazier, yes. But somehow I don't think any of their Free Dance this quad was good enough for an Olympic program.. Maybe in 2016 ? That was my fave of them.
I'll say this again, I think I'll like it. I had just more ambitions for them. Maybe they'll prove me wrong and blow my mind this week end.

I know what you mean, but I don't think it's a question of laziness with WeaPo, more a "safer" choice. And yet we have to see if it's really safer because the FD is from 6 years ago. Could be seen as a risk, I think what they want is IMPACT, you don't have time for people to warm up to you on an Olympic season.

I agree with the 2016 FD. In fact the 2015-2016 season was pretty epic in terms of FDs, this was for me the best Worlds Championships in Ice Dance I've ever seen.

I don't think they want to do the 2016 FD because it's sort of a cerebral downer. I actually liked that FD quite a bit, but I don't know if it screams "Olympic". I know "Je Suis Malade" isn't a happy song, but it's epic and emotional.

Deleted- I realized some would read it as an attack and didn't want to reignite flame wars.

Yes! Those last two flights were epic and the programs were mostly pretty clean. What a contrast compared to this year's fiasco. I actually liked that the teams were maxing out in their base score. It put it more in the hand of judges for GOE and PCS to compare the teams vs. tilted to the caller.

I actually think 2016 Worlds may be my favorite ice dance competition when I take into account the entire field and their performances.
Mine too. Build a Home + Fix you the same year was too much for my poor heart too handle. And then everyone clean performances. And I'd say the FDs just matched the skaters that year, they were some awesome picks (Ch/Ba, Commes/Buckland, Guignard/Fabbri, C/L, H/D,... I could go on and on).

I would rather have seen Maria de Buenos Aires again. But then, they used that for 2013-2014, i.e., last Olympics anyhow, right?

Ugh that program ♡♡♡

I'm willing to give W/P the benefit of the doubt. Yes, it's an old program, but it's so old they have to make it "new" again, so to speak. I just need to prepare myself for Lara Fabian (who has been ruined for me by fs lol).

Ooo Carol Lane "It's Russia" she' becoming so delusional. Almost to the point of Joanne MCloud :)

Sorry for 2019 can we just bring back C/P? No disrespect to Piper. I haven't seen major improvements in Paul's skating, still feel like he's holding back.

Re W/P going back to an old program. One part of my loves it, another part feels they should just go to Carmalingo for programs (i'm sure he would have given them a better program than Spartacus)...

Now that we've had three high-quality camerawork international competitions (Nebelhorn, Finlandia, Rostelecom Cup), which programs have you all been watching the most? For me, it's a blend of really liking the music and what the choreography evokes that makes me want to watch a program repeatedly. They're not necessarily the 'best' programs-- there are other great programs that I like but just don't feel like watching again and again. These are the ones I view a few times a week:

Nebelhorn
Muramoto/Reed FD
Lorenz/Polizoakis FD

Finlandia

Papadakis/Cizeron SD
Papadakis/Cizeron FD
Fournier-Beaudry/Sorenson SD
Fournier-Beaudry/Sorenson FD (I still think this is the most enjoyable SD/FD set of the season)
Wang/Liu FD (It's so cheesy in the second half- I love it!)

Rostelecom

Shibutani/Shibutani SD
Guignard/Fabbri FD
Stepanova/Bukin FD
Parsons/Parsons FD

From juniors: Carreira/Ponomarenko FD
From the Autumn Classic: the opening and end sequence to Smart/Diaz's SD. I'm such a sucker for his hips.

I saw it in practice today. It's just a fabulous choice, IMO. I know, I know . . . all the reused programs. But this is so them! It stands out from every other team in the larger field. Builds and builds. It's so dramatic. And they have really improved so much as a team since 2012. I don't know what the full program will look like yet. They left a lot out of it during the practice run through, and I didn't see any of the new elements they have developed recently. I hope some of them will be in it to update the impact and power of the program. But the music is so right for them.

Was Je Suis Malade snubbed by the judges? Did people think they deserved to medal with it over Pechelat/Bourzat? I honestly don't remember.

The program was a million miles better than P&B's Mummy program. Whether W&P were developed enough as skaters at that point of time to take advantage of it in France may be arguable. But they are developed enough as skaters now. They were faster than Virtue & Moir today. Their programs are not as full, but wonderful speed and flow. (Unfortunately the twizzles were not-so-hot. Come on, guys. Just go out there and skate your way).

Also, Madison Hubbell is selling the ______ out of this new FD. I still think the opening piece of music goes on too long, but I liked the ending much better this time around. And again, this style really fits this team. Also had terrific speed today. It's just great to see the diversity among the dance field this season. So many of the top teams doing their thing instead of trying to chase teams with someone else's style.

If everyone skates well, it should be a great battle this weekend:).

(Though, by golly, the depth in the pairs field is ridiculous here).

I've watched Virtue/Moir's Autumn Classic SD probably 10 times. Whenever it comes up as a YouTube option, I rewatch it. Aside from that, I think I've watched H/D's SD once and the Shibs' SD once.

I know people have been complaining a lot about the SDs and the FDs this season, but I’m already enjoying them a lot more than the FDs we got generally speaking from 2014, 2010, and 2006. If I were to go far enough then I’d include 2002 as well as I don’t think the FDs that year were any good.

No complaints from me re the material. We have some pretty dramatic programs shaping up here.

2002 was worse than any of the other three Olympics you listed IMO. The three medalists had one of their worst programs and 4th place needed us to be convinced of Kraatz as Michael Jackson. I actually thought 2014 was ok, not great but not terrible.

Since I’ve been enjoying the FD’s from this season too, I’m just curious which ones you like the most so far.

I've watched the Shibs' SD about 50 times and Virtue & Moir's twice. So between us both, there's balance.

Meanwhile in 2002, Drobiazko and Vanagas in 5th were robbed yet again in lieu of those craptastic programs ahead of them. Although, I will admit that I loved Anissina and Peizarat's OD very much.

No. Drobiazko was the scratchy female equivalent of Margaglio, and Vanagas was not Skary Babs brilliant. :p

In other controversial opinions, Vanessa Crone wasn’t all that as a skater.
